I got the ps3 because of the games. Yes it was for movies too,but I'll admit, I didn't care about blu rays until I actually watched one on my PS3.
DO you game? If so, I would think the PS3 would be your choice.
I don't have any experience with other blu-ray players, but there are a lot of people on this forum that say the PS3 is one of the best,if not the best blu-ray player out there right now.

I would say it depends on 2 things

1. Do you have a receiver that can decode Dolby True HD and DTS Master audio if sent in bitstream form (that's the only way the 350 can send the signal). The 350 is going to be upgraded to BD Live (2.0), so you won't miss out there. If you don't have a receiver that decodes those sound formats, definately get the PS3, which decodes them internally and sends them out as PCM over HDMI (provided your receiver has HDMI-If not you can only get 2 channel lossless sound through the optical out on the PS3, you will not get lossless over optical on the 350 as there are no internal decoders for those sound formats), unless you plan a receiver upgrade soon. I may be wrong here, I am not sure if the 350 decodes Dolby True internally but I believe it does not internally decode DTS Master Audio, and all titles from Universal and Fox use that format.

2. Do you play video games? If you do and your receiver cannot decode the new sound formats I mentioned in #1, the PS3 (which does decode them, over HDMI) is the way I would go.

There are a few other considerations, the Playstation Network now has started to make available movie downloads and I foresee the selection increasing greatly. Of course there are other sources. Finally, the PS3 is constantly upgraded with firmware updates, more-so than Sony's players are. but seeing that the 350 will be a 2.0 player it really won't need any more upgrades for playing discs.

Get a PS3. I own both and the PS3 is unbeatable for speed, upgrade ability, and functions. If it could bitstream lossless audio then it would be the greatest device ever!

I've come to learn that what hurts the PS3 is not being able to bitstream but receivers post processing the LPCM signal sent from the PS3.

I have the Pioneer Elite 92 and until recently have had it in PCM-EX and many other modes. In my case it needs to be in "direct" sound mode, the sound wasn't that good because the Elite 92 was post processing (adding garbage) to the PS3's PCM signal.

"direct" on the pioneer adds no post processing and in that mode the actual signal from the PS3 in LPCM improved significantly, night and day.

Moral of the story, do not let your receivers add post processing to your PS3's LPCM signal. Because even if it say PCM or Multi-Channel on your receiver, most tend to still add post processing to the signal. Find out according to your receiver how to access the setting where it does not allow it to add to the signal. In my case "direct" in my pioneer is the setting.

Bottom line dude, if he plays games, the PS3 is the way to go. Plus it loads faster, and is already 2.0 compliant. Any HDMI receiver that can decode lossless can also accept decoded lossless. Therefore the PS3 is the better choice there since it is compatible with more HDMI receivers than the s350 is.

Very true. I was just telling him about some of the features or lack-thereof (of the 350), in case he didn't know. Some people prefer to have a stand alone (as I have seen posted by some people on many boards), so in case he was one of them, I wanted him to be sure his receiver could decode the lossless audio because the 350 cannot. There are also other people who prefer their receiver (if capable) to decode the lossless (not sure why). I have a PS3 myself and always recommend it.

From the specs listed for the HTS3544, it looks like there is no HDMI input, is that accurate?....You will not be able to get 5.1 lossless without an HDMI input because co-ax bandwidth can only send 2 channels of lossless, so you would get 2 channel stereo lossless sound (Dolby True and DTS Master Audio which the PS3 converts to PCM). You would however be able to get regular Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1.

no there is not HDMI Input but there is an output....
so with the 350 i will only be able to get 2 channel but with the PS3 i would be able to get Dolby Digital 5.1?

No..... You will not be able to get lossless sound in 5.1 with any blu-ray player over coax, only HDMI. Coax does not have enough bandwidth to carry a lossless 5.1 audio signal like HDMI does. But any player (PS3 or 350) will send 5.1 regular Dolby Digital and DTS over coax. This will (from either player) give you the best sound your system is capable of, there wouldn't be any difference.

I would go with the PS3, it is updated often with new and improved features, and you can play games as well and use the Playstation network (which you can download movies and trailers and game demos and more). There are some great PS3 games out there too and the graphics beat the WII by miles! I have had my PS3 for almost a year now and love it. It is also capable of decoding more sound formats internally, so if you upgrade your stereo to one that has HDMI inputs, you will have a wider selection of stereos to choose from. The 350 limits you to which stereo you can buy to get lossless sound.

HDMI transmits Video and Audio with only 1 cable. (The cable is called a HDMI cable)

Lossless sound is HD Audio such as TrueHD, Master Audio, and PCM.

The 350 can decode "lossless" Dolby TrueHD..not too much there but it still decodes it nonetheless, better than nothing.

Well to get lossless from a PS3 you will need an HDMI input to your receiver as Optical Cable will not carry it.

So basically you need to upgrade your receiver than.

I recommend Onkyo TX-SR605 as it has 3 HDMI inputs on it.

Well I don't know that much about other Blu-Ray players than the PS3, but if the Blu-Ray player has Analog Output, then you can get HD audio if your receiver decodes HD Audio. Though someone else will need to recommend one than me unfortunately.

EDIT: After looking at your sound system specs, looks like that isn't the case.

Sound System:
DTS
Dolby Digital
Dolby Prologic II
Stereo

So you will need to purchase a Blu-Ray player that internally decodes HD audio.

I recommend getting the HDMI to HDMI. Though without a receiver without HDMI input thats useless.

So go with the component.
