Warner Bros Dune (2021)

http://variety.com/2016/film/news/de...es-1201929280/

Quote:
Even though he has a film in Oscar contention and another in production, “Blade Runner: 2049” director Denis Villeneuve looks ready to jump into another classic fixture in the sci-fi world.

Sources tell Variety that Villeneuve is in early talks to direct Legendary’s “Dune” reboot for the company. Legendary has not commented on the news.

Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, Legendary closed a deal to the rights with the Frank Herbert estate for his iconic novel granting the production entity not only rights to film but also TV-based projects on the sci-fi property.

The projects would be produced by Thomas Tull, Mary Parent, and Cale Boyter, with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert serving as executive producers.

Set in the distant future, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, whose family accepts control of the desert planet Arrakis. As the only producer of a highly valuable resource, control of Arrakis is highly contested among the noble families. After Paul and his family are betrayed, the story explores themes of politics, religion, and man’s relationship to nature as Paul leads a rebellion to restore his family’s control of Arrakis.

The novel was also adapted as the 1984 film directed by David Lynch. The film starred Kyle MacLachlan and at the time was thought of as a flop, getting poor reviews and grossing just $30.9 million, but more recently has attained cult status.

As much as I love Lynch's Dune, I'd be down for another big-screen adaptation of the book.

I'll always be there for Villeneuve whenever he feels like doing sci-f. However, I never really thought Villeneuve would want to tackle blockbusters (assuming the studio wants Dune to be a big-budgeted tentpole).

I'd rather have them butcher the source material and get an original story at this point.

I've never read the book but this seems not only ripe for a do-over, it seems like a fertile setting for a cinematic universe.

A multi-film retelling of the main story tied together with other films and television products could obviously be a multi-zillion dollar disaster but if it works...

Not sure if they could do Dune justice with a movie, it probably needs some serious runtime to make it cohesive. A TV series might be better, but they won't have the budget to realize it properly ...

But two 180 minutes movies might be doable. But I'd love to see a Jodorowsky animated movie (or at least a decent book to ogle).

Lynch's Dune is atrocious. I've got no real interest in the original books but seeing these mammoth things adapted into film (successfully or unsuccessfully) is always fun, so I'm interested in seeing him give this a go.

Agreed. The tv adaption was better, IMHO. The books were wonderful, and with today's tech could be turned into a fine movie (or three).

I've said it before, I'm not a fan of remakes but this is one of the few material more than deserving another go at the big screen. Now with Villeneuve on board, I can only say bring it on.

[Show spoiler]From what I hear (take it with a grain of salt), only Barry Allen, Bruce Wayne, Diana Prince, Victor Stone, Kal-El of Krypton and Arthur Curry will be in Justice League. Guess they're introducing the 7th member of the League either at the end or in the second JLA film. However, since Steppenwolf looks to be the main villain of JLA 1, I'd say a decent amount of the film will probably take place off of Earth.
