The confusion/miscommunication here stems from the fact that a lot of people think that film grain means a bad transfer, and that's not the case at all.
If someone gives a movie a lower PQ rating because of the presence of grain, then they're kinda misinformed. Quote:

Can anyone pass me a proof of purchase picture of SPR for $19.99 @ Costco or even an add flyer etc......anything. I was told that is all I need.
I need it to price match @ BB, since they have it for $27.99, (I swapped Avatar for SPR) when I realized that maybe I should just wait for the Avatar with all the extra features.... Can anyone help me out PLEASE, Thanks again |

im not saying film grain = bad transfer. 300 has TONS of grain and ppl give it rave reviews. personally i just dont like too much of it is all. still think transfer was good, but would have gotten higher marks from me if it has some grain, but not too much and i tend to lean towards the clean look of films like transformers, the international etc. i think at the end it comes down to each is own.

Sorry, I didn't mean to direct that at you, it was just a general comment with regards to the SPR PQ...
I'm not a huge fan of grain either, just trying to point out that it doesn't automatically equate to a bad transfer... and again, this isn't directed at you - a lot of people (including someone earlier on in this thread I think) said something to the effect of "how can you say it has good PQ? look at all that grain!" ![]() Quote:

That is like o enjoying pops, hisses, and cracks from records and cassettes on your audio system o watching regular cable on your HDTV o running Windows 3.1 on your current laptop o playing PAC-MAN on your PS3 Most television shows from the 80s were recorded in SD only. If they were to be re-released on BD, would these people re-buy the same shows and marvel at how 'warm' and 'soft' the pictures were from the 80s sitcoms? |

I think grain is something we all have to live with and accept. Until they stop using film to make films. Which is starting to happen with digital cameras. But some film makers go to the trouble a adding back grain to a digital film (For example in 300 or Superman Returns) to give it a film like quality. Remember for MOST filmmakers, GRAIN does not equal bad, it equals good. They want you to see the film that way. Last edited by tilallr1; 05-06-2010 at 07:51 PM. |

My comments were mostly directed at GreatGreg and his comment: Quote:
Again, I have no problem with someones disliking of grain. I just love SPR, and this is how it's supposed to look. This is how it looked in theaters, this is how it looked on VHS, DVD and on TV. The Blu-ray is perfect. Honestly, after watching the whole film yesterday, it easily has some the best detail I've ever seen. Just watch the whole chapter of when Vin Diesel gets sniped and especially the last battle at Ramelle. Whether you're into grain or not, I don't know how anyone can say it looks average. |

i have to disagree with you here. i think some grain is important to preserve the cinematic feel to movies according to how the director intended them to be seen. i think ppl look for it bcuz if it gets artificially removed then the image has been distorted and you are not watching the film as the director intended. just for my taste i dont mind some of it but when it begins to overwhelm the image with thick clouds that is where i start to think it it should be eased up. however i think ppl have said all thats needed to on this issue and dont feel like beating it to death. |

went to burlington costco tonight, picked up gladiator and braveheart (they had lots of both). They didn't have any SPR, and only one copy of Indiana Jones left, but I haven't even watched it again since picking up a used dvd. They had 2 Rocky Bolboa @ 14.99. They did have others there, Dusk til Dawn, Forrest Gump, and can't remember the others.
For what it's worth - both Gladiator / Braveheart have rebates available... need to cut out the proof of purchase on both bluray and original dvd - $10 rebate... I wasn't going to, but they came with slipcovers so it wouldn't be as noticeable, and 20 bucks is still 20 bucks and could get me a couple more blu's... |

anyone notice if Costco got any Doctor Zhivago's in this week, and if so what the price was?
looking for a better deal then the $29.99 that most have on right now - I hear this movie is definitely worth a blind buy |

No luck with Zhivago last Tuesday. They had the new DVD for 18.99, but no Blu-ray. I even looked in their un-opened boxes that were below the BD stand hoping they merely hadn't opened it yet. No luck. From what I gather, they didn't get them in. I'll probably just wait a month and pick it up used or on sale. If not I think you can already get WB's UK BD (Which is identical, sans book cover) for under 15.

well, assuming they don't actually tell you "never price match with costco"
if someone came saying costco has whatever for $10 cheaper than you do, I would match it for them, I wouldn't make up some "policy" about how costco requires a membership and refuse to help them unless strictly told to do so by my boss |
