AT&T is in advanced talks to acquire Time Warner in a deal that could be announced shortly, perhaps even Monday morning, sources confirmed on Friday.

News of the possible deal sent Time Warner shares surging 8.2 percent Friday, briefly breaking a 15-year high. Trading had been temporarily halted earlier. AT&T shares fell more than 2.7 percent.

Weird. Charter Communications just aquired TWC here a couple of months ago and became Spectrum. I guess the fire sale is on. Everything must go!

As long as it doesn't negatively affect DC's current film slate, I don't really care.

Hopefully this doesn't happen. Monopolies are terrible.

they wouldn't be a monopoly, because, as far as I'm aware, they don't currently own any competing companies. These are all new lines of business for them.

The only Time Warner company that was a competitor was Time Warner Cable, which obviously isn't part of the deal because it was sold separately to Charter.

It doesn't so much produce a monopoly as a large entertainment holding company, which is what AT&T is trying to shape itself into.

It wouldn't reduce competition in the marketplace.

But what differences would there be, if any, in their approach to physical media?

how not?

If they buy Time Warner, which hasn't included TWC since 2008, they will be able to play HBO, Warner movies, and more, on DirecTV without paying any licensing fee.

Their ownership of DirecTV is exactly why this makes sense to them.

Still think Apple is a natural fit. They have talked about producing their own content and WB would be a game changer. Plus, they could decimate if not end UV all at once. The price is crazy high though.

You know, I hear this a lot and honestly I don't really get why people hate them so much. I just bought a Macbook Air a couple years ago and it's the best, most reliable laptop I've ever owned. It hasn't slowed down a single bit since I bought it. Every PC I ever owned started to slow way the hell down just a couple months after purchase before eventually crashing after very light use. My iPhone 5s is also my very first smartphone and it's also been extremely reliable these past couple of years. I really don't see myself buying a phone from another company.

Yeah their stuff is expensive, but it's reliable as hell.

Did you run file cleaners and regular updates on your PC?

I don't want Apple in the entertainment industry outside of what they're already doing.

Yes and yes. I used CCleaner and regularly updated my PCs. I also had Norton Anti-virus installed on each. Always had terrible luck with PCs. I'll never be going back to them.
