I would like to see games take longer to beat than 8-10 hours. Online play is alot of fun but not everybody has internet or wants to play online all the time. Would be nice to see a FPS take a minimum of 20 hours to beat. Also like someone said, make harder difficulties more than more shots to kill or less to be killed. While I did not like FF13 being linear at first, I did end up really liking that game, alot. I really miss a good side action scroller game. Double Dragon, Bad Dudes were fun games. I have not seen a Contra game in a LONG time. I thought by now there would of been one. How about a space shooter like lifeforce, r-type? It would be great if they made games with gamers that like to play with a friend or 2 over and not have to play against each other but instead they could use teamwork to beat a game.

I don't want the shooter genre completely dead, but I do wish that some gamers could diversify their tastes a bit more. If people are only playing shooters, then less resources are being put into other genres. I dunno, it seems like there used to be more options available. I also think the move to shooters is resulting in companies hesitating to localize some of the great jRPGs out there. For Tales of Graces, it took alot of begging on facebook before they considered it. Then there is the situation with Xenoblade right now in America.

Personally, I suck at shooters and am okay with all the other genres. Unfortunately, these days, suck at shooters = suck at video games.

Ya, the death of RPG's really bothers me. I'm a lifelong RPG fan since playing the first Dragon Warrior game as a kid. I do hope they bring out Xenoblade Chronicles to the U.S.

Hard Corps: Uprising was released in March. And the Xbox still gets a few shooters here and there.

Hard Corps: Uprising is a Contra game developed by Arc System Works. The Guilty Gear and BlazBlue dudes. I didn't really care for the videos I saw of it so I didn't actually buy it myself. It's on PSN and Xbox Live. Two player online co-op.

Games that take out missions or objectives in the main game and release them as DLC (L.A. Noire, Assassin's Creed II).

I have Hard Corps: Uprising. It's a really good take on Contra, brought in with 2011 sensibilities. The crushing difficulty and 2D platforming goodness is there, with some new twists; you can spend points you earn in the game on upgrades which will make you stronger, which makes subsequent playthroughs easier (except in "Arcade" mode, which is much closer to the original).

Xenoblade is pretty awesome. I imported it. It's definitely worth getting it from a European shop and getting your Wii to play it if it's a US one.

I'm thinking more and more, though, you will have to know Japanese to play alot of the jRPGs. I know enough Japanese to know where to go in those games, but not understand the story. The story is one of the main components.

Square Enix does still put out some respectable games, but they pale in comparison to their earlier RPG's. It's gotten to the point that I don't want them re-making FF VII for fear they'll butcher it. Hopefully this trend ends one day.
I can tell you when it all fell apart - right when they merged. I was a much bigger Square fan back in the day (SNES - PS2).

Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Legend of Mana
SaGa Frontier
Final Fantasy (1-10)
Breath of Fire
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario RPG
Parasite Eve
Kingdom Hearts

^And this is just the list that I have played. There are other games with good name recognition that I never mentioned.

I'd be OK with Enix dieing, lol.

The most annoying thing about RPS's these days is how linear they've become. The last main franchise Final Fantasy I enjoyed was FF IX. Final Fantasy X was ok, but that was the point their games started getting very linear.

True, but what is funny is that the absolute best RPGs this gen have been Oblivion and Fall Out. Love em, and they certainly aren't linear. Can't wait for Skyrim and Diablo 3!

I enjoy games like Elder Scrolls and Fallout very much. But I've always been more of an JRPG style RPG gamer. The actions RPG's are still as good as they've ever been these days IMO. It's the old-school turn based RPG's that have suffered badly.

I think "best" is one of those "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" things. I found Fallout 3 to be a bit TOO freeform and unstructured. Oblivion was fun, but the Oblivion Gate levels were painful and terrible.

I actually think RPGs I've enjoyed the most in this generation have been Dragon Age: Origins and Persona 4 (does this even count, being on the PS2 though releasing in the current gen time frame?).

Turn-based RPGs have pretty much gone completely by the wayside; I don't expect them to remain anywhere close to the mainstream much longer, though I like them well enough.

I also have to give a shoutout to Final Fantasy 11 Online, which while it isn't generally considered a "mainline" FF title due to being an MMORPG, actually features some of the best storytelling in the entire series. It does require a quite huge investment of time and money (subscription) to unlock all the story content, however.

I totally agree with the guy above. If consumers do not diversify their tastes in games except shooters it will not allow much for AAA games in other genres.

Vehicular battle games are extinct pretty much. I would like to see more 3D adventure action games.

  • Selling what used to be push-button cheats as DLC
  • Selling the same avatars you get for free on the web
  • Reviving classic IP's (Fallout, X-Com, Syndicate) as first person games that play nothing like the originals
  • Capcom's low quality standard, outsourcing full games overseas madness and half-hearted sequels still stuck in the PS2 era
  • Complicated pre-order bonuses

20 hours is Bioshock/RE4 territory. RPG/open-world sandbox padding doesn't suit every FPS or TPS. RE4 wasn't so heavy on the RPG stuff but it had a much longer than typical development period with a big dev team. Intentionally repeating that is risky business.

Oooo, good one. I forgot about Dragon Age. That was a fun play through.

And yes, the turn based format really has basically gone the way of the DoDo. Too bad as I like that style, but hey, I'm all for different iterations just as long as we get good stories and great game play. (and that good RPG crack element, lol)

Default Trends that need to stop........

1 - Intentionally not completing games and selling "extras" as DLC.
2 - Making XBOX 360 games
3 - Only having co-op or multiplayer on-line. What ever happened to local play?
4 - Overall, games are too easy when compared to games in the past.
