Does anyone know why this movie has always had such an oddball aspect ratio on home video? I'm pretty sure I remember it being regular scope in theaters, but laserdisc, DVD, and Blu-ray have all been presented in 2.1:1 (or thereabouts).

Was this specified by Vilmos Zsigmond or something?

No idea, but I can confirm the AmazonPrime stream (12.5 GB | 1080p/24 | DD+ 5.1) is in 2.20:1 (1920x872). It's still not 2.39:1, but certainly better than 1.78:1. Haven't watched it yet. Should be a nice improvement over the DVD anyway, especially when projected at 150" diagonal. And below is a Blu-ray version of the DVD cover I worked up for anyone interested. Enjoy!

Paramount doing Atmos on an older title? I don’t think so.

I also want Atmos for this stunning audiotrack, but it will be 5.1 if it ever sees the light.

You might be surprised soon. At least as far as Star Trek goes...

I hope so.
The MI series never got an upgrade either.
Not even Ghost Protocol which has 7.1 and would be a nice foundation for an Atmos track.

The again, Indiana Jones did, but that could be Spielberg’s doing.
