Okay, that makes sense. That situation is probably true of nearly all native 3D live features, even the "good" ones.

Quote:
Basically Dreamworks animated movies are a great example of 3D that uses good safe IA filmmaking so that 3D volume looks good on TVs and amazing on cinema screens while maintaining volume across a wide range of screen sizes.
I was going through a few trailers earlier today, pausing and studying the roundness in each shot at different viewing distances and was very impressed by the roundness level achieved in every single frame from The Croods and other DreamWorks films at all distances. Comparing the Gatsby trailer, maybe 30-40% of shots achieved that level, mainly ones from the big story "impact moments." The Hobbit was there in maybe 50-60% of shots. Pixar looked too flat unless I was about 10ft away or further, and looks great in theaters. Sammy looked 1:1 from about 6ft, and some shots looked overblown from about 10ft.

Quote:
My point is is that just because a shot looks flat doesn't mean it can be improved by sitting far away if the IA was low or if the subjects were too far out of the IA's sweet spots and they used toe in.
Point taken. I was probably putting too much stock in the roundness formula's ability to create orthoplastic 3D.

Quote:
You can fit more people in the cinema sitting at the front. The 3D was an afterthought because the directors didn't want to change lenses and compositions.

Here is a good chart that describes what I'm talking about. There are other variations like composition and lens choice.

[Show spoiler]
So you think they stunted the creative use of negative parallax to go easier on people sitting in the front row? (EDIT - Now I realize you probably meant that it's difficult for people in the front row to converge on wide separation on a cinema screen.) The funny thing about that, if true, is I can't even remember the last time that I went to a 3D showing that was so full that people were sitting in the front.

But I like this chart. And the part about not bothering to change lenses and IA settings throughout different shots in a given sequence makes sense. I can see how some directors couldn't be bothered to give the stereographers the time it takes to do that. I remember that being really evident for me in one of the Resident Evil movies during an action scene with Alice, composed of two alternating viewpoints, one close and one further away. The close view looked nice and round, while the further view was a cardboard cutout. It looked like they used the same stereo settings for both shots and edited it together. That's probably a frequent occurrence in most live movies, and I just don't pick up on it all the time.

I wouldn't call the 3D a total afterthought though as there was evidence of planning and story-boarding for 3D in Jack and Oz, using it to enhance story moments, which is what I miss so much watching the comic book conversions.

Actually, I think what they did in that particular RE shot was keep the amount of parallax exactly the same, so the parallax would edit together seamlessly, while allowing the roundness vary. I thought it would have looked better had it been the opposite.

Finally watched it last night and had a blast with the story and 3D!

The story keeps you interested throughout. The CGI giants were not the most realistic, definitely no where close to Hobbit's giants, but fun to watch.

The 3D is mostly good especially for live action, but it seemed a little flat when it came to the CG giants. There is very palpable contrast when they switch between live action to CG. Too bad, they could have easily pushed it a bit more (may be I am spoiled with Sammy 2 ).

Lets say I enjoyed Hansel & Gretel a bit more as gore had no bounds there as opposed to Jack which is a family movie (much better than Oz), so everything is mellowed down!

Will do mate. Yes it had a slip, but it was one of those foil ones. Not a huge fan of those.

Sorry to hear that you guys in the UK get a foil slip. Doesn't sound very durable. Can you post a pick when you get a chance? Never seen one I don't think, so i'm curious.

I blind bought the movie last Friday, and watched it. Excellent blind buy imo. Lots of fun, and strong 3D. Hope you enjoy ur copy

I'll try and get some pics up soon. I watched the movie tonight and loved it! Amazing scale and great 3D. A good, fun adventure movie. Some of the giant FX were a little too CG but other than that the FX overall were wonderful.

Although i thoroghly enjoyed JTGK, Was re-watching Puss in boots which had an elaborate scene with bean stalk growing which I have to say is orders of magnitude better in 3D quality....perhaps there it happens in daylight and because its from king of 3d - DREAMWORKS!

Yes i was also thinking of the beanstalk scene in Puss in Boots whilst watching some of the beanstalk stuff in Jack The Giant Slayer. I thought Jack was a far superior movie however.

Random question, does anyone know if the 3D case is same size as the standard 2D case? I'd rather have the lenticular cover, but don't want it if its not the same size. (Also, not sure if this is the right thread to ask this)

The lenticular BD 3D slip-cover fits over a standard HD-slim case that has inside an extra center 2-disc holder. The outer case is the same size as a standard HD-slim 2D case.

No activity in quite some time here...

Rewatched yesterday, such a fun fantasy adventure. If the CG work had a bit more polish it would be perfect. Bryan Singer always seems to have crappy CG in his movies though which is odd considering the budgets he'd usually given.

The 3D is damn good throughout, yes it could be stronger but this is a solid native presentation.
