There are two ways to look at it. My grandpa (and my dad) will tell you all day long "a new car's a poor man's car." By that he means that a new car will have far fewer repairs and/or maintenance needed and will have a 3-5 year warranty, so less unexpected large expenses falling in your lap at the worst possible time. In his eyes, new car = peace of mind.

The other school of thought is to go used - like 3-5 years old. I'm in this camp. The advantage to buying a slightly older car is that you allow someone else to eat all of the depreciation that happens in the first couple of years of a car's life. You are also able to get more car for your money. For example, rather than getting a 2015 or 2016 Camry you might be able to get a 2011 or 2012 Avalon.

I bought a new car when I was sixteen and I've bought used ever since. But that's me - you should weigh all of the factors and figure out what makes the most sense to you. You'll be in a much better position if you can walk into the dealership with financing already secured rather than relying on their financing (which is another opportunity for them to screw you over.) Look into getting pre-approved for a loan from your insurance company or bank.

And don't let them negotiate "payments" if you do go with their financing. Make them be up front with how many years the loan is for, what the actual cost is for the car, and what the interest rate is. With a financial calculator you'll be able to figure out your own payments.

Good luck.
Heh thanks and I actually don't know much about you. I just want a used one that's as new as possible so I don't have to pay new car pricing but I can still have a car that will run for 10-12 years. I am definitely going to talk to a couple credit unions here before I go to dealerships when my debt is gone and I'm ready to enjoy my next car.

Nice! Hope you get a car that you'll really enjoy, and also that you'll have a very Happy Birthday! Those are some nice other choices, too.

What's on my mind currently? Well, I've been doing some introspection and I realize that I often feel that I'm a horrible person. Ultimately, I then think about all the loathsome excuses for human beings I've dealt with in my lifetime and say, "Well, even if I'm not a very good person, though I try my best to be, at least I'm nowhere on the level of those (insert choice expletives here)."

After a horrible night, I managed to get maybe an hour of sleep. During said hour of sleep, I had a dream (nightmare, maybe?) that just... I still can't shake it, even now. Why does our mind do such things to us?!

My best guess for why I rarely get enough sleep is my diabetes but since I manage that as well as I can I doubt that's what it is. Might be my bed, for some reason I got a better night's sleep on that terrible mattress I had before I moved here. It may be that my body simply doesn't like this bed.

I'm glad you manage that well. I've got family members who suffer from that and it can do a lot of damage if not treated well. I hope you stay healthy.

That's also quite possible, about the bed. Whatever it is, I hope that you manage to sleep better soon.

Same. I came out of the movie wanting to give it a read. I really do want to get back into reading again. I actually did more reading last year than I had in quite a while.

Why would a brand new poster need to start a new thread right out of the gate?

I got 8.5 hours last night, which is a lot better than the 6-7.5 hours I usually get. Definitely getting close to that time when I need to go to White Sands and First Light to ask them what rates they can offer me for a car loan. They should be able to tell me exactly how much I will need to borrow to buy a $14000ish car from the next state also.

"If it weren't so cold outside right now, I'd probably head to a coffee shop or somewhere else that's open right now just to be around other people."

I just don't feel like being alone, especially during the night when I can't sleep. Honestly, I'm still debating bundling up and heading out for a walk or something where it's well lit or at least in a store that's open or something. Hmm...

You should! I went out for a little jog earlier and I feel much better. Course, I'm making up for it by eating a huge lunch

Just wondering about all of this snow and if I will actually able to get to work tomorrow or if they will even be open.

Seriously, though, if it's nice and it's also safe where you are, it's a wonderful thing to do.

Stores will try to find any way to stay open. How bad is it there? If all else fails, call and ask how things are looking for tomorrow. If it looks like they'll be open, time to formulate a plan.

Work went alright, and then I ran some errands and had a quick walk since it was nice outside. I also got to go to the public library and finally renew my card. It was beat to hell but still scanned, which is a miracle since I've had it since childhood (and thankfully I didn't owe any late fees! Yay!). They actually had a nice Blu/DVD section. I haven't been there in forever because I'm always so busy, so it's nice to see that they're doing well.

Now I'm looking online at their site at some books to check out for my Kindle. Yeah, I read. I'm all classy and sh**.
