Guess this would explain why I didn’t have issues with it. I’ve only watched this in DV and didn’t do a deep dive into the screenshots on my PC; I just threw those here for the curious. But via DV through my Sony X700 on my LG E6 OLED, I had no complaints. Best I’ve ever seen the film look, and it wasn’t particularly close.

Who knew going for the most expensive swagged out vinyl editions would bite you in the ass on shipping last, Shout should be embarrassed, they need to comp these people who went that extra mile. It's literally sitting at stores here right now and I don't even have my normal editions, either. I got excited knowing Diabolik ships a week or two before street date but didn't happen on this one. Direct from Shout being dead last is almost a parody.

Halloween and Halloween II aren't in eco cases probably only because they don't actually make them for the 3-disc capacity. I'm gonna rip a donor case off something like Dark Crystal to transplant my Halloween III in, I hate them too! Even my Rambo cases are full thickness.

i take it 'switching" between dolby vision and regular HDR 10 can be done in player or on the tv in settings?

This is in reference to the oversized black slipcases that house the vinyl and the 4K slipcase containing the film, not the 4K slip itself.

For those who ordered on Amazon and are curious:

Ordered July 8th:
Halloween - Shipped
Halloween II - ETA Oct 26
Halloween III - ETA Oct 11

Ordered September 15th:
Halloween 4 & 5 - No ETA

4 & 5 were my fault for not ordering sooner. But between those and II having such a long wait, I think I will be checking Best Buy tomorrow.

If your set up is Dolby Vision capable, playback will default to Dolby Vision. You’d have to go into tv/player settings to view it in HDR10.

The site review wasn't glowing. I don't get the impression that it is much of an improvement over the Lionsgate UHD.

The summary is incredibly neutral to me:
Quote:
The UHD experience for "Halloween" is nicely cinematic, giving the picture fresh detail and definition, delivering a true sense of the film for 4K enjoyment.
So, a "true sense" of the film, "nicely cinematic" - is this inferring this release is very close to what the original theatrical experience was like? I think I will sit on the sidelines for now.

Gotta say, while I see some compression in those caps I'm guessing like a lot of Criterion discs (not all) it won't be bad in motion. We'll see though, as I let all these ship and most are coming tomorrow.

At the very least, I hope to receive my Scream Factory bundle in time to marathon Halloween and Halloween (dumb title for a direct sequel) in time for Halloween Kills.

As I mentioned previously, older media players from a few years ago went through a time where 24.000 files would stutter because the chips were timed for 23.976, because the chipmaker assumed 23.976 was the standard blu-ray frame rate. Thankfully they figured all that out and corrected that issue finally. If your TV offers true 24Hz support, it should display both 23.976 and 24.000 without any issues, if your player is outputting it properly. The problem with the media players was they weren't outputting properly - they were outputting 23.976 when playing 24.000 files, which resulted in a dropped frame very 42 seconds. Blu-ray players didn't have that issue, only media players.

When setting your TV to 24Hz mode, and your player set to output 24Hz, your TV doesn't do any converting. It displays the actual framerate it's receiving (23.976/24.000). That's the point of 24Hz support on your TV. If you don't have 24Hz support, then everything is converted to 59.94.

If any of this is incorrect, somebody can correct me.
That’s what I mean. I wasn’t talking about TVs that can display at 24 Hz. I’m talking about 60 Hz TVs, which are really 59.94. If you play a disc that’s encoded at 23.976 fps, then the TV will do 3:2 pulldown and multiply the frames by 2.5 so that it conforms to the 59.94 Hz refresh rate. But if the disc is 24 fps, 3:2 pulldown won’t work (I think…?) because then you will have 60 fps displayed on a 59.94 Hz TV, and that’s what made me wonder if there would be problem displaying a 24 fps disc on a 59.94 Hz TV.

As you can see the DV layer is FEL and about 12Mbps average (14% of the total video bitrate). That’d explain why the HDR10 layer doesn’t look as good. I wish they’d check the resulting HDR10 layer instead of just checking it in DV and calling it a day. Studio Canal, and others, have done the same mistake in the past. The compression should look good in both DV and HDR10. In this case the HDR10 layer isn’t a total disaster imo but it definitely doesn’t look as good as it does in DV either.
The size of the DV layer means little in relation to what the HDR10 looks like in itself, I mean check that average bitrate: 71 Mb/s, are you kidding me? That’s FAR higher than most studio UHDs…and yet somehow it’s still farting out all the blockiness. Why, it’s almost as if you can’t just throw a high bitrate at something and expect it to be properly attuned to the content that’s being compressed. It didn’t take long for Shout to revert to their old ways on UHD, did it? As you alluded to, it’s like they aksed StudioCanal for the number of the place that does their usual shite

You get the wrong impression.

I mean yeah, the geometry is correct now, the colors are much better, there’s more fine object detail, the ratio is consistent, the mono is included, and it’s from the negative instead of the interpositive, but otherwise, there’s really nothing better about it.

When people ask if members here just sit down and enjoy movies anymore, it’s things like this they’re referring to. You’ve effectively talked yourself out of a great release based on one review (that’s a 4.5/5 for PQ, mind you) because the reviewer didn’t seem enthused *enough* and are thinking there’s not much of an improvement despite those of us who’ve actually watched the thing telling you that there is.

This forum is great, and it’s an invaluable resource, but it also makes me pretty sad sometimes. There are so many supposed issues with these releases that I would probably never see or hear if it weren’t for people around here wringing their hands over every little thing. I guarantee if I based my buying decisions on these forums exclusively, I’d own maybe ten 4K discs.
