![]() [Show spoiler] First-time viewings are indicated with an ^ [Show spoiler] 10/10/24: -And Soon The Darkness ^ (1970): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A pair of British birds, Jane & Cathy (Pamela Franklin, Michele Dotrice) are on a holiday in France, leisurely biking through the picturesque countryside, when they have a bit of a row and Jane peddles on ahead, leaving Cathy stunning herself at the edge of the road. When Cathy fails to show up at the roadside cafe Jane stops at an hour later, she grows more and more worried, eventually biking back to the glen near the woods where they stopped, only to find both Cathy and her bicycle missing. Is she simply playing a haughty prank, or has she fallen prey to a killer who murdered another young, blonde lovely in the area a few years back, and who was never apprehended? Directed by Robert Fuest (who went on to make the enjoyable pair of Dr. Phibes movies with Vincent Price), And Soon The Darkness, despite its misnomer of a title (it takes place 100% during the day!) and lurid poster art is not much of a blatant horror movie, taking a more psychological, Hitchcockian route (it also anticipates later films like The Vanishing and Breakdown), and is made with a steady hand as slow-burn suspense and boasts a fine performances by Franklin as her initial displeasure with her friend gradually accelerates into genuine concern and unease as she's beset with a bevy of unsavory scenarios and potential suspects. -The Manitou (1978): ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An especially insane exercise in horror nonsense, The Manitou features a badly-miscast Tony Curtis as Harry Erskine, a crackpot San Francisco psychic who does tarot readings for gullible old biddies who learns that old friend Karen Tandy (Susan Strasberg) is suffering from an unusual medical malady; a strange growth of her neck that, under X-ray study, seems to have all of the characteristics of...a human fetus. The growth keeps growing larger and larger, as Karen starts spouting seeming gibberish about "Pana witchy salatou" that leads Harry to a Native American medicine man, John Singing Rock (Michael "That's Mister Freeze, to you" Ansara), who reveals that the growth is a 400-year-old medicine man who is utilizing Karen's body an incubator so he can be reborn again into the 20th century! The Manitou, directed by schlock horror specialist William Girdler (Grizzly, Day Of The Animals), is, by no stretch of the imagination, "good", yet it's so batshit bizarre it exerts a certain I-can't-believe-what-I'm-seeing fascination. Where else can you see a midget birthed out of a pulsing sac on Strasberg's back, one of Curtis' old biddie clients levitating down the hallway of his apartment building before taking a spectacular header down a flight of stairs, and a zowie of a climax with a nude Strassberg shooting laser beams from her hands at the reborn "Misquamacus" in the void of space (contained within her hospital room, mind you) with a cut-rate 2001 Stargate lightshow going off in the background? Set to a seriously good Lalo Schifrin score (one overdue for a soundtrack release), The Manitou deserves space on the shelf next to other goofy late-70s horror howlers like The Sentinel and The Legacy. |

10/10
Candy Land ![]() 6/10 Humor, nudity, blood, this movie had it all. That girl was nuts. Enjoyable watch. Longlegs ![]() 8/10 This was done really well. Very creepy. Nicolas Cage was great. I'm glad to see him expand into stuff like this. It was a total transformation. The Cursed ![]() 5/10 This movie was okay. A bit boring until the second half. The creatures were a unique werewolf like hybrid but I thought they looked poorly made. Nice to see a new folklore horror movie though. Speak No Evil(2024) ![]() 7/10 Enjoyed this but think I would have liked it if the ending was like the original film. Was still a good watch though. McAvoy is great. Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey II ![]() 4/10 Some entertaining kills, especially at the beginning but I thought this was worse then thr first one. Also I think they could have made Owl and Tigger look a little more like the animals they are supposed to be. Owl looked like Ivan Ooze with wings. Skinamarink ![]() 1/10 This was a hard watch. You either like or hated this movie. I hated it. I get it was artsy, but it's basically just watching a camera set at bad angles and aimed at walls and floors for the whole film. Garbage. October 9th - Back To The Late 1990s:
Film #17. I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) ![]() To be honest, I can't definitively claim to have a strong personal appreciation for the films and music of the late 1990s and/or early 2000s. (At least when compared to the previous, and arguably more "fruitful", time periods.) However, many years have passed since then and enough aspects of "daily life" have either completely changed or disappeared entirely, "sad to say". ![]() ![]() Points Of Interest include: A screenplay written by the same dude who wrote Scream (1996), an opening credits sequence set to a cover song by Type O Negative ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A well made film but a little "too safe" and "mainstream" for my personal taste. Feels like a slasher film created more for the Freeform or CW channel crowd. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Film #18. Bride Of Chucky (1998) ![]() Some die-hard Child's Play purists might feel a bit disappointed or even betrayed by the overall tonal shift the franchise begins to take with this entry. I on the other hand personally found this film to be an absolute blast and it has quickly climbed towards the top of my annual October re-watch list! Bride Of Chucky (1998) offers viewers plenty of bloody practical effects, truly impressive animatronic puppetry, and even striking spooky visuals throughout the entire run time. There's also a clever razor-sharp comedic edge to everything as well! Jennifer Tilly gives a phenomenal performance as Tiffany and has great chemistry playing off of Brad Dourif's maliciously snarky Chucky. This film also possesses a very peculiar late-90s/early-2000s aesthetic which is rather difficult to easily define. I can only describe this particular quality as somewhere in the vein of "Marilyn Manson", "Nu Metal", and/or "(old-school black & red) Hot Topic" chic. Surprisingly, I believe that the combination of all these different elements actually helped to revitalize this series as a whole. Points Of Interest include: Ritualistic spirit summoning, a very tit-ilating Tilly ![]() ![]() ![]() Röckzilla's Final Verdict: A (near) perfect blend of both horror and comedy, all set to one hell of a headbanging soundtrack! What more could you possibly even want from a single film, especially one to watch during Halloween?! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I have said it before and I'll say it again... For better or for worse, no heavy Halloween party playlist is truly complete without including this song, period! ![]() [Show spoiler]

