In terms of Film Noir. I watched The Woman in the Window for the first time and I loved it.

Would've been top tier if it wasn't for that ending.

Geez, not me! The first time I saw the film, I was really impressed - it was suspenseful and I had no idea where the story would go. Once the ending happened
[Show spoiler] and none it mattered since it was all a dream,
it ruined the whole film for me. Seeing it again, I enjoyed it more since I already knew what was coming, but still,
[Show spoiler]why end a really suspenseful thriller with a joke?

I get it. I hated it at first and then a second later it worked for me. I get it though. I usually
[Show spoiler]hate it was all a dream endings but it worked for this. I guess because it had a deconstruction feel. This ordinary man living out a film noir style adventure. He was an audience surrogate.

Yeah, I'm not a fan of films that
[Show spoiler]are dreams or any of those usual tricks. It worked in Brazil, but that was only about 10 minutes of film versus an entire movie. Thankfully it doesn't happen as often now, but still frustrating to think about

So many!! I would recommend the dedicated film noir thread for the more deeper cuts and people’s personal favourites (not to mention plenty of neo-noir gems too).

But the essentials would have to be (in no particular order)

Out of the Past
Double Indemnity
Touch of Evil
Kiss Me Deadly
The Killers (1946)
Rififi
Night and the City
Brute Force
Thieves Highway
The Maltese Falcon
The Big Sleep
Nightmare Alley
The Big Clock
Sweet Smell of Success
Sunset Boulevard
The Third Man
Odd Man Out
Criss Cross
In A Lonely Place
Notorious
The Killing
Scarlet Street
Ace in the Hole
Force of Evil
Body and Soul
Laura
The Letter
Pickup on South Street
Underworld USA
The Lady from Shanghai

Thanks for the list. I do have my work cut out for me, but thankfully I've seen a few of these already. Still, the majority I haven't. Ace in the Hole is one I've been meaning to check out for awhile. Probably get this one as well during the next sale.

I think you would love Anthony Mann. He was the Mann before Michael Mann, with the great cinematographer John Alton's highly stylized nocturnal lighting and eerie close-ups as well as the director's own characteristic gritty violence (which continued on in his westerns in the 50s).

Not all of his film noir are available on Blu-ray, unfortunately (damn it, WAC!), but at least ClassicFlix knew how to treat these three essentials:

They also released this economic version containing all three films on one disc, minus all the extras:

Also, I highly recommend Noir Fan YouTube channel which collects intros and outros of TCM Noir Alley shows presented by Eddie Muller, the founder and president of the Film Noir Foundation, who has inexhaustible knowledge and great showmanship in presenting classic film noir to the uninitiated and die-hard fans altogether.

and since this is still The Asphalt Jungle thread :
