Pay to get in, pray to get out...!

-The Funhouse (1981):

-Hell Fest (2018):

CarnEVILs are the setting for today's pair of hellzapoppin' shriek shows. The Funhouse regales us with the story of a quartet of horny teens (Elizabeth Berridge, Cooper Huckabee, Largo Woodruff and Miles Chapin) who, while visiting the travelling carnival visiting their small Florida town, decide on a whim to hide out in the funhouse overnight. When they witness a hulking carny disguised behind a Frankenstein monster mask murder the fortune teller (after a botched attempt at getting his rocks off), they find themselves stalked through the cavernous confines of the funhouse by the now-unmasked carny revealed to be a hideously deformed albino freak (Rick Baker designed the memorable monster makeup) as well as his loving carny barker father (Kevin Conway), who has been covering up for his offspring's string of murders stretching across the country for years.

One of director Tobe Hooper's better films, The Funhouse takes a while to really get down to "the good parts" (and, even when it does, it lacks the baroque, bloodbath gore of a lot of its early-80s slasher-movie brethren), yet it's never boring, thanks to Hooper's elegant direction and buoyed by the able support of Andrew Laszlo's excellent, anamorphic widescreen cinematography (greatly enhanced by Scream Factory's top-notch 4K release, with gorgeously saturated colors and rich, inky blacks) and John Beal's fiendishly fun score, full of twisted calliope melodies and shrill horror effects that juice up the tension beautifully. And while the characterizations are never more than serviceable, the four leads are a likable enough bunch, especially compared to the hateful ciphers that populated the average Friday The 13th or Halloween sequel.

2018's Hell Fest offers up a variation on a festival of fun that turns into a nightmare, as six friends (Amy Forsyth, Reign Edwards, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Christian James, Matt Mercurio & Roby Attal) attend Hell Fest, a wildly popular horror-themed attraction that springs up every Halloween season, as guests are presented with a bevy of seasonal spooks, as employees dresses as all manner of monsters & maniacs roams the elaborately-decorated streets and each attraction offers up an cornucopia of revolting delights. But one "employee" is the Real Deal, a serial killer (referred to as "The Other", played by Stephen Conroy), who sports a mask that suggests a distressed roman stature as designed by Salvador Dali and who stalks the group throughout the festivities, offing them one by one as they try to figure out whether he's just an overzealous employee, or something more sinister...and deadly.

Directed by veteran editor Gregory Plotkin (and sporting a screenplay that, despite the basic, meat & potatoes slasher premise and the thrifty, 89-minute running time, somehow required the services of six writers!) Hell Fest has an irresistible premise, and the saturated, day-glo colors of the setting offer up a bath for the eyes. And while the no-name cast is nondescript (the Candyman himself, Tony Todd, puts in a welcome, robust cameo as the Fest's M.C.), the movie is very efficient in delivering the requisite roller-coaster jolts and some memorably juicy kills.

-Lucky Bastard ^ (2013):

A low-rent porn website sets up a contest to give a "lucky bastard" the chance to fornicate with an authentic porn star, with "Dave G." (Jay Paulson, who resembles a young Paul Bettany) as the winner flown out to Van Nuys to be filmed in sexual congress with Ashley Saint (Betsy Rue). But when he finds himself unable to hold his wad long enough to make for an adequate shoot (pun definitely intended), his humiliation boils over into thwarted rage as he determines to get access to and destroy the footage, going to violent extremes to procure it.

An exercise in found footage thriller/horror, Lucky Bastard is directed by Robert Nathan, who co-wrote it with executive producer Lukas Kendall (the head honcho of Film Score Monthly magazine!), and while it's reasonably well-acted, it's extremely low-budget look and feel -- as well as being generally skeevy and unpleasant -- makes for a movie that takes too long to get to the horror aspects and is not compelling enough to make the slow-burn that leads up the violent climax especially edifying.

08. Another Day to Live Through (2023) (1st viewing) Slow, quiet, low budget, and half in Finnish. A young woman goes camping alone (always a good idea) and wakes up in a cabin with no memory of how she got there. An older man whose favorite movie is The Last Man on Earth brings her a canned ration breakfast & some "pain killers." What day is this? -Do you like droning cellos & face blindness? This is the movie for you.

