A couple thoughts on the packaging. First, the box is fairly attractive, but I dunno, I can't help but think it should have just been shaped like the TARDIS. Shouldn't that just be a given if they need to make a big box for Doctor Who blu-rays?

Also, While the remote seems kinda cool, I really would just rather save money and skip the thing. Really, we're not looking to buy toys here, we're looking to buy the series. How much does that remote jack up the price when we don't even need it? Just another way to get more money for the set.

Personally I'll be upset if I go ahead and buy this just to learn that eventually 1-4 will all end up on retail shelves like BJ's for $20 per season. If I knew that day was coming, I would not buy this. I just want the discs, not the fluff. But you know you can't ever tell what the studios are going to do - I know it was mentioned that 1-4 might be sold separately next year but are we sure about that?

Yeah... I could care less about the screwdriver. Its cool, but I'd rather the set be cheaper without it. I may just put it on ebay.

More packaging thoughts - I like that the seasons are in individual retail cases as if they were sold separately - this is how it should be done.

On the other hand, I hate that they are being stored horizontally. Discs should be stored vertically. Everybody knows this yet studios still put out fancy sets with the discs stored horizontally. If I were to get this I would keep the sets stored vertically outside the box.

A poster called Steve Manfred wrote the following two posts:

Series 1-4 are being upscaled for it. They should also be available as individual seasons.

It's not coming out this year though. This is for 2014.

Another poster makes an interesting argument as to why the blu rays should look better than an upscaled version of the region 1 DVDs, no matter how good your blu ray players' upscaling is:

Besides, uber-fans like me, who are most likely to buy this set, probably already have the screwdriver if they want it. I know I do.

I can't imagine using it to control my home theater every day. Fun for cosplay or "make-believe," though. I'd rather they include this one, which isn't out yet.

My two problems with it are that it only can only store up to three devices, who only has three devices connected to their tv, and that it won't work on the PS3 (but then again no remote does).

Ah, sounds ok. I have the real-metal-screwdriver one, which I guess is the most 'practical' of the bunch.

Can't wait to see what they look like!
As someone else posted already, Steve Manfred has already stated that the first few seasons are upconverts (which they would have to be, as they were shot in standard video), so that statement about them being "newly remastered versions at full 1080p resolution" is very misleading.

Now, with that said, as much as I really don't want to support a fully upconverted release, if the results look quite good, and they do include some new worthwhile extras (such as the full episodes of Doctor Who Confidential), then maybe, I'd consider getting the individual releases of Seasons 1 through 4 (as I stated before, I have no interest in the remote, and I've already got the Specials, and Seasons 5 and 6 on Blu-Ray, along with Season 5 on DVD, which I only have since it was autographed by Matt Smith, Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill).

The problem with having a UK set is that even though it may be region free there's a strong chance it would be 50i making it unplayable by standard US players. If that isnt the case I would most likely import it. I know some of the bbc shows have done this in the past.

September 24 seems like an appropriate date, since that is also when S7 is released.

The Doctor Who Comic-Con panel is tomorrow, so I wouldn't be surprised if more details are revealed then.

For those worried that seasons 1 to 4 might not be sold separately, I believe that the strongest indication of that is simply the fact that we can already see the individual cases in the box set. If you notice, the spines are different, and so far every show I've seen on Blu-ray, when they put multiple cases in a box set the sleeves always follow the same pattern.
