Yes, like stripping out the politics of the story and cutting to as much of the action as possible. The basic story of Dune is quite straightforward; ditching the complications will probably be the studio's first priority...

I've seen the David Lynch Dune a few times. I've never read the book, but I could tell a lot had been left out. I tried watching the Tv series on Syfy but couldn't get into it.

Any big fans here? How does the book compare to Lynch's movie and the series? I can't believe Villeneuve got hold of another big sci-fi franchise after Blade Runner lost money. I hope he gets to do it justice.

I love science-fiction, but the book made me feel like a dullard. It's like Game of Thrones were I can't remember any of the character names, but even worse.

But it's one of the great works, but I worry that a film will be far less thematically interesting than the source material. You almost have to drop half a dozen of them to make it palatable.

If I'm thinking of correctly one of the factions leads to the banning of artificial intelligence and computing ... that's almost a picture in its own rights.

After two generations of violence, humanity took pause. Following this, their gods and rituals were looked upon in a different, perhaps even jaded, light. Both were largely seen to be guilty of using fear as a means of control.

Hesitantly, the leaders of religions whose followers had spilled the blood of billions began meeting to exchange views. It was a move encouraged by The Spacing Guild, which was beginning to build its monopoly over all interstellar travel, and by the Bene Gesserit who were organizing their ranks.

While I enjoy aspects of Lynch's film, it is a *very* loose adaptation and adds in elements that are not present in the novel. I only watched the Syfy minis once each. They're closer to the source material but the budgets just weren't there to do the story justice. While the Dune universe is huge and sprawling, I think the first book could easily be contained in two 150 minute films or a trilogy of two hour films without losing the spirit, politics, and philosophy of the story.

The Butlerian Jihad, while interesting, is really only hinted at in the first book. That's part of what makes the book so good in that there's a rich sense of history that immerses the reader in this fantastic universe while making this distant future seem palpable and lived in.

It's been forever since I've read them....but I remember getting to I think like the 2nd last book and giving up. I simply found them to exhausting to read. Brilliant, but ponderous tomes is what I recall.

I imagine the movie only touched on the highlights...

I would love to see this get the same kind of treatment Tolkien's works have gotten since 2000. I imagine the fanbase is there if they do it right.

Villeneuve Says ‘Dune’ Will Be At Least Two Films

Quote:
Villeneuve teased his grand plans at Rendez-Vous du Cinema Quebecois.

“Dune will probably take two years to make,” he told the crowd this week at Montreal’s Place des Arts’ Théâtre Maisonneuve. “The goal is to make two films, maybe more.”

Grand plans can be easily squashed by a hesitant studio. I'll be very surprised if his ambitions come to fruition after the BR2049 fiasco.

No part of me believes the first movie will be successful enough for a studio to greenlight a second one, but I would really love to be proven wrong

Yup, I'm surprised this seems to be going ahead. I'm not complaining, though. I love the book and I love the David Lynch adaptation, so I'd happily watch Daddy Villeneuve's interpretation of the source material.

He could always shoot a lot of material and release it as a two-parter. As much as I love Lynch's film, the 136 min running time did the narrative no favours. This is a story that needs to breathe.

If this were at a major studio like Sony or WB, I'd be inclined to agree. Since the rights are at Legendary, they could easily go the Valerian route, raising money for filming with foreign pre-sales. (And yes, I know Europa went bankrupt afterwards anyways.) I just hope they manage to fund & film both parts at once; would hate to see a "Part 1" that never gets a "Part 2".

It was a loose adaptation rather than a strictly faithful one. The book in very dense.

As a fan of the book series since i was 12, i hated both existing films being the Lynch monstrosity and the mini-series and Dennis whom impressed the hell out of me with Arrival and Blade Runner 2049 should know what he is doing with this 2 part adaptation for the big screen in a Lord of the Rings style fashion just like Jackson did with the LOTR trilogy of novels.

First draft is complete. Pre-production begins 'soon'.

Quote:
The director of Blade Runner 2049 has also revealed that a first version of the screenplay of Dune , the movie adaptation of Frank Herbert's famous novel, is now ready. The project should even enter its pre-production phase soon. In principle, two films will be drawn.

"Eric Roth wrote the first draft and I worked on my side afterwards, explained the filmmaker. I have not had such fun on the creative side since Incendies! My wish would have been to make both films at the same time but it will be too expensive. We will do them one at a time. "
