I'll give you the new movie but the rest of it? Pfffft. There have always been plenty of books, comics, soundtracks and other such stuff over the last few years, and even the Vault is pretty damned fluffy at times. Hell, if they'd just given the movies the same sort of treatment with new encodes of the DNR-less masters (which we know exist) along with the newer mini-docs then I'd have lapped up that 50th set like buttermilk. As it is, I'm vastly underwhelmed by Paramount's celebration of such a momentous anniversary in pop culture.

It did not look like an upscale to me but I could be wrong. The effects were definitely better than in the original version. Hopefully they will show it again sometime.

Dream come true, but this was the anniversary and they made no effort to have it ready for Blu-ray.
Is it sad that I can live with an upscale? The DVD has pulldown cadence changes all over the place from being edited on video, which have played heck with a couple of my Blu-ray players. I welcome a consistent 24p.

Yep, the film/video cadence changes annoy me too.

It's depressing seeing the transfers before they were DNR'ed in the extras. They look pretty damn good for older transfers.

Beyond had 50 shitty aliens, so that's something.

Dude you know I would have loved a remastered film set. I would have howled at the moon. I'm just saying other than that, what was there to want really? We got a movie, a new show, and a bunch of commercial shit. I don't know what else, other than movie remasters or the holy grail of DS9 in HD, people wanted or expected.

Doctor Who did a bunch of PR stuff that really amounted to nothing other than a TV movie. Woop-de-doo.

We still haven't had the new show though, and with Fuller jumping ship that doesn't augur well. I'll believe it when I see it.

To be honest it's more Paramount that I'm pissed off with than CBS. Sure, we got a new film from them which I greatly enjoyed...but would I rather have had that $185M budget for Beyond put towards brand new 4K restorations of ALL the existing movies? You bet your sweet, sweet behind I would!

At least CBS put out TAS and the Vault whereas all Paramount did on the catalogue side is a single remaster of a film and some new mini-docs on the other films in a very transparent effort to get people to buy the same ****ing discs again in an expensive boxset.

And that's kinda the point: many older transfers will look pretty darned respectable if given an attentive dirt removal pass and a roomy encode.

Although CBS (or Paramount) still needs to address the audio sync problems with TAS. I'm a bit surprised we haven't heard anything, even an official brush-off.

I haven't bothered testing it yet but either way I doubt many noticed because of how the animation is. Even those complaining said they had to check Netflix to be sure.
