What did you guys think of Peter Jackson's extended cut? When I saw the film in theatres, I wanted more from the world. Once I got this release and saw the extended cut, I thought it was just too much lol which kinda ruined the film's pacing on the island.

I enjoyed the underwater creature attacking the rafts quite a bit and think the entire sequence should have remained intact. I don't think it hurt the pacing at all.

I thought it was too long myself. It was nice to see that they tried to copy a lot more of the original Kong over to the movie that didn't make it into the theatrical release.

I do think Jackson over extends Kong's suffering in the finale, it just goes on and on as he gets weaker and weaker.

I enjoy the additional scenes in the extended cut.

And ultimately, I love this film far more than I should. Generally, I am not a huge fan of remakes. Snobby I know, but I do acknowledge there have been good ones, including the occasional example where it surpasses the original. In addition to that, I am even less of a fan when a movie tries to remake the movie as directly as possible, which is basically what we'd say about the 2005 movie (extended as it may be). If the original was good worthy, why bother right? But this movie just WORKS somehow. It's such a wonderful love letter to the original, but it also is effective as its own movie. Such great work was done with making Skull Island an eerie, unforgiving environment. Nothing against Skull Island in the new MonsterVerse, but this one was better in my opinion.

And as it should, the movie feels like a throwback to a classic Hollywood adventure drama - which aside from the time of production, it basically is. Lastly, I'll say that it's a very narratively conclusive story, so I am happy that unlike prior Kong movies, no sequel/spin-off was made.

I still can't seem to find any settings that tame this into a natural look throughout.

You could try HDR Optimizerf you have a Panasonic UHD played like 820 and see if that fixes many of the blown out highlights

Of course I am using a projector, but I found this disc unwatchable before getting the 820. I was using custom Arve curves and the only way I could watch this disc was to create a separate curve for this disc alone. With the 820 and the Optimizer On, I put this disc in and was rather pleased. Yes, it's very bright, but I just turn down the luminance slider several clicks and bam. Very presentable. That said, there are too many moments of heavy processing/DNR that annoy me and I probably prefer the BD in all honesty.

Yeah. Universal really botched this one. They already had an arguably pristine DI or a master. All they had to do is HDR grading which is overdone alongside pushing the contrast knob way too high and applying DNR

I prefer the look of the BD despite the poor VC-1 compression.

Having the same problem with mine, as I’m a projector user too. A quick question tho. How did you get access to the luminance slider? I tried using it but it always says its only meant for SDR content, not HDR, and it doesn’t let me access to it. Or do you mean luminance slider on your projector?

It isn't a consistent movie in whatever verstion we got. Some of the stuff added in is solid. While the overlong parts that were in the theatrical still drag the extended.

Take out the Brontosaurus (or whatever) running bit, stfu about Heart of Darkness, etc etc. And it'd be better w/ some of extended version bits.

There's a consistently good movie in there somewhere. But Jackson is excess and excess.

I LOVE the Ann Darrow here. Naomi Watts and Andy Serkis are perfect in this. But Jackson needs to edit this thing down. I enjoy the film, flaws and all, but it's got a lot of issues. Again, there's a really good movie in there somewhere but it's issue is in the editing. Cut some shit out.

Maybe he means Dynamic Range Adjustment or just the brightness?

How are the a/v quality and bonus features? I have the German BD but am very tempted by this release since I LOVE the film.

I don't recall exactly what it's called because on 90%+ discs I don't need to touch it and haven't bothered with it in a while. But it controls the tone map and overall brightness. If you're not able to access it with a UHD BD, it sounds like you have the player set-up for Blu-ray only.

I did take a peek and it looks great to me and the sound is WAAAAYYYY better than the french release i have which I hated. I'm watching it on a 134in screen, if you love the film like I do, I would grab this one. Who know when the US will get a proper release

Mate,

I don't care what others think but this is a big screw job and you can only do much (like messing around with the optimiser, hdr slider, contrast etc.). You will never be left satisfied. I would happily watch the poorly compressed VC-1 16 Mbps BD over this over-cooked UHD. Some of the early Universal releases have been disappointing but at least they have learned from their mistakes and are now doing a great job.
