Given Paramount's extortionate prices and strange treatment of Anchorman 2, I'd be inclined to disagree with you.

It's a recent film, they'd have to be going out of their way to screw it up. Maybe it will look slightly worse than the US release (because of more bonus features and additional German and Castilian Spanish DTS Digital Surround tracks), but I doubt it will be much worse.

And Universal appear to have been nice enough to give us the Best Buy features as standard, and based on the Scandinavian cover it will be region free. So even if it looks slightly worse there are advantages to the UK release.

I would never want to trade off an inferior picture quality for a few extras you can prob find online anyway for free.

I very much doubt there'll be a noticeable difference, there may (or may not) be a lower bitrate, but I doubt there's going to be a huge difference between the two, Universal aren't incompetent. They may screw us over in favour of the US, but many of their releases are still excellent.

And can I suggest if you're that bothered you just order the US release, it has been going cheaply...

I bought it, because I found it for a tenner.

Had the UK steelbook pre-ordered, but cancelled that.
Not really concerned about the extras.

Sounds like the HMV exclusive will have artcards (much like Nymphomaniac). Whether the slip design is the same we will have to see, but I'm guessing it will be (the regular one has the dodgy new purple 'curl' on the top horizontal banner) and will just have an 'HMV Exclusive Art Cards' sticker or something. I could be wrong though - Nymphomaniac came with alternate art on the slipcover so this might do too. Will likely find out in a couple of days when they arrive (between now and Friday is my guess).

I believe the Exclusive version will have a yellow slipcover design similar to the steelbook (not sure about the purple UV banner tho). Regular release also has a slip- different design tho.
The HMV's here in Dublin have all 3 versions at the stores now to go out on sale Friday.
If anyone happens to be near a store they can ask to have a look at them (of course they can't sell it yet)...I'd love to know what the steelbook looks like and if anyone can confirm if it has a full, high glossy finish or not.

I'm sticking with the steelbook purely so I don't have to see that ridiculous purple banner once I remove the packaging. I haven't had to buy any blu ray with the banner on yet, and I'm hoping people come to their senses and remove it before it's on something I actually want. Does no one seem to realise that Blue and Purple should not go together? It's a hideous combination and really throws off the rest of the artwork!

Wait, what did Paramount do to give Anchorman 2 a weird treatment?

The Americans get the US PG-13 theatrical cut, an unrated extended version of the main film and the "supersize" version. We get a longer international cut (which is a similar length to the US PG-13, but slightly ruder) and the "supersize" version. Other territories got a shorter international cut, and neither the unrated nor "supersize" versions...

In order words, Paramount secretly dispersed at least 5 different versions of the film, and then screwed most territories out of the longer unrated cut (and a fair number of territories were screwed out of the "supersize" cut as well, but the UK wasn't, so I can't really complain)...

So it seems like they went through more trouble just ****ing people over instead of just giving everyone all the cuts.

Basically yes, but I can sort of see why they did it. In many European countries they'd have to pay to classify every cut. If there are 5 different cuts, that's going to cost a lot of money to get every single one classified.

But why they didn't just only put the unrated cut and the "supersize" version on the international releases is beyond me.

In the UK they'd have to have the unrated version classified so that may go back to the original point you made. And we should get the UK theatrical version on our BD - zero reason why what we saw in cinemas shouldn't be the version we end up with at home. So if Paramount were only going to give us two versions on our BD then they gave us the correct two.

I can think of a very good reason why we shouldn't end up with the UK theatrical cut on our BD, if Paramount are only willing to classify two cuts, we lost the longer unrated cut in favour of a shorter censored version. To put it bluntly I couldn't give a shit if it isn't the version people saw in cinemas, use it as a marketing point, just avoid giving us a censored version if at all possible.

Although to be honest, I don't see why they didn't just use the unrated cut in the first place if they were going to create a different cut for international territories, seeing as I doubt there's anything that would take it out of the 15 classification.

I can pretty much guarantee it'll just be a free copy of the paperback if you buy the blu-ray or something. Shoot me if I'm wrong!

I made the same decision. Cancelled my pre-order of the HMV exclusive for this reason alone. That banner has put me off pre-ordering copies of some films (like The Grand Budapest Hotel) which I would normally snap up on day one. I'll just wait for them to re-release the same film without the UV code and it'll likely be cheaper too. I wonder if some of the studios know things like this put off film collectors? It stands out even more on the HMV exclusive slip for The Wolf Of Wall Street - blue and purple against the bright yellow looks a little bit messy...hence why I'm paying extra and going with the steelbook!

I've made a point of it to our WB rep that pretty much everyone that collects Blu-ray pretty much universally hates the new UV banner and it's caused some to actually not buy the release and/or imported a version that doesn't have it.

He fed that back to the higher-up's but I honestly doubt they will even care unless they see a big enough drop in overall sales across the board.
