Default Does anyone leave their Blu-rays SEALED?

Just curious, do some of you leave your blu rays sealed? Perhaps because you like the packaging? Or maybe you plan to resell in the future? Do you buy more than 1 copy to leave 1 sealed??

I know sometimes I can be a sucker for packaging, and for the right price buy more than 1 copy to leave 1 sealed.

Blu-ray aren't comics books or action figures that will be valuable collectors items. Unless somethign goes out of print, but still has a good deal of demand, it is guaranteed to be worth less than you paid within a few months. If you buy a Blu-ray and don't watch it, it will lose value and you'll have nothing to show for it.

Exactly! (and heck, these days even comics and collectible figures are a guessing game as to whether they will go up in value or not).

While I can get particular about my movie packaging and will sometimes go out of my way to get a preferred version if more than 1 version exists and the version that I prefer is a bit more difficult to obtain, I am still ultimately buying it for the movie (or tv show), itself.

Sure, there have been occasions where I have bought a Blu-Ray or DVD movie or TV box set that I didn't get around to watching right away, and in some cases (though few and far between... I am typically in the habbit of opening most things I buy right when I get them) I just never got around to opening the shrink wrap right away for one reason or another. Maybe I set it down, intending to open it in the near future, and then just kind of forgot that I hadn't opened it. Or something like that.

But no, I'm not buying Blu-Rays and keeping them wrapped up for collectible value or anything.

OMG NOOOO!

Obsolete video formats will never become collectible.

Well, maybe some people will collect the "old tech" of today in 10 years or so, but no one is going to be paying big bucks for 1080p video once 4K video hits.

The only reason records are worth more is because they actually sound better than CDs. 8 tracks, cassettes sound worse and while people do collect them, they aren't paying more than $2-3 for a single cassette

Same with VHS, VCD... Laserdiscs are worth a bit more because of how close the quality comes to DVD and the uncompressed audio...

I agree that there's no point investing a fortune in blurays 1080p but what would you say when 4k hits mainstream? Don't build a collection because 8k is coming soon. I see 4k really being big either late next year or late 2013, since lg has there 4k rolling out this year. I won't stop buying blurays 1080p, I'll just get new release 4k

Wow, what an optimist! BDs have been out since 2006 and we still have problems getting decent transfers/remasters of many films. We still haven't transitioned from DVD (95% of U.S. households own a DVD player but Blu-ray is still around 20%...half of which are PS3s). The related problem is display technology since people have just upgraded to flat screen, 720/1080p sets. Most the people I know, even film lovers, have trouble seeing the difference between upscaled DVD and BD on their 42-47" screens. Studios are not going to waste money on expensive 4k masters in the near future just to try and sell them to 2% of the population. At best, we may see a format aimed at the HT crowd that will have very limited penetration much like Laser Disc did, but even that is likely years away, especially in this economy and the risk-adverse environment that comes with it.

Consider that it took 9 years from the introduction of DVD Video for BD Video to be released.

Finally, bear in mind that VOD/streaming is growing at a rate that exceeds BD penetration and it represents a strong trend away from physical media that will certainly not prevent affordable 4k from making its way to HT, but will inevitably delay it if only from the impact on BD sales that will make studios leery of investing in next-gen platforms.

Just the thought of 4K makes me angry. Backlisting 150 Blu-rays will not be fun at all.

Missed my point entirely.

The value of blu-rays will not increase once 4K hits.

It's not like a Beatles record or an old Batman comic where the longer it sits the more it's worth.

Buy a blu-ray now for $30, if you were to turn around and sell it, you would probably only get $20-25. If it goes OOP fast, maybe in a year or two you could get $30-35.

Once 4K comes out and the movie is re-released, maybe $5 for the blu-ray.

I do collect movies, but I do not collect just to collect. I collect movies I like and watch them

I only unwrap them when I want to watch. Those not watching so soon (as I ordered a lots) will have to wait. And those with the locked region will not be open until I manage to get a region free player.

Honestly, whenever I buy a movie at a store (which is rare these days) and I always open it when I get back to my car to make sure the correct discs are there and unscratched. This is especially the case with boxsets that have multiple discs or odd packaging.
