So you won’t be able to watch an entire episode without dropping service?

HBO is not profitable because people are only tuning in for a few hours a month. They want hours a day. These services are losing out to Netflix. They have to find a way to compete. If they make shows 20 minutes, then give people enough it that they will watch for hours, they win and make money. With the current model they will continue to bleed money. AT&T knows all about bleeding money, and do not want another service losing money.

From a February Financial Times article:

https://www.ft.com/content/be71ceb8-...0-9c0ad2d7c5b5

HBO, the premium cable network, added the most US subscribers in its history last year, propelling revenue and profit growth at its parent, Time Warner.

The premium cable channel has struck new distribution deals that are driving expansion at a time when most television networks are losing viewers to competition from Netflix, Amazon and other offerings outside the traditional pay-TV bundle. HBO’s revenue rose 7 per cent to $6.3bn last year, helped by an 11 per cent lift in subscription revenue, the strongest in more than 20 years.

Time Warner’s total revenue in 2017 was up 7 per cent to $31.3bn on growth at HBO as well as a record year at the box office for its Warner Bros film studio thanks to Wonder Woman and Dunkirk.

Net income surged 33 per cent to $5.24bn, or $6.64 a share, boosted by a benefit of $1.07 a share from the recently passed US tax cuts.

Time Warner's 10-K splits out HBO revenue and profit into its own segment.

Time Warner’s Home Box Office segment consists of businesses managed by Home Box Office, Inc. (“Home Box Office”). During the year ended December 31, 2017, the Home Box Office segment recorded Revenues of $6.329 billion (20% of the Company’s total Revenues) and Operating Income of $2.152 billion.

Looks like this not enough for AT&T, which would be accurate if they want Netflix profits.

Today the company announced that it made $2.785 billion in revenue for the second quarter of 2017. And it turned a tidy profit, reporting $66 million in net income, up about 50 percent from the same period last year.

Profit is profit. We know what Hbo gets in revenue yet what are their costs. Why does the exec say they are not profitable enough?

AT&T is flexing their muscle now, splitting Warner among three streaming services.

Variety reports that the streaming service would offer three options to potential subscribers. The first is being called an "entry-level package," while the second is a "premium service with original programming and blockbuster movies." The third tier would give you access to everything from the first two tiers, as well as "an extensive library of WarnerMedia and licensed content."

Had to drag this thread up to post this.

AT&T is going to wring every dime out of Time Warner they can. Interested to see what their balance between released movies and stream will be over the next two years.

Elliott on Monday lauded the Time Warner assets, but also raised some questions about the strategic benefits AT&T can get from the $85 billion, or $109 billion including debt, takeover that it announced in 2016 and completed in 2018. "Time Warner is a spectacular company, representing a collection of some of the world’s premier media assets, and it remains a strong and valuable franchise today," it wrote in its letter. "However, despite nearly 600 days passing between signing and closing (and more than a year passing since), AT&T has yet to articulate a clear strategic rationale for why AT&T needs to own Time Warner. While it is too soon to tell whether AT&T can create value with Time Warner, we remain cautious on the benefits of this combination. We think that, after $109 billion and three years, we should be seeing some manifestations of the clear strategic benefits by now."

Nope. Aint signing up for Disney or AT&T or anything else that tries to fence off their content. I can live without it. TONS of stuff to watch. I have a healthy disc catalog, I have Netflix/Amazon prime and whatever is on network TV(OTA).

Whats hilarious is the cable-cutters(Im one of them but I "get it") who cant do math end up being subscribed to like 8 streaming services and are paying MORE monthly than they used to for cable or satelite. DUH?

I switched my cell phone service because of this and thanks to their B.S., I no longer have HBO/Cinemax on my DISH lineup because they jacked up the price for them to carry them and if they're expecting me to join their streaming service or get DirecTV (AT&T owned) in order to get those channels, they can kiss my backside.
