I'm with you. I thought the film was decent, and I was holding out to only buy an extended but I don't think the individual Hobbit films really need to be extended any more.
If I can land a good price on 3D I might grab it. I will at some point get the extended. Depending on which cut I like better, I'll sell one copy. |

The temp artwork was put up before the split into three films (the scene was originally in An Unexpected Journey) and just never changed. It's possible that it's not even from the studio.

Like many here, I'm game for both the theatrical and the extended. People tend to think that adding the extra footage does not make any difference, thus resulting in what they may called just a bloated version of the original, but what I found quite true with the LOTR EEs is that once the extra footage was added in, the films went to a whole new level. That reasoning, in my opinion, would warrant buying both since you would basically have two, subtly different movies. Now I'm not going to debate whether having The Hobbit within three films is extension enough already, for everyone has the right to feel either way, but I welcome both since I love Peter Jackson's work with this material. Bottom line in this case, I don't feel less is more.

Although I got my pre-order for the 3D in before it became unavailable, I decided to go ahead an pre-order the regular blu-ray just in case they don't honor the 3D pre-order. My son is looking forward to Saturday March 23 as that will be his first chance to see it. He's 10 and had to read the book first. Now he is reading through LOTR so he can watch that triology upon our return to Papua New Guinea in the summer. In the past two weeks he has finished Fellowship and Two Towers and has made a good start into Return of the King.

I know this isn't news, but it kills me is that they will release the theatrical version in March only to then release an extended version in December. I get the point is to make more money. I guess I'd like to know what the plans are for the extended version with 3D, the number of discs and extras. I know I don't have to buy this movie twice, but since I have the movie disease I may just end up doing so.

Plus they'll also serve as hype for the next film in the series that opens shortly after the release. Does make you wonder how they'll handle the Extended Cut of Smaug though. Since Hobbit 3 opens in Mid-2015 instead. |

The LOTR EE actually added something to the movie story-wise. I mean The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey was already over-stuffed and poorly paced as it was. I still loved it but I cannot see how much they can possibly add that will help the film. I think the theatrical cut will do for me. If the EE is truly worth it and somehow (and I don't see how it could) fixes the pacing and bloated running-time of the theatrical cut, I'll just trade in my TC and get the EE but for now I'll definitely get the theatrical cut because I'm pretty sure that will end up being the most watchable cut of the movie without it being over-stuffed.
