The news came some months ago, but I've seen no topic on the subject.

Doctor Sleep: The Shining sequel from Stephen King set for movie adaptation

The film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining quickly became a cinematic classic, with Jack Nicolson’s Jack Torrance being heralded as one of the greatest villains of all time.

Even with the high praise, King resisted writing a sequel for many years, only folding in 2013 when he published Doctor Sleep. The novel focusses on an adult Danny Torrance who has been traumatised by the events at Overlook Hotel.

The book went on to become and international bestseller, winning the Bram Stoker award for Best Novel.

Luckily for fans of the Stanley Kubrick directed original, the sequel is now being adapted into a film, with Oscar-winner Akiva Guildsman, of A Beautiful Mind fame, set to write the screenplay.

A director has yet to be confirmed but King will act as an executive producer.

There are a number of King novel’s currently being adapted for the big screen, including John Cusack and Samuel L Jackson’s Cell, the Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey starring The Dark Tower, and another adaptation of It.

Screenwriter Guildsman is also writing the adaptation of The Dark Tower and has previously worked on the likes of Batman & Robin, Cinderella Man and The Da Vinci Code. He will also reportedly be serving as writer on Transformers 6,7 and 8 in the future, having been tasked by Paramount to create a cinematic universe.

I love the book. I feel sorry for the potential movie though--Kubrick's movie set the bar pretty damn high.

Yep, and I can understand why. But, I thought I read somewhere that King warmed up to the movie more over the years.

The film is a classic regardless, and it'll be a challenge for Dr. Sleep to meet expectations. I'm curious to see how it'll stack up with The Shining in the end.

Yeah, it's like 2001, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. I truly hope they includes some references to the Kubrick's version.

I know he warmed up to Cronenberg's Dead Zone but he still struggles with Kubrick's Shining. If you ask me those are 2 of the best King adaptations. Doctor Sleep I hope gets someone as good as either of those 2 directors, quite unlikely, or someone willing to do their movie and not play to the literal pundits of which there are always a boatload when it comes to all things King.

‘The Shining’ Sequel ‘Doctor Sleep’ Coming to the Big Screen With Horror Favorite Mike Flanagan Directing

Stephen King's 2013 novel picks up the story of Danny Torrance when he's in his 40s.

Redrum. Redrum. Redrum. Danny Torrance will officially be returning to the big screen in the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s “Doctor Sleep.” The 2013 novel serves as a sequel to “The Shining” as it picks up with Torrence in his 40s, just as he’s succumbing to the same demons that drove his father mad in The Overlook Hotel all those years ago. The film has tapped horror favorite Mike Flanagan to direct and re-write Akiva Goldsman’s original script.

“Doctor Sleep” picks up with a rage-filled and alcoholic Torrence whose “shining” powers return when he begins to embrace sobriety. Torrence starts using his gift to communicate with the dying at a local hospice center, and his story takes a turn after he meets a young girl who also has “shining” powers.

The sequel is being set up at Warner Bros., the same company who distributed Stanley Kubrick’s “The Shining” in 1975. Trevor Macy will produce the sequel along with Vertigo Entertainment’s Jon Berg. Goldsman is an executive producer on the project.

Flanagan most recently was the director behind Netflix’s Stephen King adaptation of “Gerald’s Game.” He has become a favorite among horror movie lovers thanks to critical favorites such as “Hush” and “Oculus.” He’s also working with Netflix on a 10-episode adaptation of “The Haunting of Hill House.”

No reason for this. We had the version that strayed from the book and was a masterpiece and we have the version that was true to book and was crap. Leave it be.

Would be cool if Flanagan takes the Blade Runner 2049 route and incorporates Kubrick's style into it to a degree.

This might be another Silence of the Lambs situation, where the story is a sequel but the film adaptation was very stand-alone.

Ten episodes? The book and the '63 are both fantastic but ten episodes sounds like a lot. Unless they're planning to take a Hannibal-esque 'inspired by' approach and that opens up all sorts of backstory possibilities, I guess.

Can't say I agree. We had a crappy mini-series that was close to King's IT, and I sure didn't complain that we got a great film that was also close to the book. The Shining is one of Kings best works. I'd love to see a proper adaptation, done by a competent director, with a decent budget, that actually adheres to the book.

Especially when Doctor Sleep is a pile of rubbish anyways.

I'm down with this because I really like the book, although it kinda falters towards the end. There's a certain plot twist that didn't sit well with me.

I absolutely love the Kubrick version. but never ever have I wanted or thought that there was more to the story.

this is a morbid curiosity, but really not something that I feel would expand or enrich the original adaptation.