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This really isn't that bad of an Exorcist movie. There's a solid cast involved, the demonic elements are handled well, and there's an interesting angle with using various religions to help with the exorcism. What hinders the film imo is the rather contrived addition of Chris MacNiell. I felt that her being in the film was a cheap bit of fan service that didn't amount to much more than a glorified cameo, and a "surprise" ending. Having the first film referenced and Chris seen on archived YouTube clips would have more than sufficed. Also, while the first half built the narrative steadily, the second half just felt more piled on quickly to get to the big exorcism. Overall, it does an adequate job of trying to make a respectful follow up to the original film(it doesn't retcon the other films as if they didn't exist). It's simply just a matter of the 1973 film being too tall an order to measure up and carry on from. It certainly doesn't merit the harsh vitriol. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() As outstanding a film as the original was, it's no surprise they decided to make a sequel to cash in on the "Poltergeist" popularity. The Freelings are back and the evil entities that invaded their living space in the first film have followed them to grandma's house. The natural charm of the family unit has carried over from the first film which doesn't always happen with sequels as actors have a tendency to grow apart from their roles. I will say that Craig T. Nelson's skepticism appears a little forced at times, like it wasn't given enough room to fully develop. "The Other Side" is one of those movies I wish had been given a bit longer run time. Even ten or fifteen minutes could have added a bit more warmth to the underdeveloped relationship with the grandmother (expertly portrayed by Geraldine Fitzgerald) and some much needed progression toward Nelson's possession - both of which are key moments that feel rushed. Julian Beck cuts an alarming figure as Reverend Henry Kane and his desiccated voice haunted me for years. Heather O'Rourke's strength plays beautifully off of Beck's with each embodying their own unique versions of light and darkness. The inclusion of the supernatural gifts the Freeling women are blessed with is a bit of stretch, but writers Mark Victor and Michael Grais make it work. Will Sampson is a hoot as the amiable Taylor who adds a new wrinkle in the battle against evil. When it comes to the end of the film, [Show spoiler] There's an obvious drop off in quality from the first film - how could there not be? - but "Poltergeist II: The Other Side" still has the power to entertain.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I had only planned on watching the first two "Poltergeist" films this year. However, after finishing "The Other Side" I decided to pop the third film into my player as I had the time and - strangely enough - the desire to add it to my viewing list. Right off the bat I'll say that Heather O'Rourke was not looking good in this film. There were moments when she clearly looked pudgier, and not in a natural way, and her eyes looked about fifty years older than they should. Moving to the film proper, I liked the fact that they switched the setting from the dusky California and Arizona suburbs to the urban high-rise of Chicago. The cold interiors of the building gave the filmmakers an opportunity to play around a bit with the powers of evil. Neither Tom Skerritt nor Nancy Allen were at the top of their game in this movie but a young Lara Flynn Boyle impressed me in her first role for the silver screen. Nathan Davis is a very poor substitute for Julian Beck though. I always want to like "Poltergeist III" more than I actually do. Sadly, it's a completely average finale to an otherwise excellent trilogy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I saw this film once when it came out and I haven't returned since. Hey look, it's Larry Fessenden. . . . Hey look, it was Larry Fessenden. Honestly, that has to be about the shortest freaking appearance I've yet seen from him. So the premise for this film is that a group of killers wearing animal masks target a family reunion and slaughter them one by one. All of the cast members are good enough in their roles, but I never got a full sense of immersion - I was always aware that I was watching people act and never felt like they really became their characters. It's more of an action thriller than a horror film, which might explain the sensation I get which I can only describe as "middle of the road." Seriously, for a horror film it's not quite gory enough, not quite sexy enough, not quite inventive enough, and not quite adventurous enough to differentiate itself from the crowd. It's merely a capable thriller with a few swell ideas and competent execution. I like this film, but that's the highest word of praise I can offer: like. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This is another first time watch for me and I will say right from the start that "The Cursed" is the complete opposite of "You're Next" in the fact that I was engrossed in the storyline and forgot I was watching actors play their parts. There's also a specific visual style to this film I really appreciate and it surprised me when I learned that writer/director Sean Ellis also did the cinematography. There's more tension than outright terror, the slow pace is sometimes a little too slow and the appearance of the beast in the finale is a little underwhelming - although certainly not the worst I've ever seen. Folk horror has never been my favorite subgenre (sure there are classics like "Viy" and "The Wicker Man") but "The Cursed" kept me invested through its entire duration. There are slight variations on themes that I had never seen before and little storytelling tricks employed that you don't find that often in modern movies. While this isn't a film I'd watch again, I am glad I saw it once. UP NEXT IS A SONG FROM "YOU'RE NEXT:"
