I doubt Scream Factory used a different source and Arrow's know for top tier encoding. I doubt Shout/Scream improved their track record of weak compression over night. I'd love for Shout to surprise would.

I'm not really optimistic, I just hadn't been region free long enough to import it so now I might as well wait to make sure Arrow has the best version, 'cause you never know. Will I probably opt for the Arrow in the end? Yeah.

Makes sense. I'm fairly new to importing myself, but I knew I just had to go Region Free after getting sick (year after year) of seeing my favorites being topped overseas. Arrow has topped Shout (PQ wise) on everything but their earliest efforts (aka Day of the Dead) and even that's up for debate by some. That's before Arrow snapped out of things and took quality control very seriously.

Plus there are many great movies not offered in the US as I'm sure you know by now.

I pretty much went region-free just for Arrow Video, and I agree with everything you said. Even just the booklets make me super happy and add a lot of value for me. Having something like Big Trouble in Little China with the original poster art, a thick booklet and new interviews? Very much worth a $10 import for me, despite having the cheapie Fox release already.

I went region-free (well now only region A) just for Criterion. The grass is always greener

Yup, as with everything in life lol. You always want what you can't have, but I've been very happy with nearly all my imports. Of course I research everything before committing. Another nice this that I never hear anyone speak of is how it's much cheaper it is to import vs buying OOP domestic releases.

I've seen my share of UK/German etc topping Criterion PQ wise. Sometimes it's the transfers, and most of the time it comes down to encodes. Criterion's been slipping lately (more misses than hits) when it comes to great video compression. However, most of the time Criterion tops them in features. It's nice to have the ultimate freedom to choose what's best for the collector! For me it's video/audio quality, than I factor in features, price and artwork. Many times it's cheaper to import vs buying Criterion... and yes, even when comparing Criterion sale prices.

I also agree with everything you just said ^ Arrow was my main reason for going region free as well. It's amazing what they pack into their product for the asking price. Especially when they're on sale! Even with our weaker dollar and shipping... holly smokes we get a lot of value for the money.

The People Under the Stairs isn't a strong Arrow release thanks to Universal providing weak material to work from... I can't complain too much considering I spent $8.31 USD shipped from the UK!

They did away with the blue banner that graced the top of the cover. So much for uniformity.

The review is up here. What I gather is this is pretty much the same master that Universal used with two new audio tracks and SF's usually abundant and well made extras. Probably worth the double dip for extras nuts like myself.

From the review it looks like a pretty good release. I already have the Arrow UK version though so I don't think I will be double dipping. Although the Craven commentary is quite tempting.

Annoying for sure, they never should have had them to begin with so ugly.

So from the review from this site it sounds like the first release is the one to get. They both look near identical Except this version has a few problems typical with SF releases.

I already have the first Blu-ray release, and I had no intentions on buying the Shout Factory release anyway. It doesn't make sense to me to rebuy the same Blu-ray movies over and over again. The consumers are taking the bait, and falling right into their trap. This is exactly what the studios want them to do, by releasing multiple editions of the same blu-ray movies and make more money. I've been hip to the game a long time ago!

The Universal US release only has a 2.0 track as well. It's likely Scream created the 5.1 track from the 2.0 source.

Looking at the caps in link they look similar to me with only a small difference in some.
