Probably the best cheesy movie ever and maybe Verhoeven's best film to date. Richards and Meyer aren't hard on the eyes.

Nine

2 out of 5 stars

Guido (Lewis) is a famous director in 1965 Italy. While he's had a number of outstanding movies throughout his career, his last few have been flops. He's about to undertake his latest masterpiece. However with filming about to start he still has no idea what he's going to shoot and he hasn't even finished a script. With the pressure mounting will he somehow create another classic or another abomination? You either like musicals or you don't. Personally I love them. Blues Brothers, Chicago, Moulin Rouge are all favorites of mine. Nine has a star studded cast and is directed by the same guy who directed Chicago, so It should be terrific right? Sadly this one isn't quite up to the same level. Visually it's terrific and the performers give it there all. While billed as the 'star' of the film Nicole Kidman actually has a small part. Most of the movie is instead carried by Marion Cotillard who plays the lonely wife. So why didn't I like it? For a musical to be amazing it has to have memorable songs. However with the exception of the 'Be Italian' number sung by Fergie there really aren't any. Therefore Nine is a disappointment.

The movie was not scary at all, the special effects could have been much better. the storyline was not boring and i regard this movie as a teenager fantasy horror good to watch as a Sunday afternoon show with popcorn. If you want to see a good horror that scares you, don't watch this!
As I understood it, it was meant to be funny, not too scary. Frankly, aside from the seance scene and the punchline ending, I didn't think it was that funny either.

After rewatching "Evil Dead" though, I have half a mind to watch this again.

Hmm, I never read or heard anywhere that it was scary or funny. It was just a good entertaining horror flick.

That's a 2009 review ripped straight from Metacritic.

Smells like spam to me.

Is there a recent film where the two leads "bring it" any harder than Streep and Hoffman do in this one? Damn!!! It had me hooked from the get go.

Any one who thinks Meryl Streep is not the greatest actress, if not the best all around thespian of all time, has obviously not seen this movie. She is completely on fire.
The scene with her and the boys mother was so intense that it almost burned my eyes right out of their sockets. It was hard to watch.

Plus Amy Adams was great. I love her reaction in the last scene.
Richard Deakins is the cinematographer.
Howard Shore does the score.
Dylan Tichenor is the editor.

5 of my favorite people from show biz (sorry Amy Adams) in one movie. Whew!!

The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo. 4/5.

Really enjoyed, very good adaptation of the book. Will try to catch The Girl Who Played with Fire at the local art theater this weekend. Interested to see it, reviews say it's not as good as the first, but I enjoyed that book more.

Across the Hall - This was one of Brittany's last films before she passed. It was actually a pretty good film for being straight to video. Very suspenseful and a decent story to match. It was a tale about a guy who finds out his girl is at a hotel with someone so he decides to get the room directly across from her. Although Brittany was one of the main characters, the film actually focused more on the two lead actors based on how the story took place. I would actually recommend the film for atleast a rental. It was much better than her last film "Abandoned" which was kinda stale in my eyes as well as some of the bad acting.

Film Rating - 3 1/2 stars (out of 5)

PQ - 4 stars (out of 5)

AQ- 4 stars (out of 5)

Got Em!!

I'm starting to think she's even better than DDL. More roles that's for sure.
Her voice in Doubt alone is oscar worthy. Did Cotilliard win for "La Vie en Rose," or whatever it's called, the same year, or what? There has to be a good reason Streep didn't win.

edit: I see that Winslet won for "The Reader." Haven't seen it, but can it be THAT much better than Streep's performance. I think Meryl suffers from the, "I'm so good and won so many awards that many people are "tired" of me" syndrome. Like if it's a tie, it's gonna go to the new girl or something.

Winslet was excellent in the reader, tough choosing between the two, but I think they made the right decision. They were both excellent, but Winslet certainly had a heaver load to lift.

Are you saying "doubt" has the better all around cast? Guess I'll have to see the Reader now.

Certainly, but I was referring to their importance in the story. Doubt center around several characters, while The Reader is on two, one of which is played by two different actors while Winslet plays the other over an extended time period.

I'll just have to see it. Streep was definitely limited by the fact that she's playing a nun and definitely "helped" by the fact that all her scenes are shared with Hoffman, Davis, and Adams. I just think it's amazing how, as the story develops, our opinion of her character changes from one extreme to the other, with only several discreet instances of "revelation" from her character.

Bingo. Perfection is expected, then delivered, so it gets a ho hum response.

Winslets performance was not in the same league as Streeps IMO.

You have seen Sophies Choice, right? Her body language, eye movements and facial expressions alone are worth 10 Oscars in that performance. Oh, and then theres the accent. Probably the most dedicated to the craft ever.

Streep was certainly great, but she wasn't better than either of Winslet's roles that year (note: I think Winslet should've been nominated for Rev Road and not The Reader). That being said, Angie Jolie in Changeling was far and away the best performance of the year. Imo, it wasn't even close.

I'm not sure if I think Streep is the best actor of all-time or not, but she's certainly top 5. A master of accents and great range. Agreed on Sophie's Choice--arguably the greatest female performance ever.
