I don't understand what you define as hook? Are you implying something four times clearer than 4k quality or practically reality based visuals will not incline you to open mouthed dribbling. Because I can assure you 8k is gobsmackingly amazing even a certain informed gentlemen on this 4k section isn't quite letting you all know the bee-all & end-all of 4k development.

People can point and laugh about a link from 2014 all they want. It is those early adopters who are in my opinion been hoodwinked by the TV-establishment. I tried to suggest this when initially making this thread but people garner the new shinny stuff as the bees-knees in what to own. There is always a bigger picture & that image isn't 10years away as has been suggested a number of times already. The transition too 8k will be swift & truly dazzling.

Don't waste your time arguing with an obvious troll. He has no clue and that is obvious.

No one is denying 8k TVs will be a thing, and 8k content will exist for them. What we're talking about here is an 8k disc format for movies. When I say that is pointless it's because the vast, vast majority of movies are 35mm film or 2k digital masters. 4k masters are rare. 8k master potential is basically non-existent outside of 65mm classics. Even if a movie today is filmed on an 8k digital camera it will still be zoomed down to 2k or maybe 4k with 2k CGI. The resolution difference is already the least exciting thing about 4k UHD blu-ray.

So you need a hook. For UHD it is HDR and 10-bit color. For 8k disc it would be what? 12-bit color I guess, but that's not gonna light up the blogs. So what is your idea of what the hook would be? What would get me excited to watch a 2k DI on an 8k disc?

Oh, I can't wait for the cries of "I'm not buying this, it's just a 4K upscale!" to start ringing out in the 8K future.

Judging by what we have now, "8K upscale of a 4K upscale of 2K master!" sounds better

3 players with the same title paused, looking for greater detail at each step will also be up there!

UHD is a pretty hard sell for people at times, when I explained to people that a lot are 2K masters, so upscaled, straight away the response is what's the point. Colour and greater range overall seems a harder sell.

8K though am sure will come however and we'll all must likely dive in

If UHD didn't have HDR and 10-bit color then I think Ray and the rest would sound more rational. All I'm saying is 8k discs would need something more than resolution.

What's the point if half my cable channels are still SD and many big name channels are still 720i? Hell we can't even get 1080p broadcast yet. And really the only 4K content is Netflix and Amazon originals or youtube nature videos.

I think they need to streamline all of this

We are having enough issues with upconverted 2K films on 4K UHD bluray. Films with 8K masters are few and far between. This thread is stupid.

I can think of only two 8k masters: Baraka and Samsara. The 65mm was scanned at 8k. I have heard of some Imax films scanned at 8k and 11k but I don't know how many. Then Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is the first movie shot digitally at 8k. But we'll be lucky to get a 4k DI.

And it shows. When the trailer played before ROGUE ONE I was blown away by the PQ.

I don't care about classic movies. Never had an interest in them. Going forward I am sure new movies will be shot at a resolution that supports 8k dics.

Dang....I'm still waiting for half my favorite movies to be released on Blu Ray. If 8k does make it to market it should just be for the projector crowd. I have a 110" screen and JVC projector (1080p) from 5 years back that still kicks a$$. If 8k comes in at a reasonable price (yeah...right) I'll think about it....

Right, I wasn't arguing the point or anything, just making a sarky comment on how utterly overblown this "8K is coming!! Why are you buying 4K??" nonsense is. And, as you correctly point out, we've already got wider colour gamut and high dynamic range, so unless 8K comes with a special probe that you insert into your brain to beam it into your mind directly then it's only going to be a further refinement of what we have right now, not some ERMAZING revolution in picture quality. A bigger part of the newer 'Phases' of the UHD rollout is higher frame rate content (up to 120fps), but we know what most folks think about that.

Sure, I think there'll be a limited market for 8K just as there is for 4K now, but when it comes to the supply of native 8K content it will be SEVERELY hampered in that regard, even more so than UHD is for true 4K-finished content. And if there is ever to be 8K Super Mega Ultra HD Blu-ray, then I think those players will spin these creaky old 4K UHD discs just fine.

And I'll still be watching DS9 on DVD, upscaled like 20 times in size.
