The social media buzz is a little mixed, and it doesn't seem to be heading for any major awards...

They were garbage before Marvel, and as I pointed out in this thread previously, were responsible for the weakest part of 'Extraction'; Its script.

They should just be using their money and resources as producers. I'll give them that they're introducing the filmmaking world to new talents in terms of directors and producers... but these guys stink outside of the 'Marvel umbrella', where we all know the directors aren't leading the charge with those films.

I’m still so surprised they’re pushing this so hard for awards attention. I can’t imagine that this would really garner any strong, actual awards. I feel without Tom Holland they wouldn’t be pushing it so much. I barely even know what it’s about, but from when I first heard about it I already thought of it probably being a pretty generic, possibly fun action/thriller film.

Yeah this sounds like everything I expected. Sounded all a bit pulpy and gonzo, like I expect it’ll be fun, but I have no idea why Apple wanted to pitch this as an awards magnet.

Probably because, in a year when a lot of last year's big awards-season contenders were pushed to 2021 or beyond due to Covid, there's a gap where a pulpy action movie could have a shot. In a "real" year, a movie like Cherry could only hope to get nominated in tech categories like film editing, sound and the like.

I know he says he's 23 in the trailer, but Holland still seems too young. The female lead seems even younger. Looks OK otherwise.

Is it Holland playing Peter Parker too well?

Or is it he's good as Peter Parker because he's just playing himself - a goofy, genial nice white kid.

But very difficult to buy him as a broken, war veteran bank robber. Looks like he's about to break into a joke or something.

He also looks so baby faced.

It’s supposed to be in theaters on February 26. So just makes the end of Feb Oscar deadline.
