I still like to go to the theater for the experience. Most of the time I don't have time to go due to other circumstances, but if I happen to miss the film in the theater I have comfort in the fact I can buy the BD later and have just as good of a time at home.
You gotta know that by the time you get the whole family out to the show you've spent $50 and you could easily throw that into the BD & have dinner to boot at your house as was previously mentioned.

Used to go out and watch movies at least once a week. Have not done that in years. We occasionally go out and hit a movie maybe every 8 months or so now if that. For now, I just buy blu's.

No fuss, no muss. I don't have to look at or deal with blithering idiots. I don't have to view teens in love sucking down each other's tongues or some adults that like to lick each others faces off in public. Sorry, but that's disgusting. Save it for home.

Food and drink is outrageously priced. Ticket costs are absurd and well - I hate people

So, I buy blu!

+1 I went to see I Am Legend this past weekend. The movie was about to start (it was during the previews) and lo and behold, three teenage kids come and sit down in the next row. They started talking and didn't stop for the ENTIRE movie.

I've decided that I'm only going to see really big blockbusters at the movie theater from now on (i.e. spider-man 3, transformers). It's just not worth going anymore with all the annoyances you have to deal with. I would rather pay for a Blu-ray, and be able to watch it whenever I want. This way, I could skip the previews and the annoying people.

I have found the best way to avoid that is going to the first showing of the day usually 10:30-12:00AM. Usually a smaller crowd than at night and if it has stadium seating most people go there first. I usually sit in the 3-5 row floor level. The soundtrack is loud enough there to drown out all but the most annoying people.

I know I will probably get flamed for this but if anybody thinks that HDM (Blue or DuD) looks better than 35mm film, they need glasses. If the presentation sucks at the movie you are watching, you need to speak to the manager ASAP because their projectionist needs to be fired. A properly run projection booth WILL always have better quality in picture than the current HD standards. 35mm film's "pixels" run into the millions across and down as opposed to digital's 1920x1080. Don't even get me started in the quality of 70mm or IMAX over HDM. I have over 20 years in the biz and I can understand some of the reasons that people have home theatres. Hell, I even have a pretty slick setup at home myself because I hate watching movies with patrons. However I still prefer watching it on one of my screens at the theatre. It is even better since I have the keys to the joint and watch the movie after everyone is gone.

I pride myself in running a top notch location. My projectionists take pride in their job and my floor staff have no problem ejecting unruly patrons. If you are ever in my area, I will be glad to show you how it is done. (I know...I am boastful) I know there are a few other theatre monkey's on this site like me that feel the way I do and can probably confirm they feel the same way.

I don't have a home theater system yet, hopefully someday. But nothing beats the experience of catching a great movie on its releasing night and talking and telling everyone about, "What a great movie I watched last night" next day, especially those than I've been anticipating or it is a movie from my favorite directors. But these whole studio exclusive thing kinda disheartened me from big anticipation. If I'm really hyped about a new release but it is by one those DUD supporting studio, I'm kinda bummed out because I know I won't be able to get it on BLU later, hoping this changes by end of 2008.

tofur69, I just wanted to clarify myself, because you kinda took my joke and seemingly misunderstood me, and quoted me out of context...

I was talking with with another member, about going to a 'live theater', with real life flesh and blood actors performing in person, on a stage....

And I jokingly asked, "Is live theater as sharp as 1080p?"... It was just a joke, and it had absolutely nothing to do with movie theater projections...

I still go to the cinema once in a while. I used to go every week to catch whatever was released but now I only go to see the blockbusters.

Like many of you I much prefer my home theater than going out to the cinema. There's nothing like the pause button when you have to use the facilities.

I feel lately that the cinema can't compete with my home theater (PQ/AQ wise). And I'd rather save the $30 it costs to go to the cinema (2 tickets plus popcorn) and buy a Blu-ray movie.

But, it's nice to get out once in a while too....

Hey no problem. My bad. I did not mean to come off so nasty. I love my job and take entertaining very seriously. I have very strong passion for movies. I gave up programming to do this. So whenever I think I see a slight towards the industry, I tend to have a knee-jerk reaction because I sometimes take it personally.

tofur69, great to see people that still pride themselves on striving for the best presentation of film . When done correctly a 35mm Scope shot film can look like a window. Now to get technical Have you run SMPTE RP-40 on your screens and what did you get? I'm curious
