Who cares? We've all only seen a teaser trailer and by all accounts it looks solid. Maybe let's let it release and see it before we start casting aspersions as to how it came to be. If it releases and everybody loves it but it was produced by a collaboration of folks, does that mean anything?

Some directors may not have an auteur sense in their final product at all. At least, ones that are so overt. James Gunn is James Gunn. Marvel hired him to make a James Gunn Marvel film. Whedon was the same thing. Raimi w/ his Doctor Strange. And some others too. While some of the Marvel films don't have that overt artist tell, and that's fine. Johnston did The Rocketeer... so that makes sense for Cap 1. He's been in that wheelhouse but also not much one for a style to takes his work. He does have a grand history in production design so he LOVES that stuff and if you know his films you can see that The Russos have no real sense of auteur in their voice. And that's okay. They've struggled w/ their films out of Marvel. So maybe they're a weird thing that they can excel in this machine too. They've completed 4 Marvel films. All in varying qualities and issues in them. Some much more than others. Cap 2 for me is the best MCU film and The Russos' best film they've done yet. Beyond making a good film, I do wish Marvel would have a more sense of artistry as a product. At a certain point, so many of them have the same visual color tone/pallete that they play in. It's like they got the colors from the same package all the time. Made worse when they get directors that have less of a sense of authorship, can't fight a machine if you're just a nobody. And it's something they have held onto mostly for a while now. That look, if you will. Marvel will free up the control of what one can do w/ framing, camera movements, etc. But that look... rarely really pushes forward. Unlike the text of where they were built on. So many variations of colors and styles while undoubtedly being Marvel. Sony also has this problem w/ damn near all their live action stuff. Maybe worse even. Sony will Sony cuz they're Sony. |
