I can see the case against luddites (people opposed to new technology.)

But at least recycle the stuff,.. don't "throw it out".

I bet the second hand shops will still accept working Ps2's.

Imagine all the people getting brand new ps2's for x-mass. They exist,.. I've seen the moms in the shops picking up the ps2s just the other day. (Helps that they can't find the Wii.)

I still play PS1 games on occasion. There's a multitude of RPG's. There's also games like Metal Gear Solid that I still enjoy. Also RPG's on the PS2 and various other games. Lets not forget the fact that I play FFXI too. Backwards compatibility is an absolute must for someone like me. You may like to throw away everything you have when a new generation comes out but some of us still like to revisit the classics.

Well,

I was inspired by the original poster to have a look through my electronical junk and see what I could live without. I must say it backfired as I just finished watching a laserdisc.

Apparently the PS2 sold just under a half million last month. So if anything, Sell your PS2 on Ebay already!!!

That stat still blows my mind...

Should be a nice sales spike when the new slimline with integrated PSU model is released in SCEA and SCEE regions early next year, too.

I have a 30+ title PS2 library and 25+ PS1 library. Sure I dont play them that often, BUT all my top 10 favorite games are PS1 and PS2. My top 3 are all PS1.

And as playing Xenogears on my PS2 taught me, Backwards-comp isnt 100%. So I still keep my PS2 and PS1 on hand, ready just in case my PS3 wont play an old game properly.

That is why I was extremely happy when they updated the PS3 so you could put saves BACK onto memory cards: I never have to worry about getting 10-20hours into a PS1/PS2 only to reach a point that freezes on the PS3. If that happens, I just take the save file I have and continue playing on my PS1/PS2.

Actually, unless you have crappy vision, Trivial Pursuit has perfect rendering; reality doesn't require anti-aliasing...

Fwah??? I wasn't the one saying you should all throw out your older systems; I don't really care. I'm just sick of the Wii inspired mantra that good graphics don't make good gameplay. Of course it's true, but so what? Bad graphics CAN make for bad (or at least less engaging) gameplay for me and many others (YMMV).

I could still play the original Zelda if my NES system still existed, I enjoyed it that much. But I have a limited amount of time and space for gaming, so I long ago abandoned my NES. So it's not like I'm unaware that there have been great games that weren't on the PS3. I'm just saying that poor graphics does not automatically mean a game is better either. Most Wii games are atrociously dull IMO, and the ones that have any lasting power are those best played with friends during a party. Poor graphics didn't make them "better", and in fact make the games actively worse. For example, Wii golf is a lot of fun to play with a bunch of friends, but it'd be better if it looked like a PS3 game.

Im fine with old/crappy graphics for old games. What Im NOT ok with is crappy graphics for NEW games. Thats why I still love my PS1/PS2 but my Wii is a monstrous dissapointment. Especially when Wii games dont have the story/gameplay that my fav PS1/Ps2 games have.

I do need to get myself a 27-32" crt though, since PS1/PS2 are pretty brutal on a 60" hdtv.

The "graphics arent everything" line works (and ONLY works) with old systems. New systems cant/shouldnt be able to use that excuse. Thats why we pay a premium compared to older systems.

I keep all my games and have a few reasons to keep the systems as well. Some games look like shite on a 16:9 TV. I also have games that are NTSC/U and NTSC J and there is no way to play them on my PAL PS3.

Sounds like your mainstream gamer that likes Madden and what not. For the rest of us we have to wait eons for our arcade fixes.

God of War II and Final Fantasy XII mean I can't throw out my PS2, especially when they look like hell running on my HDTV (and therefore having the PS2 around connected to a standard def CRT is a good thing).

I keep all of my old game systems because eventually I plan to have a room in the house dedicated to games with all the past systems set up throughout the room.

I agree with this. I still hook up my Sega Genesis once in awhile and play out Streets of Rage 1 and 2.

I sometimes regret not having my original Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Atari Lynx, and Super Nintendo anymore...I'd love to relive Final Fight on the SNES just one more time...or to remember how gaming used to be...

I intend to keep my 20GB Playstation 3...even if Playstation 1000 comes out, because I know it will be a time warp back to November 2006-2007. I won't make the same mistake twice, this time.

I've been playing games since the beginning and in turn collect video games and video game systems and have been since I was a kid.

I have upwards of 40-50 different console systems from over the years...either in storage or hooked up.

I probably play my nintendo/famicom and atari 2600s more than I do any NextGen system....not to say that I dont spend my fair share of time on "Oblivion" or "Drake's Fortune"....but I think you're being a bit close minded about scrapping what in YOUR opinion is obsolete.

You can't preach to the converted. What I mean by that is we already own PS2's so why throw them out? I rearly ever buy a game for it but prefer to play my PS2 games on a PS2. Those who own PS2's and are concerned over Backwards compatibility confuse me, it's not like your PS2 breaks when you buy a PS3. It's not us that keeps PS2 relavent it's the people who are just buying one now for the first time, and honestly it was the same with the PS1 when the PS2 came out. 129.99 compaired to 399.99 or a library of say 1500+ titles most priced 40 and lower or a library of about 100 priced 60 and higher. To the average person the answer is clear, and it's better then them buying an Xbox Please fix me (I had to say it just once ). Once HDTV's get into affordable price ranges (lets face it 1000 is not affordable for every one) then the PS2 owners will shift over to PS3 which at that point Sony wins.

Don't you understand, dude? You're wrong for still enjoying PS2 games in the Glorious New Age of PS3! Morally, ethically...for all I know, anatomically wrong. Or, at the very least, you're horribly in denial. Didn't you get the memo? All those games now suck.

While you're playing your horribly outdated (some of them almost a year old!) games, ponder how you and your Luddite comrades are responsible for the continued popularity of the 360, the HD-DVD format, global poverty, endangered whales, and also probably the Spanish Flu.

But while the world burns down around you, by all means, enjoy your lively game of Pong.

One thing I don't get about the PSN store is why hasn't there been a complete conversion of the PS2 greatest hits titles made available and coded in a way that would allow all PS3 40gb and 80gb skus to enjoy.

This is huge market still. I can't imagine it would be that difficult to take some heavy hitters like God of War and sell it in downloadable form (compressed mind you) for the 40gb. I know with the current limitations of storage not many games could be downloaded at once, but it just seems like easy money for Sony.

Just a thought.
