The cover will tell you what kind of movie it is and the 3d is strong. Only you know if it is worth $12.99. I decided it was for me.

Kong of Skull Island, as I suspect will be the case for many.

Wont say anything about the storyline for those who have yet to see it except that considering the Kong legacy, it was a refreshing new take with originality and was very enjoyable. So its no remake in any stretch.

As for the 3D. It was there. Definitely better than a flat picture. Quite colorful and sharp. But either I have become so used to 3D or it was the film itself that made it appear just average. While some of the action scenes had strong 3D, overall KOSI just failed to make the best use of the depth that the cinematography seemed begging for. No pop outs nor sense of background distance further behind the character and the monsters.

Still a pleasant 3D outing but I was expecting more.

Again, is it possibly me more than the film? Am I getting spoiled by tremendous efforts like The Wall, Dr. Strange, the Hobbit series. Bob's releases of those fifties classics that I'm coming down too hard on what might be lesser but still good 3D efforts?

Watched:

A huge bore of a film. Some of the set pieces are neat, but I was at no point invested or caring about anything that happened on screen. Some nice upper medium and seven strong looking shoots can't save this film.

If you are going to check it out, 3d is going to be the better experience, but the only way i'd recommend watching this is if it comes to the streaming service you are using already.

A lot of fun to be had here, a lot of the humour falls flat and the Chinese actress is clearly there for no other reason but to secure a Chinese release (she literally seems to have been added after the script was finished with the character having no reason to be in the film, she also gives a notably worse performance then the rest of the case as well, which only makes matters worse).

Still the monsters are fun and some of the action and how it is shoot is sublime (the sunset outline of Kong when you first really see him for example). I found the 3d very pleasing as well. Mostly medium but amping up here and there throughout the film.

I found the 3d better then I remember the Hobbits being, and whilst it is no Dr Strange I felt it used it's 3d effectively to enhance the film. That is what I want out of the format.

Put simply. I don't want the film to support the use of 3d. I want the 3d to support the intentions of the film, and I feel Kong achieved that quite nicely.

After failing to find a copy within a hundred mails of me, I broke down and ordered Kong: Skull Island from Amazon. It irks me to spend 30 bucks on a movie but I can't resist a giant ape.

Woah, nice catch.

Isn't that a Japan-only 3D BD for like $100?

Resident Evil Damnation is one of the few 3D movies it's actually worth importing from Japan.

Last night I watched Smurfs: The Lost Village in 3D

The 3D wasn't particularly strong, with the usual fishtank look I've come to expect from conservative animated 3D. You have a swarm of dragonflies, for example, but they don't really swarm out of the screen. However, volume and separation are very good and there is plenty of mild but blatant screen-breaking during the action scenes, so it's better than you'd get from Disney Pixar. A couple of lovely deep cave shots are the best you get from the depth. An interesting mid-credits bit shows off the 3D nicely too. It's all super-colourful and bright already so I can't see any point to watching it flattened out in 4K.

Funnily enough, the film reminded me a bit of Avatar with a bit of Minuscule thrown in. Papa Smurf and Gargamel's voices both sounded wrong to me and I found it disappointing how the film again only focused on a few Smurfs while completely sidelining the others. The plot couldn't be more by-the-numbers if it tried (which it doesn't).

After that I watched Working For Peanuts which is more like layered 2D, but still a pleasure.

Bought and watched:

Just watched this. The 3d is consistently nice, but not spectacular. The film is clearly made as a 3d film, but ultimately never pushes into strong territory and several shoots seemed begging for it.

As for the film itself, I got a few kicks seeing smurfs so well designed and animated but that wore of quickly. The film simply isn't very good and has 6 montages to a modern pop song. The direction and story felt very rushed and lazily made.

Solid 3d, but the film is very sub par and I can't imagine many are going to be anything more then mildly satisfied at best.

Thought I got a great a score yesterday. Was at a pawn shop in a neighboring state that had a nice selection of blu-ray for the princely sum of 4 for $9.

Picked up The Final Destination in 3D with mint lenticular slipcover as one of my four. Got home and opened it to see it was the Anaglyph 3D version. Oh well, guess I'll keep the slipcover and order the proper version when I see it for a decent price.

I really enjoyed this one...but I am a sucker for elephants and orangutans. Beautifully shot with the occasional (but rare) pop-outs. I'm gonna sound like a sap, but these docs get me teary eyed when I see human kindness at these sanctuaries.

I thought this would be lame, but I enjoyed it. Some of the acting was iffy...and it took awhile to get to the eruption, but lot's of fighting before that. Fun in 3D, especially the climax.
