I don't think this has ever happened to me. Closest I can think of is when the Lucasfilm/Disney sale was announced and Episode VII became a real thing, I wasn't too happy about it, but I caved in those last few months as the hype built up and ended up seeing it twice on opening day, so...

The Shawshank Redemption and Deadpool believe it or not! It took me 10 years to watch Shawshank because for some reason it just didn't look interesting to me then I finally gave in from pressure from a friend and it was one of the best movie viewing experiences of my life. Its one of my top 20 favorite films now. With Deadpool I thought it looked like one of the worst movies ever made from the trailer and then I watched it and it
completely rocks and I can't wait for the sequel.

how dumb. now if if we're talking "snakes on a plane" and there were no snakes on a plane, then that would be an easy lawsuit victory

None. It's always pissed me off when people talk sh*t about something they haven't seen and refuse to watch it out of prejudice. I've always found it to be a pretty dumb attitude.

It's one thing to pass on a film because you think you're going to dislike it. It's another to go on all day about how awful it is when you haven't seen it. Especially when it's a film that's garnered positive response from the majority of people.

Nothing. Films that I trash before watching them do not get seen by me or I was right to hate on them when I did watch them (Frozen being one of the films). I have plenty of films that I hated when I first watched them but loved upon a rewatch though.

Not HATED, but I did not see The Boxtrolls until about a month or two ago, due to not being wowed by Laika's previous works (Coraline isn't bad but it's just not my cup of tea, and I like Paranorman but it's not a favorite). I checked it out on Netflix, and I'm in the minority opinion that it is "better than Coraline and (maybe to a lesser extent) Paranorman". My enjoyment also opened up my mind to see Kubo in theaters, as I was going to wait to watch it on Netflix for the same reason, and I adored that film.

As a huge Star Trek fan I was did not want a reboot. But when I saw Star Trek 2009 I loved it.

Ant-Man

Thought the concept for Ant-Man was too goofy and thought it would be a lesser Marvel film. When I saw it though, I felt it was a solid comedic heist movie

Same here. With all the hype that was going on in this forum when Ant Man was released, I said to my self why would I want to watch something about an AntMan? I ended up buying the steelbook, and once I watched the movie, I was pleasantly surprised on how good it was. It turns out that it was one of my best blind buys ever.

Hate a movie before seeing it? None. There's no point in that. I can be dissatisfied with casting choices and things like that, but actually hating it, no. The other way around, that's possible for me. When all of the promotion already me fall in love with a movie, but I ended up disliking it. Or at least very disappointed.

I wouldn't quite go as far as "hate" but I was incredibly nonplussed by the hype around the LotR films on their cinematic release. Never watched them. A friend lent me the DVD boxset a few years later, and I begrudgingly decided to give them a watch. By the time Gandalf uttered "Fly, you fools!" I was hooked for good. Never looked back.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to hate a movie before seeing it.

That being said, I have gone into movies expecting the worst, and came out pleasantly surprised.

A recent example would be Pay the Ghost. Now, there are a lot of Nic Cage DTV films now, and many of them get low ratings, but I largely ignore those because the people are dead wrong. There's a floor to how bad a crime film can be, and it's really not that low of a floor. However, some of his DTV films stray from the formula of "Nic Cage and a somewhat less famous actor or two fire a few guns." That's trouble. Outcast, for instance, is pretty awful. Now, Pay the Ghost is a horror film, so there certainly is potential for abysmal-ness. Plus, it's RT score is in the single digits. So I went in, because watching every Nic Cage film is a thing I will contiunue to do, with a degree of apprehension. Little did I expect the thrilling, tight little film I got! It is honestly a very solid film, with a cool mythology, and certainly one of the best horror films of the last while.

Another would be Knight of Cups. I'm no Malick fan but I do respect some of his cinematographic choices and there's something to be said for seeing the "canon" of great films, so I do watch his films by and large. But I don't expect much. And this one was getting the worst reviews of his career, and also even Malick fans didn't like it in some cases. Yet it turned out to be arguably his best film! Certainly his best since The Thin Red Line.

It seems absolutely moronic to actulally "hate" a movie without having seen it first.

I avoided Hotel Transylvania for years, due to the Sandler Taint, but when I finally got around to watching it early last year, I found it to be surprisingly charming and funny.

Still holds as true now as it did when I originally typed it.

In fairness, the OP qualifies it as "preconceived notions about movies" (pretty much the same as your "seems to be something you wouldn't enjoy" language)

I think he just used colorful language in the title to get people posting - and it worked

Can't say this has happened to me. Any movie i hated the idea of and then watched it, i still hated it. If a movie doesn't seem appealing i tend to not watch it. Most movies where i don't have any expectations is why i get pleasantly surprised.

Karate Kid (remake)

The trailer looked HORRIBLE to me. Plus I was a huge fan of the original and thus was completely against a remake. I ended up renting it and had enormously low expectations. But I was STUNNED. It was actually a decent film.

Really? I just thought it was very dull movie which was just a longer version of a very dull trailer.

Jackie Chan was the best thing about it and even he phoned it in.
