You cannot have it both ways...You disqualify Superman II because (even though several countries had the movie released in 1980,) it did not get a US release until 1981.

Then in the same breath you allow "Long Good Friday" which was not released in the US until April 2, 1982.

US release date is all that counts in my book and it was not released until the Summer that Raiders of the Lost Ark was....take out the long good friday I dont care I will change my list. Jeez even these best of lists threads can't go untainted. Maybe all thes polls and lists should just go bye bye? Czar you might want to specify in the future US release dates because if a movie opens in say Tasmania 2 weeks before the end of the year it wont count.

Will that help when your getting Ferris Buellers Day Off on some lists? As Duke Henry The Red would say "I do not think they'll listen."

I agree when I list movies I go by US date.. but if I was a resident of another country and the film saw a wide release their first I would do the same (EG - Castle in the Sky came out in 84 in Japan, I have it listed as my #1 movie from 89 as thats when it hit the States)

* Flash Gordon
* Superman II (I'm putting this on my list because I saw it in 1980)
* The Final Countdown
* Private Benjamin
* Smokey and the Bandit 2
* Ffolkes (a 1979 release in Europe as "North Sea Hijack"but since we are doing US domestic release dates)
* Sea Wolves
* Rough Cut

Almost rans:
* Hopscotch
* Seems Like Old Times
* Any Which Way You Can
* Ordinary People
* Blue Lagoon
* Somewhere In Time

The list is for the year 1980 only (not the 80's)

Kind of a specific year don't you think?

1. The Shining
2. The Empire Strikes Back
3. Friday the 13th
4. Raging Bull
5. The Elephant Man
6. Airplane!
7. American Gigolo
8. The Blues Brothers
9. Terror Train
10. Superman II

Ouch!!! My head hurts...

That is a good list. I would have put Empire Strikes Back as number 1, and swapped places between Blues Brothers and Friday the 13th (haven't seen Terror Train), but otherwise on the money.

Apperently I haven't seen 10 films from 1980. But here's the ones I recall having seen in order:

1. The Shining
2. Raging Bull
3. The Final Countdown
4. Where the Buffalo Roam

I didn't include Superman II because that would give me less movies for my 1981 list.

For the record... the original post isn't clear. I thought it was for the entire 80's as well.

As for the person who said 'Only counts in US'... unfortunately that is why the world is the way it is.

The first time a movie released to a wide audience anywhere in the world is the official release date for that movie.

* I have not seen The Marriage of Maria Braun or Angie Vera though.
I'm too lazy to do all these lists but I'm probably closest to yours, so I'll just +1.

Although I have seen Maria Braun - great film. But not Angie Vera.
