Piccadilly and Salaam Bombay! were planned as scanavos, but due to case shortages they had to switch to I believe Viva cases. These cases have also been used to distinguish reissues sans booklet, such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

I should note:

Q&A is on BFI YouTube

The Jenkin/Strickland conversation is actually a future event at Southbank on 29th January, if anyone happens to be around London then.

Haunters of the Deep was previously released on the CFF compilation Scary Stories, is screening at Southbank on 8th/14th January, and will be made available on BFI Player on 19th January.

I definitely think I’ll try and make the cinema release from the 13th.

Bait was my favourite film of 2019 so I am ALL over this. Going to the Cameo for a Jenkin Q&A on my birthday.

I see a lot of BFI blu’s are on sale at rarewaves at the moment for under £8 - I picked up a few (Shooting Stars, Dementia and Red Desert) the other day, but was thinking about delving further into the Flipside range. Schalcken the Painter is the only one I currently own which I picked up for peanuts on ebay, but was thinking about adding Deep End and Voice Over which both look intriguing. Anyone with any particularly strong thoughts on those or any of the other Flipsides?

I highly recommend getting ALL the flipside releases. You'll have to hunt down a copy of Peter Watkins' Privilege as that is the ONLY way to get the extras Because the BFI are re-releasing the film WITHOUT the 2 short films as they lost the rights to them.

You would hope the BFI are producing many more booklets than the 1,000 they did for Bait. These sold out pre-release and many with pre-orders missed out.

They now know the director sells well and folk horror is a much more popular genre so they are likely to sell multiple thousands of copies as pre-orders.

Remember also that Deep End had a standard and limited edition version.

The LE adds a DVD with following additional extras
"Recalling Deep End" featurette (24:57)
Re-issue Trailer (1:03)
Was I believe only 1,000 copies (I have one) and now worth serious money.

The standard, still available, has these extras on the film disc.
"Starting Out: The Making of Deep End" documentary (78:05)
"Deep End: The Deleted Scenes" a discussion of this now lost material (12:45)
"Careless Love" 1976 short film directed by Francine Winham (10:08)
Original Theatrical Trailer (4:26)

That LE version of Deep End must have been very scarce as I never managed to track it down for a reasonable price (saw a few on eBay for silly money), whereas I didn't have too much trouble getting Cassavetes' The Killing of a Chinese Bookie with the bonus disc and slipcover.

As I said think it was only 1,000 copies.

Got one as an Amazon pre-order but was instantly sold out. However, they found some more copies down the back of the sofa as one of the retailers (can't remember who) sold off quite a few copies a long time later at a fair price.

The other you mention never had quoted edition size (just I think a first pressing point I expect) so would have been multiple thousand copies.

Deep End was designed to sell out, probably not as fast as it did, as was more expensive than the regular version with both released at the same time.

Flipside is the only numbered run of any label I've kept up to date with, sure I have the LE of Deep End but can't lay my hands on it. Although, I am trying to pick up all the BFI CFF releases.

I would say Chinese Bookie is the more attractive LE with a lengthy documentary and short film over a 25 minute featurette for Deep End. It’s a LE where I’d get a copy if I found it for about the same price as the standard release, but I couldn’t imagine spending lots on it.

Thinking of taking out a BFI Player subscription after generating quite a long watchlist from the latest Sight & Sound poll. Is the service worth it?

I've had a free trial of it for 5 or 6 weeks (stumbled upon an offer) which expires in a few days and I won't be keeping it on.

This is partly just because times are tight financially. Partly because I didn't use it that much. (The content is good but not a huge amount for me personally that I haven't seen/don't own/can't get elsewhere.)

But another key issue was that I find it too clunky to try and watch on my TV. Since I'm reduced to casting from the browser on my phone - and doing that has some annoying quirks.
I'm not interested in trying to watch films on a PC.

Details on how (difficult it can be) to watch it here: https://player.bfi.org.uk/help
See "How do I watch films?"

Though an alternative might be to subscribe to the BFI 'channel' on Amazon Prime rather than going direct to BFI - and then having it available more easily on more devices. Not sure how much of the content is common to both routes.

Bear in mind too that even after you subscribe there are multiple titles on BFI Player which are "rentals" and require an additional payment.

Ultimately, I suppose it will depend how many films you can get on BFI that you want to see and can't get elsewhere.

Can cancel at any time so could always binge your list and then curtail your sub after a couple of months.

Hopefully someone who's used it more than the pitiful 2 or 3 times I have can come along here and give you a better indication of its value!

Was surprised to see a copy of Bait with a booklet in HMV last month. Already had bought a cheap copy ages ago (sans booklet) so I left it.

I’ve never ordered directly from BFI shop. How’s their shipping to the US? I figured it would be similar to Eureka’s in terms of how long it takes.

Just take to note, that international deliveries will be delayed while the Royal Mail recovers from a cyberattack.
