Bumping this dormant thread. But did anyone get the Mill Creek Blu? Was wondering how it compared to the Sony Blu. Specifically in regards to the audio changes that have been noted in this thread.

What I have gathered, is that the 2009 Sony Blu adds a musical cue, and removes a "thank you" - compared to the 2006 SE DVD. So I was wondering where the Mill Creek Blu stood, as far as these two items.

Thanks.

Get the Sony disc; it's better all around. Extras are still included, it has lossless audio, subtitles are included, 50 GB vs 25 GB sized disc, and it's about the same price (or cheaper) than the inferior Mill Creek disc.

depends on where you get it from. I got the Mill Creek version for a buck - yeah $1 - at Frys Electronics in SoCal on 5/29. If it turns out to be good enough, will get the Sony edition at a later date.

I got the Sony Blu for $7 at FYE today. I might still get the Mill Creek version if it had the correct audio.

Agreed - just finished watching Blue Thunder for the first time in years; very creepy & almost prophetic in a way. Back in the '80's this type of thing was science-fiction, but now this type of surveillance is commonplace.

In any case, BT was a great action movie that was way ahead of it's time.

Please advise : I almost bought the wrong version (?). Is the Sony SE version really that different? The site's pages say that it has lossless sound (vs. Dolby 5.1) and comes on a BD 50 as opposed to the Mill Creek BD-25. Do these differences result in noticeable audio/video improvements?

Well the audio won't sound as good. Same transfer.

I knew that IF it was really lossless it would sound better but sometimes BD-50's will look better due to less compression and more "room to breathe". Anyway, I wound up getting this one on eBay for $12.43 after using $7.58 in eBucks. So far - sweet!

Anyone with the Mill Creek Blu-ray that can comment on these audio issues?

I'll have to open my copy I got on Black Friday to check for you. Do you have specific time or chapters?

No, I don't. I saw this discussed awhile back at IMDB forums, may have been more detail there regarding time stamp, but those forums are of course gone now. Here's some quotes from this forum, describing the two scenes in question.

"I watched Blue Thunder on Blu-ray the other night after getting it at Best Buy. I have seen the film a number of times, but I don't recall any missing scenes. I did catch something though, a line from the film that was in the theatrical version and the DVD, but was omitted from the Blu-ray. I am curious if anyone else noticed, or perhaps I am losing my mind. The scene is when Cochran is back at the helipad and the military helicopter lands. He grabs a helmet and climbs in but gets denied take-off. He decides to take off anyways and as he takes off from the LAPD helipad to try and take down Murphy, I remember him say (in a smart-ass tone) "Thank you" to the flight controllers, kind of like in a I'm taking off anyways, you guys can't stop me way."

"I just took a look at the BD, and can confirm that Malcolm McDowell has no line when he takes off after Roy Scheider. And yes, there is music playing when the Blue Thunder ducks behind the industrial smokestack McDowell shoots up with his machine guns."

"Just got the Blu-ray edition and noticed changes to the soundtrack. Like when Murphy tries to dodge Cochrane by banking behind the smokestack, music was added for some reason. I prefer the original way without music as at that point the action alone suspends you."

"The part where Cochran tells the control tower "thank you" when they deny him permission to take off but he does anyway is missing!"

"Well the Special Edition DVD from 2006 has the "Thank You" loud and clear. Also, that DVD does not add any music to the dogfight, specifically when Blue Thunder dodges behind the smokestack to avoid Cochrane's fire. No music there at all, just gunfire and explosive impacts on the smokestack itself."

I just got the Mill Creek version for $3 and it looks and sounds good enough for an 80's action flick.

I think this is only the second time I've ever watched it.

No audio or subtitles to select and it only has 5 chapters.

Too bad about those alterations on the Blu-ray version. (Are they on both releases?) I know they are kind of minor, and I probably wouldn't care about the additional music during the final battle, but I've always loved that "Thank you" line as McDowell is taking off.

Lightbulb Blue thunder - audio changes

I just looked at both the original DVD edition from SONY and the Blu-Ray Edition from SONY. Here is what is and what is not (on the disc(s)):

- the line "thank you" has, indeed, been left out on the master that was used for the SONY Blu-ray edition - for whatever reason. It certainly was on the 35mm DeLuxe release prints; and therefore, of course, on the 35mm magnetic tracks. The line is very much still there on the High Definition Master used for the SD DVD.

- the music cues, however, are identical and very much CORRECTLY present on both original SONY DVD and Blu-Ray Discs.

one "side" note:
the master used for the original SD DVD edition in 1998 was Standard Definition at its source. The master for the much later released SONY Blu-ray edition is of higher Resolution than 1080 HD and was as far as I can make out scanned on an IMAGICA. The quality of the original SONY Blu-ray disc is, for the most part, therefore excellent. The only thing that could have been balanced better/more correctly in color are the shades in yellow within/to red. These are a bit reduced, which affects facial tissue being a bit too reddish and fireball explosions are missing yellowish tones a bit, as well. But this is "bickering on the highest of levels". Otherwise, the SONY Blu-ray edition is very well worth getting.

Great.

Let's contact Sony to fix this.
