it really wont be hard to do though. the book is loosely linked to the shining...same world in essence but completely a stand alone movie/book

Bruce Greenwood Boards ‘The Shining’ Sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’
by Anthony D'Alessandro - September 19, 2018 4:04pm

EXCLUSIVE: Bruce Greenwood is joining Warner Bros.’ Stephen King The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep in the role of Dr. John.

The description of Greenwood’s character is being kept under wraps.

Deadline exclusively broke the news about Doctor Sleep as well as its castings which Mike Flanagan wrote and is directing. Ewan McGregor stars as the grown up Danny Torrance, and the film also has Carl Lumbly, Alex Essoe and Zahn McClarnon in key roles. Rebecca Ferguson plays Rose The Hat, the head of a cult that feeds on the “steam” created by young people who have a touch of the “shining” and her main target is Abra Stone. Back in August, we reported that young Broadway actress Kyliegh Curran landed the role of Abra Stone, a girl who has the gift of ‘The Shining’.

Flanagan rewrote Akiva Goldsman’s adaptation of Stephen King’s 2013 novel that picks up the life of the Redrum kid when he is in his 40s and struggling with the same demons of anger and alcoholism that plagued his father. Trevor Macy and Jon Berg are producing.

Greenwood is repped by Gersh and Binder & Associates. The Canadian-born actor has an acting resume that spans 40-plus years with roles in Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness as Pike, the upcoming Sorry for Your Loss, Steven Spieberg’s The Post, and TV series Mad Men, John From Cincinnati, and The Resident.

I hope not.

The book references the original enough that you know Danny Torrance is the same character, but the link to The Shining isn't that important to the plot. You could make Dr. Sleep without even mentioning The Shining, which is what they should do, IMO.

The Kubrick film was 40 years ago. Playing this up as a sequel to that movie might turn off some viewers who didn't grow up with it. Sequels made decades after the original rarely seem to work. Blade Runner 2049 might have been great, but it bombed commercially.

I read Doctor Sleep and they have to refrence The Shining otherwise you will no idea why Danny is the way he is.

Stephen King has been on a roll. His last few books have all been great.

There was a time when I was losing interest in his stories but he has come back with a vengence. Doctor Sleep is one of his best but all of these recent books are winners.

Duma Key was a bore but then the explosion: Under The Dome, 11.22.63, Joyland, Doctor Sleep, Mr. Mercedes Trilogy, Revival, Sleeping Beauties [this one is a bit of a snoozer until it gets to the end but way better than Duma Key] and The Outsider [which half way thru the book brings in a character from the Mercedes trilogy which was really great]

Looking forward to his new one Elevation and the Doctor Sleep film.

Under The Dome was hit and miss but Seasons 1 and 3 were the best. They totally blew the spirit of the novel.

11.22.63 was awful but only if you read the book. Everyone I know who did not read the book loved it.

Dark Tower was a bore.

although it was an earlier book It both the film and miniseries were excellent. It Book 2 still think Amy Adams should have been cast. She is the perfect Beverly Marsh as the young actress in the first film could be her daughter, same look and mannerisms.

I think the articles are misleading. It's not a Shining sequel. The book has some connection to the Shining, but really it is more its own thing than anything else. It's certainly not a sequel. Not proper anyway.

We got a really good start to The Dark Tower world with an incredible film. They could always continue with it if they wanted to. Not that they will.

No. GOD NO!!! This is not Bohemian Rhapsody. That would ruin the movie completely.

Warner Brothers is distributing this into theaters. Hulu has nothing to do with this.

this is a morbid curiosity, but really not something that I feel would expand or enrich the original adaptation.

Again, this is not a sequel to the Shining. Doctor Sleep is its own story. It has connections to the Shining, but it is still its own story. And a fascinating one at that. Truly one of Stephen King's best in recent years.

This. I think it does a huge disservice to this movie to call it a "sequel" to the Kubrick version. Casual fans going in expecting a traditional "sequel" will only be confused.

I have to ask;

Did we read the same books and watch the same movie?

Truth be told, the 00s would have been the time to adapt this into a movie/series, nowadays with PC Hollywood, no way in hell you'd have Detta Walker spewing her vile words. Actually have her played by a white woman, I'd love to see that -equal opportunities and all

As for Doctor Sleep, it was a nice footnote to The Shining but overall a disappointing read. I'll still check out the movie though, mabey they can turn it into something good like they did with Gerald's Game.

Doctor Sleep the novel is a sequel to The Shining novel.

King hated Kubrick's Shining, I thought it was good but missed the spirit of the book.

Directors who do a good job with King's books generally take dialogue verbatim from the books like

Stand By Me
Shawshank Redemption
IT - both the miniseries and the film

I loved these books and I love these films.

I never read the Green Mile but it is an excellent film, same with Hearts In Atlantis.

Always up for a new Flanagan film, especially one that will play in theaters guaranteeing an eventual Blu-Ray release.

As long as this has no connection whatsoever with Kubrick’s masterpiece I’m fine.

I agree 100%. I adore the Kubrick film but it is a lousy adaptation in a way. I want this film to be like the novel, a sequel to the original King novel and nothing else. Unfortunately, knowing Hollywood, they'll play up the Kubrick angle.

I'm not fussed either way. For me they can either reference Kubrick's movie or not. I'm looking forward to this regardless.

I liked The Shining book but not one of my favorites and I liked the movie.

Doctor Sleep, I loved the book, a lot more than The Shining which I'm glad I read many years ago.
