I would like to see remasters of 2-8, and although Khan is ok, it could probably use a fresh master.

Personally, I have no problem either way so long as it was approved by the filmmaker(s).
They did not strike new 70MM prints. So they are the originals.

I have production photos of Regula taken by ILM that clearly show Regula is supposed to be reddish brown.

Promotional material/photos shown in ALL the magazines at the time had regula as reddish brown.

The color is straight up wrong on the Blu-ray.
Flaws aside, overall the transfer is MORE ACCURATE. The entire DVD transfer has a red push.

Compare when Kirk interrupts the Kobyashi Maru test at the beginning of the film. The blinding wash of light behind him falls on Saavik in the Blu-ray, it is GONE on the DVD.

I'll take a few miscolored shots of a dead moon in 1080p over an entire reddish transfer at 480i.

Unfortunately that DVD looks like garbage. Too bright. You can see ugly black matte lines around the Klingon ships because the space around them is gray instead of black. While the BD has too much DNR it is still a vast improvement.

I agree about the picture quality of the DVD, it looks awful, the blu-ray looks much better even though it's flawed too. There's some dodgy ghosting on the DVD as well from time to time, but the DC is much better then the TC, which makes it all the more fustrating lol :P

They're slaving away at TNG and did a great job on TOS. You'd think they would want to properly restore the feature films as well.

CBS don't own the films unfortunatley. It would be great they could get hold of them and give them the same royal treatment as TOS and TNG, but it won't happen.

Back in 2007 the ten movie twenty disc set was frequently on sale at FYE for $8.99.

He may be talking about the DVD set, which came out in 2005 (that is what the year is on the bottom of my box set). I too picked up the 10 movie 20 disc set at F.Y.E. for $8.99.

I believe CBS has been doing all of the work for the TV stuff. Had Paramount been doing it, you would get something barely above DVD quality from all of the heavy DNR.

I just don't understand why any studio would neglect one of their flagstones. Secondary franchises and films I get, but not a key frontrunner.

that has been one of my points with the Abrams movies. until now, Trek has always been a real good cash cow for Paramount - they put a few dollars in and get great returns. Everyone talks about how bad the first movie was but it made them a ton of money. Even with the extra expenses, it still did well enough that they made another movie but this time they slashed the budget. that has always been an issue - Paramount makes money off of these but doesn't want to put anything in. Star Trek 6 was given a $30 million budget, the same budget 5 had a few years earlier, and Nick Meyers had to fight for that because they were going to cut the budget. imagine what the movies would have been like had they given them larger budgets like JJ got. not saying it would have totally saved the movie, but imagine what 5 might have been like had Paramount waited and spent the big bucks to get ILM to do the effects. even look at the whole HD-DVD thing. Paramount was behind HD-DVD yet the only Trek related thing that came out on it was the first season of TOS remastered. why no movies? at least Nemesis could have been released. Even Enterprise could have. it is insane how badly Trek gets treated but they know no matter what happens, it will make them money and they can double-dip down the road so they do it.

I really regret selling these. I foolishly assumed the BDs would be superior in every way. Now each 2-disc DVD is going for $6 - $9 in second hand shops around here. Not long ago they were 2/$5 at Walmart brand new!

They actually thought they were doing good with the DNR, probably figured it was a requirement to get it past the grain hating general public.

What's with this set? It's been jumping all over the place in price lately. I think I saw it down to $44 bucks early this morning then up to $54 & now down to like $48. Jumping if I see it hit $39.99.

All of the films that were only available in the box sets will get separate releases on April 30th. They're currently $16.99 each on Amazon.

I was hoping these movies would be remastered properly, but doesn't seem like the case, so this is probably going to be the best they will ever look in 1080p especially given it's Paramount. So, if I see the boxset hit $39.99, I too will jump on it.
