...And at lunch time my Dark Tower 4K was delivered. So, I got it. The digital copy did not work, and the Sony Store said the digital code wouldn't work until October 17. Weird, that this got shipped out early, it even took Sony by surprise. but I'll take it!

Book adaptations to film are generally bashed pretty hard online. I haven't read the books myself so I was able to enjoy it without any bias. It's not the greatest film ever made and it's too short at only 1.5 hours. But some of the action and set pieces are very entertaining. Plus, I'm a big Idris Elba fan.

Just noticed the Best Buy exclusive 4K SteelBook is now available to pre-order for in-store pickup. Seems to be very limited quantities, as the closest store to me only had 1 copy available when I pre-ordered today. Don't forget to get the $1 off for selecting the regular shipping option when adding it to your basket and then switching to in-store pickup during the order process.

I watched this last night, and I liked it. Was it great, no? Did it suck? No. I gave it a 3/5. And, this is a movie that I will do multiple viewings with. It looked beautiful.
Now, I'm a huge King fan and Dark Tower fan. I've read The Dark Tower four times. And this movie is not the first book, nor is it the series. This is where I can see Dark Tower fans getting upset, as this movie is not the books. But, if you've read the books and you see that Roland has the Horn of Eld, then you know that this is another iteration of Roland. So, this movie makes perfect sense, and it follows the Dark Tower cannon perfectly. There was no way you could do the books in a two or three hour movie, just no way in heck it would of worked. It would of had to have been four three hour movies to make it work - similar in vein to The Lord of the Rings. So, they made a nice simple and tight 90 minute story of Roland and The Dark Tower. And it worked, in my opinion, but it's not what people probably wanted. Now, I do think an extra 30 minutes to flesh out Roland more, would have been nice, and that's where this movie fails, not enough background to the characters to get fully vested in. Hence, my 3/5 rating. But, the action scenes were great, kinda reminded me of a more old school style like Mad Max. It's not all cgi like a comic book movie (but there is still plenty of cgi). As a last note, I like everyone else when reading the books we all had Clint Eastwood in mind as the Gunslinger. And, all these people who are either racist, or complaining about the new social justice crap, with the casting a black actor as The Gunslinger, are just wrong. Idris Elba was perfectly cast. He was The Gunslinger, and he acted just like he would have in the books. Although, a little different because this is a different iteration, but it is in line with his character in the books. In the books Roland has many faults, but he's still a bad ass Gunslinger, and that is how he is portrayed in this movie. Matthew McConaughey also did a good job as well. But I thought Elba did a better job. |
