Personally, I think it's unlikely. Picnic at Hanging Rock is one of Criterion's lesser known titles. If you're referring to the Amazon promotion, the ones I think have the most chance of seeing BD first are Au revoir les enfants and/or Kwaidan. French films are extremely popular with foreign film buffs in North America, and Criterion's Japanese titles have always enjoyed much popularity within the collection.

But there is another possibility that I am considering (especially now that Ran has been shot down), and that is Rashomon. It's a Kurosawa, which means it would have a large, built-in fan base, and most importantly, it was just restored in late 2008 and it already out on Blu-ray in Japan since January 2009 (with no English subs). I could see it coming before 2010 on Criterion Blu-ray.

Normally, I would have no idea, but to quote someone from another forum, who i trust that might . . .

"And I have a very strong feeling that this is Rossellini's neorealist trilogy of Rome Open City, Paisan and Germany Year Zero."

What about Seven Samurai? That was just restored as well......

Any idea what the going rate for a Blu-ray trilogy from the fine folks of Criterion would cost?

The don't simply take their MSRP and multiply it by 3, then factor in their standard percentage discount do they?

I'm just curious to see if a trilogy such as this (which is widely agreed upon to be correct at this point) would be obtainable at $60 or so from Amazon? (that would be fantastic )

anyways.... I found this in my "Research" regarding the meaning of the wacky parisian bunnies.... via google... and thought it was hysterical.... so...

I saw the Criterion DVD for "Ran" at a store the other day and I considered buying it. I hesitated because I'm not exactly clear on what's going on with the Blu-Ray version. I am aware that Criterion lost the licensing rights, but are they trying to regnegotiate or have they just given up on this title? I know the DVD is now out of print. My question is: should I pick up the DVD now or wait for this Blu-Ray situation to (possibly) be resolved? I own ALL the Blu-Ray titles that have been released thus far, and I would prefer to have "Ran" on this format (as opposed to DVD). If it's not going to be released then I'm willing to settle for the DVD.

Thoughts?

I'd pick up the DVD..... even "IF" Ran gets released on Blu-ray.... the resale value of the DVD will still be high

(I'd re-sell it upon the first official announcement of a Blu-ray release, as those who don't follow it closely will just assume it's still out of print, with no forthcoming release)

Yeah, I went ahead and picked up a new copy of the "Ran" DVD from the Amazon Marketplace for a price in the lower $20 range. Even Amazon has it for $25 and some change right now. Plus, you'll be getting the extra bonus feature that Criterion was leaving off of the announced blu-ray version.

Yeah, the third post down right here is mention of the "Contempt" blu-ray rights being lost. There just doesn't seem to be much talk about it, yet, though, so I'm still a bit unsure about it.

Missed that. Fortunately, I don't unload much of anything, so the DVD will have to do. Unfortunately, that was the one I was most looking forward to when they pre-announced the first set of tentative titles. And Ran really could have used a Criterion HD do-over... Sigh. Hopefully Walkabout will still get the treatment.

Still waiting for a Marienbad gold box. (Though perhaps I mighta missed it already.)

Edit: My, that amazon price is riding a little high right now, isn't it.

Default Elevator to the Gallows

Hello,

One of my favorite Criterion titles is Louis Malle's "Elevator the the Gallows"
(No. 335). I'd like to see that get a blu-ray release...

Thanks for the Answer about "Picnic at Hanging Rock" . I had watched the Trailers and it looked interesting.

Also since you guys know about pre ordering from Amazon.com.. I was wondering if i Pre-Order. Do they charge my CCard right now or at the time the movie comes out. Thank you in advance.

You won't be disappointed. I picked Ran up near release time for, I think, somewhere in the enighborhood of $25. By far one of the best Criterions I've purchased. Though I do tend to like anything Kurosawa did. I would love to see "The Bad Sleep Well" hit Blu.

Though, since you kinda brought it up, what's everybody doing with their Criterion DVDs? Selling or keeping? Personally, I planned on keeping most of mine. (Yep, even "Bad Timing", what a POS that was)
prolly gonna get some flak for that coment.

I am keeping all of my DVDs...... Criterion and otherwise..... I have 45 or so standard DVDs of which I have the Blu-ray "upgrade" to..... yet I still keep them..... I don't know why.... I just don't usually sell stuff

No, when you pre-order from Amazon, your card is not charged until the item ships. And, if an item drops in price from the time you placed your pre-order until the release date, you will always only be charged the lowest price.

I've been pretty much trading in my standard DVDs, Criterion or not, from the moment the blu-ray has been announced. The only exception is if I see that the blu-ray, for one reason or another, is porting over any major bonus features from the standard DVD.

Of course, it sucks that it usually takes a trade-in of, at least, 3 to 4 DVDs to match even the lowest-priced blu-rays at some places. Oh,well.

I had sold my copy of Ran when the news that it was coming out on blu. It actually took a week or so for it to sell (and I undercut everyone on Half.com when I sell a dvd). I sold it for around $15
Alas, look what happened....Ran on blu was cancelled and I am without a copy. My fault though. I still have hopes that it will come out on blu in the good ole U.S
