It's the Special Edition version (ugh, mostly) but, it came out just a few months before I was born. My first Cinema Star Wars was a Drive-In for "Return of the Jedi."
I want to go watch it as I never saw this or Star Wars on "the big screen" but I'm wary of the possible health situation that may arise, seeing as we're experiencing a surge in cases.
While the Sequels killed most of my interest in the saga, I'd still like to experience some of it how it was meant to be seen... Huge arse theater...
I would't worry too much about it being the SE. I saw all the films in a theater, both the original and SE editions, and I'm not sure I noticed most of the changes. We only recognize them today because they've been so well documented on web sites and social media. There are some scenes in which Lucas added a bunch of creatures or additional space ships that wasn't really necessary, but they really don't do any harm either.

If it's not a 70mm print with magnetic sound that hasn't faded and still has a full frequency response on the mag tracks, then it isn't how it was originally meant to be seen anyway. Frankly, I haven't heard about any film prints being around - you might want to call the theater and see what the source is because I wouldn't be surprised to find out that it's a Blu-ray and whether it is or isn't, I'm surprised Disney is permitting a showing. If it is a Blu-ray, it's a totally different sound mix.

About a year ago, Close Encounters played in Dolby theaters and I was really disappointed with the presentation. IMO, it was nothing like the original 70mm release or the 70mm release of the expanded edition which had some edits and the additional scene at the end. It looked and sounded bad.

I recognized most of the changes when I first saw the Special Edition on VHS.
The altered lines between Boba and Vader and the worst altered line was Luke's when talking to Artoo after he got eaten and spit back out. "You're lucky you don't taste very good." to "You're luck to have gotten out of there."
Then there's all the Vader and Emperor dialogue changes, in addition to the less creepy looking Ian from the more creepy Monkey eyed lady.

And back then, it wasn't so well documented.

I hear ya, but to me that Broom Boy scene still accomplishes the story beat: "the legend of the Resistance is spreading". I don't need Broom Boy himself to be a part of the final battle in TROS to make the connection that if the story got to Broom Boy and his friends, then it got to many others throughout the galaxy. Still works for me!

I like this, thanks for suggesting it.

Still think overall RoS feels like a "forget all that crap" movie though.

Happy birthday to the filmmaker that directed two Star Wars films that are in my top 5, did what I didn't think possible by intensifying my love for the franchise, created the two best SW characters of all-time (Rey Skywalker/Ben Solo), discovered Daisy Ridley, and wrapped up the saga in such a gratifying way (especially impressive given the immense time crunch he was under).

JJ, Ruin and Kennedy were the worst things to happen to LucasFilm/Star Wars!

The entire main cast of the OT says hello.

You're actually serious aren't you?!

I like the new films but they just don't compare to the OT in any shape or form.

I still think the Lucas era of 1997-2012 was the worst thing to happen to Star Wars, encompassing the prequel trilogy, the rough start to the Clone Wars series (bad theatrical film), and three revisions of the original trilogy, each one making the films significantly worse overall.

To me the Disney era is about on par with the expanded universe of the 90's. I actually like all the films they've released so far, although I have specific issues with each of the films, too. So it's a mixed bag, IMO. They need to stop letting Kathleen Kennedy making decisions.

Yeah a lot of people are still in the “anti-honeymoon” phase (I guess that’s what I would call it? Where people dislike something so much at first but then grow to like it as time goes on) but I still say that The Force Awakens is an absolutely brilliant movie and so much better than niche groups of nerds give it credit for. Rise of Skywalker is a blast too.

Insulting people, by calling them "A niche group of nerds" on a forum dedicated to physical media. Really?

Rise of Skywalker is a mess of a film. The writing is off and the pacing is terrible. The plot is basically build on a series of moments of luck and pure coincidence. Yes, it's a movie. Suspension of disbelief and all that. But RoS takes it way too far.

I love Force Awakens.

These are flaws of the movie... 4 hours in 2:20, feels very set-piece focused... but I think it's still a fun romp. I'd say much the same of TFA though, and that feels better paced, so I guess I'd give it the edge. Last Jedi is a weird little movie I'm still not sure what I think of after three watches, but... honestly I'd give all these movies a 3 out of 5. They're all "okay." I don't feel compelled to praise/bash any significantly more than the others.

Rogue One and Solo are much better though, if we're ranking.

I could write a whole essay about the problems with The Last Jedi, but I will refrain. But hey, all film are subjective.

First, who said I was insulting anyone? Second, I wasn’t necessarily talking about anyone here. This place is actually pretty tame (outside of a couple users) compared to some other online communities where people are absolutely (unwarrantedly) vicious towards these movies.
