I am expecting my Australian set to come next week.

For now here she is in all her glory:

just a little teaser in 1080p

***this is the new french BD. they used a new source and remastered it with the approval of the director***

demiscy thank you for your contribution

I myself don't know what version to get and which version would be the "superior".

You should wait for a US or UK release.

The Australian has the subtitles, the French has the perfect video picture.

So the french doesn't have english subs? that's just ridiculous

But I've heard from Suntory_Times that the australian looks wonderful thinking back, it's just so damn confusing with all the different releases.

It really sucks that this is sold out everywhere. Should be in stock next week though.

I traded in a bunch of my DVDs for store credit and now I have a couple of Amelie BDs. I can trade with stuff I don't have. Just saying.

Oh, it looks amazing BTW... it's as if watching it again for the first time.

I ordered mine (australian version) several days ago on the Chaos website. They even convert it to local currency for you and the postage (to UK anyway) wasn't much. I gave up waiting for Ezydvd to get it back in stock. Hope to have it soon. Will post my feedback on PQ after I've watched it.

During the first moments of the film, after the logos, there are some opening credits. I notice there are lots of horizontal lines running through the black background, but not through the yellow text. I never noticed it the first time I played it, but this time they're there.

Is my copy weird or is this in the original source material?
I just checked this with my disc, and I also can see these lines. I don't think I would have noticed this, if I hadn't read your comment. My old DVD doesn't show these lines, so I don't think, that these lines are part of the source material. But it's not a dealbreaker for me (I hardly notice them, especially if I concentrate on the text).

I just had a quick look into the Australian release and IMHO it looks just great. I compared it with some screenshots of the Japanese Sony disc I had found here on avsforum, and it looks the same to me (except for a slight difference in color, that most likely will be due to differences with my setup). Unfortunately I cannot take any screenshots, because I lack the required software (I cannot bypass the copy protection...).

I really cannot imagine the French release to look any different/better. Maybe/Hopefully there will be a proper comparison sometimes in the future, but for now I'm very happy with my purchase, and would recommend the Australian release to anyone in need of English subtitles.

Just my 2 cents.

Well if the Japanese BD looks the same with the Australian one, to you, then we have a BIG problem.. From what I can see from the avs forum screenshots, the colours are all "washed out" compared to the French edition. This means that they DID use a different source and did a remaster. You can see it clearly from the computer screen shots I post below.

Comparison between French and Canadian BDs. I will do the same with the Australian when I receive it within the week

For the moment I do not see a big problem. I just compared your screenshots of the French blu-ray with my Australian disc, and except for a different color timing (especially on skin tones) I cannot see any other differences. Image detail seems to be the same to me. In regard to the differences in color, that I can see on my setup (!) when comparing your screenshots of the French disc with my Australian disc, I couldn't tell which one looks better. Also, I often do encounter different colors on screenshots vs. what I see on my setup. So in the end, both discs (Australian and French) might even look the same in regard to the colors. We need some caps from the same source - everything else is quite pointless .

Funny thing is, that on another forum, one member was complaining about boosted colors on the Australian release .

Yes, but only the difference between the French and the Canadian release. But I'm looking forward to a/your comparison between the French and the Australian release .

PS: Thanks for the caps!

I found again some older shots of the Sony Disc on hdd, that I couldn't find yersterday... Again, my Australian disc looks quite identical to the Sony caps.

An example of French vs. Sony.

Actually, I think I like the image of the Sony disc better than the shot of the French disc. The skin looks too red (and contrast boosted ?) to me on the French screenshot - at least this is not what I remember Amelie to look like. Just my opinion of course, but I'll stick with my English subtitled Australian disc .

I haven't compared the two, but the above pics aren't exactly fair as there not the exact same moment in the film so the differences in PQ could be for various reason either then for the transfer.

Calm down. It's a screenshot setting issue. Whoever took the JP shots took them all at TV levels, while the other shots were taken at expanded PC levels. All releases should look very similar since they would all be derived from the same digital intermediate based master.

In 2001 not all studio's where using digital intermediates (I don't believe Amelie did). Plus the candian release is 1080i 50hrtz.

Amelie was actually the first movie to use a DI (or one of the first).

You can always check on the technical page of IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0211915/technical

And Canada does not use 50hz, they use 60hz like the US. Thus the Canadian release as 1080i60. I was referring to the richer colors of both the French and Canadian release, not the framerate.

Cheers, I didn't know imdb had information like that and was wrong. 60hrtz will still lead to a speed up film and interpolation of frames (as 24 doesn't go into 60), so the canadina release should be inferior in any case. That bieng said it could still in theory look beter (if it is from a better source). I didn't mean to suggest anything different. I think it's farely safe to say the video trasnfers are likely to go:
1) French and Australina release
2) Canadian release
3) dvd releases
