you should install LAV filters and MADVr to use with MPC player and then MADVr can tone map it to sRGB SDR

My wife adores Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast...she grew up with those films. But after enduring being married to me, she finally admitted this week Pinocchio and Fantasia and Bambi stomp those movies into the ground in terms of craft. I told her it's not the fault of the artists, they were working with the budget they were given, Mermaid is a joy and so is Beauty and the Beast, even if they can't rival what Walt and his crew were throwing down in 1940-1942.

I agree, I'll even add the 50's film as ones with superior animation than those of the 90's, especially Sleeping Beauty.

Hand on my heart, I agree with both what you and Ernest Rister said. There are some pure magic about Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi and the 50's movies. They're just gold. Although Mermaid is my all-time favorite movie (Disney or not), I have a special place for the movies mentioned above. I grew up with Pinocchio, although my love didn't really start until much later. Fantasia, I didn't see until much later in life, but I loved it imiddiately! When I was a kid, I though Bambi was one of the most boring movies from Disney and I never really saw it for many years, but when the Platinum Edition DVD came out I got it and I fell in love with it! The animation, the music, the characters! Such a masterpiece.

The 50's have some of my favorite Disney movies as well. Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp and Sleeping Beauty. They are all great!

It's pretty cool to see an pretty objective take on those films regardless of bias. The Little Mermaid is my second favorite Disney film, but the labor poured into Walt's First Five often has me daydreaming what its animation would have looked like had it not been created during Disney's dark age. It's not bad, just anemic. I think the same thing about Cinderella following the package films, and even those were richer in general than TLM. The amount of and attention to detail you get with Snow White and Sleeping Beauty is just stellar.

So true I really wish Disney would make a hand-drawn animated feature again. There is just something special about that technique that the CGI features don't have. I don't mind CGI, but I much prefer the hand-drawn animation.

Anyway, back to The Little Mermaid What is everyones favorite scene from the movie? Mine is Crash the Wedding when Scuttle and his animal friends stall the wedding between Prince Eric and Vanessa. It's just such a funny scene, the way the animals attack Vanessa. xD I mean, Ursula as Vanessa looks just like your beautiful Disney Princess and that's what I love about her. Can you imagine this scene taking place with either Ariel, Belle or Cinderella in Vanessa's place?

Dayum, I'm surprised Disney's finally releasing these 4Ks to the UK. Huzzah!

I don't expect most people to understand, but I will probably never watch a CG animated feature again. The only scenario in which I can see myself consuming them again is if the big animation studios like Disney and Dreamworks start producing some handdrawn animations again. It's not that I hate CG animation. But I prefer handdrawn animation by a mile and feel pretty lousy to get none from them for so many years now. If they don't wanna give me what I want, I don't see why I should continue to support them. Haven't watched any CG animations in three and a half years now.

Check out Spider-Verse and Your Name if you haven't already. Terrific work.

I wasn't expecting these releases at all and I am surprised as well. I already imported some of them from the US (the steelbooks) but I might also get these as well to show Disney I'll support their other catalogue releases as well.

I am just praying for all their earlier classics like The Jungle Book, Pinocchio, Bambi etc. will make it to 4k, but that's not gonna happen.

The negatives of the vintage Disney films were captured at 4k but mastered at 2k for home video. To bring Fantasia or Bambi to a 4K environment, they'd have to master and color-time and dust-bust them all over again. I know, they're national treasures, so why not, but apparently they aren't in a big hurry.

They'd rather spend $200 million on live-action remakes of their classic animated back catalogue than spending $10 million apiece to properly restore the originals.

Because the remakes so far have given them billions of dollars while restoring their classics wouldn't. I mean these are two different unrelated things...

The 3D version resembles old-school multiplane, so there's that.

Favorite scene from Mermaid? Tough question. Don't hate me, but my wife and me make fun of Prince Eric as he comes off as a bit of a dolt. I guess I'd have to go with Part of Your World but have to give some love to Chef Louie. A little over the top, but who cares. Also have a soft spot for Buddy Hackett.

Haha, no worries. I do think the same think about Prince Eric. The same does one of my best friends. xD So gald to hear we ain't the only ones who thinks that.
The Part of Your World sequence is definitely a highlight in the movie, for sure. Not only because of the song, but also the beautiful animation that goes with it. It's the heart of the movie.
The Chef Louis sequences are really fun! I love the animation of him!
Buddy was great as Scuttle. But I do think the whole cast did a superb job of voicing their animated characters.

Which, specifically for me, is a huge draw; this my go-to version atm. Even though I have TLM 4K, I don't own a 4K player / TV, so it'll be interesting to see if that remains the case once I do.

Yeah, the "I Want" song for Mermaid is Disney's strongest, imho. Jodi has such an amazing voice, and I always look forward to the reprise just as much. It's my #2 Disney film, but it has my favorite soundtrack. Had to get those Legacy Collection CDs and see it performed by an orchestra at my local symphony.

That being said, Crashing the Wedding is an epic scene, and seeing Ariel get her voice back is so satisfying. It's probably my favorite moment in the film.

* * *

Buddy Hackett is hilarious, and Scuttle is a little unsung hero of the film. I feel like he usually gets glossed over in promo materials, is the first to get left out of any ensemble shots (just look at home video artwork), merchandise, etc. It's small, but I was kindof thrilled to see him representing the film on the spine of Target's 4K Signature Collection exclusive.
