Warner Bros Jack the Giant Slayer (2013) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

Jack the Giant Slayer 3D Blu-ray

Went to the first 3D showing today and was very impressed.

This is what I would call a seriously oriented, fairytale coming to life with an air of believability. Found it very entertaining. The very young could be frightened with the thought of being eaten.

Native 3D is used generously with many realistic moments. Think the 3D cinematography also takes advantage of increasing camera intra-axial distances for realistic stereo effects that help creat a miniaturization look for towns people when Giants are present.

There were only around 25 people at the first 3D version show, but I hope the word gets out that it is entertaining for a very successful theatrical run.

Will definitely purchase the BD 3D when it becomes available.

Paul

Interesting article on the shooting of the movie.

Critics are split on this one 50% each on Rotten Tomatoes with over 100 reviews making that up. I am looking forward to seeing it when it opens in my country. Saw the trailer before Hansel and Gretel and the 3D looks really good.

Hi everyone, new here, but have lurked for a while.

I went to see this today at first showing as well. There were only about 10 people in the audience, which is fine by me!!!

I can't speak to any technical aspects, but I don't think the 3D was all that great. There were a lot of segments of the movie where it was just people talking and there, the depth was adequate, but nothing more than average. But those really aren't the kind of scenes where 3D can shine. There were some scenes where the 3D was integral to the story telling, but they were a smaller part of the movie than I would have liked. These parts were great though. Overall for the $180 million budget, I wanted to be wowed. I wasn't. I would have liked to have seen more elements of the story where the 3D could have been utilized and allowed to stand out.

The previews were numerous though, and there are a lot of good looking 3D movies coming this spring and summer:

Epic - awesome preview can't wait for this one
the Croods - looks pretty good, not interested in the storyline though
GI Joe - lots of action, pretty good looking 3D
Man of Steel - looks great, lots of action, good story
Despicable Me - awesome preview with cool pop outs (LOVE that)
Oz the Great and Powerful - awesome preview can't wait for this one
Jurassic Park - looks pretty good for a remix (is that the proper technical term?) LOL

Anyway, just my $.02.

Other sources are saying $195 million. Yikes! I presumed the budget was much smaller from seeing the trailers like 60-70 million.

Not surprised considering the amount of special-effect work and planning that obviously was a passion for the scope of the production. It excited my inner child.

Saw it Friday night with two others. We all liked it and I found the 3D to be good. I'll be picking up the 3D BD when available.

Maybe that really lousy Academy Awards show turned off America to the movies. “It’s a bad weekend across the board,” a studio exec warns while one more describes, ”Another soft weekend.” Total filmgoing of $100M looks to be a whopping -37% less than last year with every single new release underperforming tracking by a wide margin.

I still can't imagine what movie producer ever thought green lighting a $180 million version of Jack & the frickin Beanstalk was EVER a good idea.

I saw it this morning in Imax screen. I have to agree with Paul's review. The movie is fun to watch and the 3D is pretty amazing. My daughter and I totally enjoy the movie. Hope it does well and will be an instant buy for me when it comes out in blu.

The conversion argument just doesn't wash anymore as the conversions of the last 2 years have been far superior to anything filmed natively.

People just don't give a shit about Jack and the Beanstalk.....

Jack the Giant Slayer isn't a conversion. (But maybe the original comment was a joke?)

Totally disagree. There just hasn't been much phenomenal, native live-action content with a good story.

I meant the actual 3D. Apart from Hugo, the conversions whooped everything else that was shot natively.

I have high expectations for Jack the Giant Slayer and several others that I haven't seen yet, but at the very least, I'd rate the 3D in these films above Titanic, The Avengers, Top Gun, MIB III, John Carter, etc.

Hugo
Flying Swords of Dragon Gate
Prometheus
Resident Evil: Retribution
Journey 2: The Mysterious Island
Pina
Drive Angry
Rescue
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
The Three Musketeers
Final Destination 5
Sanctum
Life of Pi
Plus almost every animated film

Conversions will never be as satisfying because the director can't get 3D feedback of what he's shooting while he's on set. Not to mention the current technical challenge of converting things like hair. Maybe it's just me over-analyzing things, but there are too many little quirks in converted depth that look wrong. Titanic is the only one I've seen that's come close to looking like native depth, and it wasn't even originally story-boarded to use 3D dramatically.

I haven't seen Pi or Hobbit yet in 3D, but Prometheus was very weak 3D I thought. I would say Titanic, Avengers, Abe Lincoln, Wrath, Top Gun (apart from the dire PQ) and many others have been just as good if not better than anything I have seen that was native. They were certainly better than Spiderman or Prometheus.

I don't even count animated films as native as they are all entirely computer generated and not 'filmed' as such. TBH I don't really enjoy live action 3D half as much as animated films as I don't ever think they really 'look right' or that convincing in 3D.

We'll agree to disagree then. Recent conversions are more of a 3.5/5 to 4/5 (Titanic) for me, which is about the same level of enjoyment I get from the 3D in TASM, Dredd, and other stuff with poor live 3D and strong animated 3D.

The only 3D movies that have looked like real life from 6-8 ft away on my TV have been IMAX documentaries with really strong parallax and maybe parts of Journey to the Center of the Earth, Sanctum, Hugo, and a couple of others. It's a different story if I'm sitting in a theater though, especially IMAX.