09. Mask Maker (2010) (1st viewing) 3 young couples at a dilapidated old house in the country. I wonder what happens. Treat Williams is in this for a minute or 2. Michael Berryman has 2 or 3 scenes. I did enjoy one of the kills, but feel like I'm being generous with the 2

what I love about the original PHANTASM is that it makes no logical sense from start to finish.... it plays like a nightmare... and that's what makes it special...

10/9 - The Entity -
This didnt age as well as I wouldve hoped but Barbara Hershey is still nice to look at.

[Show spoiler]9/1 - Deliverance - Great performance from Andra Day and refreshing take on Exorcisms.

9/2 - Longlegs - Just terrible and very slow. Nic please stop.

9/11 - The Witch - Good film! Loved the lead actress!

9/12 - Terrifier - Low budget but up my alley.

9/14 - Immaculate - Loved the lead actress and very good film.

9/15 - The Descent Part 2 - Not as good as the first, but love that it was a direct sequel.

9/16 - You'll Never Find Me - Mixed here, but it was ok I guess.

9/18 - Blink Twice - Very good movie and great directorial debut from Zoe.

9/19 - The Rental - Not a bad slasher film.

9/21 - Terrifier 2 -
Good follow up to the OG. Savage kills and the lead actress was fire! Cant wait to see part 3.

9/24/24 - All Hallows Eve -
Its an ok Anthology film, where the character Art the Clown was created. Not as good as the Terrifier films though.

9-26 - All Hallows Eve 2 -
Ok film but nuthin special. Very short films in this Anthology Horror.

9/27 - Bloodline -
Stiffler the serial killer. Kinda bland but not the worst film Ive seen.

9/28 - Firestarter -
Love the original but this remake was very underwhelming. The female lead was pretty good but the script wasnt it.

9/29 - Thanksgiving -
Finally a slasher about Thanksgiving. Very entertaining but predictable. Wouldnt mind seeing a sequel...

9/29 - Talk To Me -
Original concept and its something about foreign horror films. Very good watch....

9/30 - Nightmares (1983) -
It was good seeing this classic after so many years. The Video Game & Rat stories are my favs in this.

10/1 - Speak No Evil (2022) -
Im not a big subtitle fan but foreign Horror hits different. Disturbing ending but good movie.

10/2 - The Hangman -
A waste of a hour & half. Just not a good film. Please stay away from this.

10/2 - The Cellar -
Not a good night of films. Elisha Cuthbert couldnt save this film.

10/3 - Break -
This has nuthin on Frozen. Didnt realize it was a foreign film with a terrible English dub version. You can skip this one.

10/4 - Friday the 13th (1980) -
My fav Horror franchise. Not the best film in the series but its what kicked things off.

10/5 - Friday the 13th Part 2 -
Jason is born! My fav Horror film. Potato Sack Jason. Ginny is the best Final girl in any Horror movie.

10/6 - He's Out There -
Decent slasher film with solid acting by the lead actress and her kids.

10/7 - All Hallow's Eve: Trickster -
3rd film in the series, weird but had decent atmosphere. Nuthin special and one wild story toward the end.

10/8 - Speak No Evil (2024) -
Solid remake and cool switch up on the klymaxx. Original film slightly better but both good films.

Part 2 is best to me. I actually have the original somewhere in the middle. But Im a huge Jason fan so that plays a part.

13. A Nightmare On Elm Street 2

I love this sequel as much as the original. Fantastic dream world sequences especially the opening school bus ride which I'm sure made its' way into several nightmares I had as a kid!

