David Gilmour without Roger Waters is like a Rum and Coke without the Rum.

It tastes good...but it's just sugar water.

David Gilmour isn't really the greatest technical player or may not have blindingly fast chops, but he has such a unique sound and style, and just exudes soul. He can almost make you cry with just one note.

Some of my absolute favorite guitarists:

Jeff Beck
John McLaughlin
Frank Zappa
Robert Fripp
Alex Lifeson

Not quite. David Gilmour is a brilliant guitarist, fine singer, and songwriter. He doesn't need Roger Waters.

I'll give you brilliant guitarist and fine singer.

But songwriter...I have to respectfully disagree.

Roger wrote all the best Floyd tunes.

...not counting the early Syd Barrett years.

Jimmy Page
David Gilmour
Tony Iommi
Alex Lifeson
Jimi Hendrix
Hon mention: Slash, Angus young, George Harrison, Kerry king/Jeff Hanneman, Dave mustaine, Randy rhoads and the extremely underrated Ritchie blackmore

Both of you make excellent points! Each man did some great stuff on their own but together they made musical history (along with Wright and Mason, of course). I am not ignoring Syd here because he was the catalyst. But, my opinion is that if he would have stayed the leader, they would have never achieved the great musical heights that they did later on. His claim to fame was that he burnt out after one album (with the Floyd) and that left people wanting more. The Floyd stumbled after his departure but soon wrote some songs that would be considered true classics. Atom Heart Mother and Echoes were written by the band (not Roger by himself bringing in the song for the band to play on). Though Roger did end up becoming the predominant songwriter, it was Gilmour, Mason and Wright that really fleshed out his songs. I think that The Division Bell is still (mostly) a great Floyd album with some classic Floyd songs. Though, Momentary and Bell sounded like the Floyd, it just was not the same without Roger. He brought that darker angst that the rest of the guys did not have. David`s achilles heel was his lyrics. And, though there have been some decent lyrics on A Momentary Lapse of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River, they really do not equal what Roger could write. My least favorite Floyd album is The Final Cut (except for a couple of tracks). Loved Amused to Death but did not care that much for Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking. I have liked most of Gilmour`s solo albums but have never heard much of what Rick Wright put out. And, I am a fan of The Endless River. There is some great music on that album.

Also, to tie in with the theme of the thread, I would say that one of my favorite concert memories was when I drove to Los Angeles many years ago and watched Gilmour with Rick Wright. It was really an amazing experience and show! Since it was Hollywood...Crosby and Nash showed up. Met Dennis Hopper. It was surreal having half of PF on the same stage together playing some PF songs. What sucked is I missed out on seeing Roger`s live show a couple of years after that. I think that Mason was playing drums for him on that tour. It really frustrates me when I think about it now. I would like to see them perform at some point but not sure if I ever will get the chance now.

As far as favorite guitarists go, that list has changed over the years as now it is almost impossible to say. But here is a list of my favorite favorites over the years:

Ace Frehley - (until I discovered Eddie Van Halen)
Eddie Van Halen
Randy Rhoads
Yngwie Malmsteen - (for a couple of albums. got tired of his style real quick)

Joe Satriani - (was really into not just his playing but his songs for years)
Jimi Hendrix - (I still like to listen to his music and glad to know that death has not stopped him from putting out some great material every few years)
Jeff Beck
David Gilmour - (has been my favorite guitarist for a long time now)

I have seen all of these guys live except RR and Jimi due to their passing.

Pink Floyd is the perfect example how the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

Gilmour and Waters are brilliant musicians and their solo output is great but their work with the Floyd, especially with Wright on the mix, make them music gods

Yeah sure...songs like Shine on, Wish you were here, comfortably numb, Dogs, sorrow, Learning to fly, Run like hell, Time, Coming back to life, High hopes and In any tongue are all horrible horrible tunes that should never have seen the light of day...? Riiiiiight

Did you ever bother to look up who wrote what in Pink Floyd?

See my post above.

Have you ever read anything about the group and how they did work together? How they created their legendary albums? Can you tell the music from it`s concepts and Water`s input?

Just because you make something different, doesn`t make you a genius. Barret IS WAY overrated. Yes he wrote crazy kid like LSD trip bell songs that no other band at that time created, but to me that is a Pink Floyd era that should be seen as an experimental closed down period of the band.

Sorry to bump this thread after so long. I just can`t read such nonsense and not respond.

If you ever get the chance to see David Gilmour in Concert, grab it with both hands and enjoy the ride. My wife and l recently saw him live at Arenes de Nimes in France and it was soul stirring. The way he plays the guitar is something that you will never forget!

Default Classic Performance, great Venue, Great, videography&sound

This BR has often risen to the top of my Music BR collection play list. It not only demonstrates David Gilmore at his peak, but guest appearances, of David Bowie, David Crosby, Graham Nash, and of course one of the last performances of Richard Wright. Live performances are hard to capture, and the Royal Albert is as fine a venue for ambiance and sound shaping. Add this BR to your Collection, you will not be sorry.
