Me too!

EDIT: Anyone notice that if you log into your account on Deep Discount, your order still reads as "open". I'm assuming that the paperwork hasn't caught up yet?

Yeah, I order from them a lot and their order status is alway screwed up. I've cancelled an order and it will say Open a month after the fact. I usually get pretty quick shipping and can cancel easily, the order status info is just fubar'd ...

That's just a Deep Discount thing; they can sometimes stay that way for months. I have an order from January they cancelled that still shows as open.

Edit: Honest John beat me to it

I just picked this up via the Best Buy Criterion sale and boy, I'm confused by the love of the picture quality of this. I'd say that 75% of it looks fantastic, but that 25% percent... wow... some of it looks like VHS. The scenes in the desert at night were particularly bad with black crush and banding. I kept trying to adjust my tv settings to no avail.

Recently watched The Last Temptation of Christ for the first time in many years. Well-done & extremely poignant film, and IMHO it came out of Scorcese's forgotten decade - i.e., the '80's...Other than Raging Bull (1980, though was probably filmed in '79), his '80's films are largely underrated these days, i.e. TKOC (1983), After Hours (1985), The Color of Money (1986), and LTOC (1988).

In any case, I remember the extreme controversy that this film experienced when it was first released in '88, though after re-watching the film & paying a lot more attention this time I really don't understand why the movie was such an issue for so many people.

First: It was based on a fiction novel which didn't make any factual claims in any way, shape, or form.

Second: I don't consider myself extremely religious but even if I was, I don't see the film as being critical or slamming religion or Christ - far from it. If you watch the movie carefully
[Show spoiler]Christ never actually gives in to his temptation to get married, have a family, etc. At the end of the film as he's dying he is just imagining what would have happened had he been tempted to live this type of life, but he doesn't actually do this. I'm not sure if all those who saw or heard about the film truly understood what was going on in the end, i.e. the scene when the small child (who represented the devil, I think) took him down from the cross & he ended up getting married, etc. only happened in his mind....

That's because the people and religious groups protesting the film hadn't actually seen it. They were just going by what they heard happened out of context.

The film is so moving, powerful, and emotionally potent that I can't believe anyone would call this satanic or sacrilegious. It kinda scares me.

Reminds me of what Mary Whitehouse said about video nasties: "I actually don't need to see visually what I know is in that film." Just holier-than-thou types *****ing and whining about things they knew nothing abut.

I have never understood the controversy surrounding the film...

Scorsese bases his film on a novel that explores what if. It is not saying anything else but envisioning a different life for Jesus had he not decided to die on the cross.

I think that for a lot of christians, the ending of Jesus' life is resurrection. Without it, well...

I think what got the Catholics all up in arms was the fact that the film (and book) suggested that Jesus was susceptible to human desires...whether he acted on them or not.

Personally, I found that this "flaw" made him that much more relatable, and also made his final sacrifice that much more powerful.

Scorsese's best film after Taxi Driver IMHO.
