My only real hope for this movie is that Nolan either takes a cue from Dunkirk and cuts down the dialog in this movie, or he creates the story but brings in another writer to actually pen the screenplay. I mostly like his movies but I don't need more characters like Ellen Page in Inception explaining every little thing or Anne Hathaway stopping Interstellar dead in its tracks to explain why love transcends time and dimensions (or McConaughey's verbal diarrhea at the end). And I wouldn't mind if he went back to his more R-rated roots, but "event picture" means that's unlikely. I agree with those who want him to try something new like horror, but I'd be fine with him doing another sci-fi movie or even just a Dark Knight-esque crime thriller. He's a very good director, I just don't particularly care for him as a writer.

Agreed. Interstellar is his masterpiece: a soaring amalgamation of Nolan's usual epic expansiveness and a newfound emotiveness. I do think he might top it someday, though, because he has the talent for it.

I'm down for a supernatural horror thriller from Nolan.

Is there a thread to vote on our favorite film of his?

I'm with others, Interstellar is his masterpiece. It was epic, haunting, and ambitious. Like so many films we look at as classics in hindsight, I do believe Interstellar will gain a greater appreciation in the future.

Agreed. I enjoy that film more every time I watch it. I frequently show movies to my friends who have never seen them and Interstellar had one of the best reactions of anything I’ve shown, despite it’s length. One guy said it’s now one of his absolute favorite movies.

It’s very difficult for me to pick a favorite Nolan film. Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, and Inception are all perfection for me.

I think he's stretching himself a little thin with each film, and it shows particularly with something like Interstellar. Dunkirk was a frustrating film for me. It never clicked, and I doubt I'll ever watch it again. There's a danger he will totally succumb to style over substance with the next film. On a technical front, he's one of the best, but as a storyteller with something to impart I'm just not feeling it.

That's what I thought was done with TDKR.

I always thought Nolan (at the time of release) made it too ambitious of a project for him and in the end the movie simply collapsed inwards.

I'm kinda convinced that he never wanted to make Rises, but did so out of a sense of obligation to WB. That Nolan half-assing a movie can still produce something like Rises (which, as much as I dislike it, is still an overall OK movie in the grand scheme of things) says a lot about his skill as a director. But again, I just don't think much of him as a writer, and I hope he brings in someone else to help him write at least dialog.

TDKR smelled like a contractual obligation, and it showed at times. Yet, as the observation has been made, even a half-hearted attempt still managed to reap some nuggets of gold. I think he'd outgrown the comic book movie at the end of TDK. Interstellar can't quite escape the 2001 comparisons even though they are barely in the same ballpark if at all. I don't know what he was trying to do with Dunkirk.

First blu-ray I ever bought, though that's merely an accident of timing.

I think that's nonsense myself and the film could've done without it, but it's really such a small part of the whole thing that I just tend to overlook it. It's a minor quibble from my pov and I don't think it's enough to bring down the film in any significant way given the strength of the rest of the material. ( IMO )

Matthew's acting in the scene, where he talks to his kids for the first time, gets me every time.

Yay...another overrated film where he thinks he's smarter than the audience and ends up falling on his face.

I don’t think it was his first. Unpopular opinion but for about two-thirds of The Prestige, it’s his best movie. By the end, it’s his worst.

Does it? I dunno. I gave it a rewatch a few years back and still came away shaking my head.

It’s interesting because the book actually gives the

thing away in the opening chapter.

Based on the preceding events I think it made sense. If you're arguing that it wasn't to your liking, then I obviously can't say that's wrong. What would you have gone with?

I don’t remember the movie well enough to be specific. I’ll admit that if it really does make sense and I just missed it, then it might be his best movie. But I’ve seen it twice and was flummoxed/frustrated both times.
