I think that was one of the films Mike Vraney found. Many SWV releases were based on the idea that the copyright was abandoned or the owners could not be found. He was removing titles regularly from his catalog because he received cease and desist letters. Prior to finding the huge film stash, he only had a few titles. I don't recall if the deal with Friedman or Novak happened due to the film find.

EC comics would sometimes do Bradbury stories without permission. At some point Bradbury got in touch and instead of threatening to sue, he just said 'you forgot to pay me.' That resulted in a friendship with the publisher plus Bradbury licensing some stories to them. Unfortunately the comics code nearly killed EC (along with others). Anyway, It is possible that there wasn't an official deal previously.

I think I remember on one of the old SWV DVD commentaries that Vraney talked about how he distributed Herschell Gordon Lewis’ films for years without authorization, but Vraney said it was because HGL couldn’t be located, but then years later when he did surface Vraney cut him a pretty sizable check.

Lewis didn't own the copyright to any of his films. He was filthy rich at that point from DMM. Why would any sensible person give a millionaire money not owed to them when they gain nothing in return?

Yeah, I think it was David Friedman he gave the check to, not HGL. Because he was selling some of his films (not the HGL ones). Friedman was so impressed he gave Vraney access to his vaults.

That sounds familiar and much more logical.

Lewis sold the rights to the films he owned at some point in the 70s. He didn't think they were of any value since home video didn't exist. He either traded the films for a car or sold them for money that he used to buy a car.

I'm pretty sure it was THE EROTIC ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD that first brought Vraney to the attention of David F. Friedman. "Somebody" was selling unauthorized copies of ROBIN HOOD via mail order, and that person was Vraney before he went "legit" thanks to Friedman. Friedman was a producer of ROBIN HOOD.

As a follow up to the twitter comment from AGFA regarding the reissue of out of print titles, they also stated that there's a good chance that they would be reissued with slipcovers. For those who care about such things...

How did they come to acquire this title?

It is by far my favorite AGFA release. I was really hoping we would get more 50's Ed Wood from them. Even the lesser films like Jail Bait (1954)...

Jail Bait and others are supposed to be coming from The Film Detective.

Who has the rights to his porn films? Would love to see a fancy boxset from Vinegar Syndrome containing the following XXX films as well as his XXX shorts/loops:

'Necromania': A Tale of Weird Love!
The Undergraduate - He wote this
The Only House in Town
The Young Marrieds
Panty Girls

I'd hope that the set would a;so include any njon-XXX versions of the XXX stuff lizsted above.

I assume VS still own the rights to ALL the Stephen C. Apostolof films? As I'd love to see the rest of them get BD releases. Possibly as 2-3 boxsets.

Does anyone know if this includes films he wrote as well or just the directed ones?