There's always been some controversy surrounding who directed what in this film. I'll be honest, I don't really care if Tobe Hooper or Steven Spielberg directed the majority of "Poltergeist," I'm just glad it exists. This was the second true horror movie I saw after "The Exorcist." I use the words "true horror movie" because the first one I watched was "Alien" but I've always regarded that as more science fiction chiller than straight horror. I was five years old at the time and one of the things that stuck with me the longest was the music played over the end credits. I got the notion into my head that the voices belonged to dead children who were singing a lullaby so they could steal the souls of the audience members while they slept. Quite the imagination I had at the time, huh? As far as the score is concerned, I can't honestly say if this is Jerry Goldsmith's finest hour, but if it's not - it sure comes close. From a technical standpoint this is a brilliant, creative work of art with only one noticeable problem: there's a very strange edit after the kitchen chair experiment where the film abruptly jumps to the Freelings discussing weird occurrences with their next door neighbors. For some reason, that always struck me as an incredibly amateurish mistake in an otherwise excellent production.

I absolutely love the patriotic opening to "Poltergeist." I never would have thought "The Star-Spangled Banner" would be used as a milestone moment in a horror movie and yet here it fits the tone so completely it feels like it was written specifically for the film. Dealing with the absurdities of everyday life from crossed remote control signals to dying canaries also helps place the viewer in a specific mood. Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams work well together and were the first cinematic couple that honestly felt like the leaders of a real American family to me. I could imagine the Freelings living somewhere in my own neighborhood, which increased the fright factor I felt when the family was put in peril. Heather O'Rourke was a cute kid and a natural talent in front of the camera. I don't think this film would have been half as effective had it not been she who was placed in harm's way by the entities roaming the house. Zelda Rubinstein leaves her own lasting impression with her innocent voice and uncanny power to peer into what lies beyond. Overall, "Poltergeist" was destined to become a genre classic and was also a magnificent terror to watch at such a young age. I genuinely believe this film made me the horror buff I am today.

I have not seen this film in around seventeen years, so I figured it was time to give it another chance. I'm not sure I'd call it a mistake, exactly, but I do think I should have watched it on a day when I had two lesser films accompanying it instead of two classics like "Poltergeist" and "The Fly." Michael Keaton can play any character from overworked family man to psychotic bio-exorcist and make it look easy. "White Noise" offers him a chance to utilize his vast array of facial expressions as a fairly silent man being immersed into a fairly silent world trying to hear responses from the ether after his wife passes away. Unfortunately the film quickly reveals itself as a one man (and one note) show, and while Keaton tries to keep things as involving as he possibly can, the weight of nothingness eventually drags him down. There aren't enough big events for Keaton to play off of and around the hour mark of the film it feels like we'd get the same effect watching him bat a tennis ball against a plain, gray wall as we do watching this movie. By the time the highly unsatisfying conclusion rolled around, I was struggling not to tune out. Being a massive fan of Keaton I did my best to like this piece, but there's just nothing here that warrants anything more than two skulls (at best).

During the 1950s, science fiction was the preferred method for delivering thrills and chills to theater-going audiences across the country. Giant ants roamed across deserts and giant spiders crawled through spooky caverns. Alien life forms came down from the sky and nature's oddities rose from the watery depths. Behind a lot of the nerve-shattering sci-fi terrors of the decade were scientists, some of whom possessed good natures while some cared less for morality. One of the best of the best was this Kurt Neumann-directed powerhouse. Neumann was no stranger to the horrific tastes of his day, having already directed the vastly underrated "Kronos" and "She-Devil" the previous year. For "The Fly," Neumann took every ounce of his talent and experience to mesmerize his audience with a tale of scientific discovery gone wrong.

Growing up, I was a massive fan of Vincent Price. I always gravitated more toward his outlandishly villainous roles, such as those found in "The Comedy of Terrors" and "The Masque of the Red Death." However, his kindly, sympathetic portrayal of the scientist's brother has grown on me over the years. His delivery, per usual, is splendid and refined and while he doesn't mean to become the center of attention he frequently does so through sheer magnetism. Patricia Owens is a strong enough leading lady to withstand the onslaught of horrors that surround her and David Hedison is solid as scientist Andre Delambre. Almost thirty years later, David Cronenberg would create a body horror masterpiece that would ultimately surpass this version. Nevertheless, in the 1958 original, we have an elegantly-crafted old school fear fest that certainly deserves to be remembered as an innovator of its time.

AN INSTANTLY RECOGNIZABLE CLASSIC:
