Dream Theater is an extremely talented band and I do enjoy a lot of their music but I do think there are slightly better prog bands out there now. Riverside, Ayreon, Opeth and Porcupine Tree just to name few, check them out if you like them (DT) though.

Yeah, I have to agreed. As a DT fan since '92, I thought they started showing some signs of slight decline in their last couple albums, especially on SC. The new one sounds ok, but some parts sound like a rush job.

Anyway, let's say I want somewhat of a balance between melodic compositions and metal, which band(s) would you recommend?

I agree with you on the decline but with Images And Words as a starting point it's really hard not to decline ....Regarding melodic type metal, if you like female singers I would definitely recommend The Gathering's Mandylion and Nighttime Birds. Maybe Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime, Firewind's Allegiance, Helloween's The Dark Ride and Keeper Of The Seven Keys: The Legacy are just some.

Well, but they did managed to give us Awake and Scenes From A Memory.

Thanks, I will check them out. By the way, the more I listen to Opeth, the more I like them. Generally I don't like "cookie monster" style singing, but there is just something about Opeth, man.

I personally think Still Life is their best but Opeth fans will argue against any album, which is good because they've had so many solid releases.

No problem dude, good thing thing about Akerfeldt is that he doesn't have that full-out incomprehensible voice. Plus, his regular singing voice is fantastic.

He's going to do a project with Steven Wilson that will most likely change the axis of the earth when it comes out. He did a project with Dan Swano (Edge of Sanity) and I guess they only recorded one song but it left me wanting MUCH more from them.

Sorskogen

Also check out Opeth's cover of Remember Tomorrow on the Up The Irons tribute to Iron Maiden. 'Tis sweetness.

Lol, I agree the Opeth fanbase will come out in droves to praise it no matter what. Either way, Porcupine Tree and Opeth has to be something special. Thanks for the info. Yes, that IS quite a cover.

I would also put Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence in the same company as these albums! I think it's some of DT's finest work!

My pick of 09 would be Wrath from Lamb of god. They are back on track after the sub par, Sacrament.

Haven't checked out the new Dream Theater yet. I heard the single, thought it was good. I can only take them in small doses though..once they start getting into the extended Nintendo keyboard solos I have had enough. They did a good cover of "To Tame a Land". Not the typical Iron Maiden cover.

It has some good stuff but Sacrament was a letdown after Ashes of the Wake. Wrath is almost as good as Ashes.

Sacrament reminds of the "Great Southern Trendkill" from Pantera. When Pantera released "Far Beyond Driven" Pantera got huge and everyone expected another CD like that. Then GSTK came out..and meh..its ok..maybe a few good songs

Great picks man, Man Who Would Not Die and Ayreon's 0100101 was up there too. I couldn't stop listening to either of them.

I regards to LOG's releases recently, I have Ashes, Sacrament and then Wrath, I just couldn't get into Wrath as much as Sacrament. Wrath was still a good album though.
