Does updating the PS3 firmware erase the Resume memory? Or is there a limited amount of time and/or discs that you can play before it will be erased? I put in a couple BDs (non-BDJ) that I had played several months ago and pressed Stop in a certain location, but they both started up from the beginning.
I'm curious about that too.

Default New PS3 FAQ thread

FYI - I've created a new PS3 FAQ thread over on the AVS Forum intended to help new PS3 owners (and potential owners). HERE is the link.

Nice. Thanks.

Do you know why the PS3 remote fast forwards in only X1.5, 10, 30, 120 and there isn't any middle speed like X60, 80 or like X90?

Why such a big gap between X30 and X120?

Is there anyway to fix this?

We need details. When talking about hardware, you gotta list your hardware.

Since your Philips audio system only has an optical digital audio input for inputting surround sound, you will need to connect the PS3's HDMI output directly to your HDTV and connect the optical digital output (also called Toslink) from the PS3 to your Philips audio system. You will need to set the PS3 to output the audio via the optical output and also set the PS3 to use bitstream mode on the optical audio output. Thus you will need one HDMI cable (PS3 to LG HDTV) and one optical digital audio cable (PS3 to Philips audio system).

I'm sure that additional speeds could be added by Sony via a firmware update, but I doubt there is much demand for this and therefore its unlikely it will be changed.

There's an optical out of the PS3. Read your manual if you can't see it.

Since you are using the Philips HTS3544/37, WHICH HAS NO OPTICAL INPUT but has a COAXIAL input, the other end of the optical cable goes into this optical-to-coaxial converter.

Then you use a single RCA cable from the converter to your Philips HTIB.

Hey guys,

My first HDTV is coming in soon (Samsung LN40A650) and I had a really quick question. I'm sure the answer is in this thread somewhere, but at the moment I don't have time to look through all 40 pages. I bought my tv from Amazon, so there will be a delivery person coming by who is supposed to bring in the box, help me take out the tv, and set it up. I've read that the delivery person will make sure that the TV is working properly too, so this is my question: I will be using my PS3 as a blu-ray player, but I only have compononet cables. If I hook up the component cables to the hdtv and play one of my blu-ray movies, do you think this is a sufficient way to test whether the TV is working? I mean, besides checking for physical problems like scatches and dead pixels, is there one test that I absolutely must do before I let the delivery person be on his way?

I'm experiencing an issue with my PS3. When trying to access the bd-live functions on the new Transformers BD, I get an error message saying "not currently connected to internet or is not bd-live capable". This is my first BD with the option so I don't know if it's specific to Transformers or not. My PS3 is firmware version 2.42. I know I'm connected to the net because I just did the firmware upgrade from 2.30.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Check your settings and make sure you have internet enabled for blu-ray play back.

Yup. That's one of the first things I double checked. It's enabled.

The only thing keeping me from buying a PS3 is the fan issue. The unit would be sitting alone on top of a shelf with open air on all sides but I'm not sure that would be enough to keep it quiet.

The only other choices that fit my price range are the Panasonic BD30K or the Sony S350, but both of their dedicated threads seem chocked full of various minor issues and headaches that quit honestly, push me towards the stability of the PS3.

It's an extremely tough call.
