I think IM 1 and 2 will be Disnee's first real attempt at live action catalogue UHDs shot on film (Prestige was done entirely by Warners, it doesn't count) so I was always going to be wary of them simply because we've got no proper benchmark for how they'll handle film in 4K HDR.
And for all of Mike's kvetching above, he's gone on record to say that he likes the German IM3 disc - as do I - and that's been de-noised quite a bit as well, only it's been heavily sharpened to compensate and it helps to offset the softness. Because it's digitally shot it doesn't seem to destroy the image but the German discs for IM 1 and 2 look awful with the same kind of process applied - de-noise, sharpen - so whatever Disnee do with the IMs I hope they approach each one on its merits. The HDR on IM1 was ridiculous as well, with the brightness blasting out at 11 but virtually no extra highlight detail being resolved and it looked so boosted and nasty. No way are we going to get that same POS only with a "better DNR pass". |

It was indeed, and I thought it looked quite nice. But Geoff was referring specifically to catalog titles. I think that deep down we all know what to expect from Disney when it comes to how they're going to handle their catalog UHD transfers. But until we get the discs in our hands, there's always hope!

Unless hell somehow magically decides to freeze over; Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Thor will be sourced from 2K DIs just as The Incredible Hulk was sourced from a 2K DI. The only live-action Disney UHDs that we know are coming that will be native 4K is anything that has “Star Wars” in its title (and that will only be for six of the eight films not on UHD currently). |

The Force Awakens and Rogue One were both 2K DCPs, so I would expect to see 2K sources used for their eventual UHD releases. |

That's right- thank you. 4K, with 2K VFX renders.
I guess The Force Awakens is the 2K outlier. Hopefully, that means more of a chance they'll go back and create a 4K master to bring it up to speed with everything else.* * this is me, not holding my breath, though ![]() |

You never know. Given that plenty of TFA would be upscales of 2K VFX anyway, it wouldn't cost a horrendous amount of money to transfer the untouched shots from film for the rest of it (which would then be reframed/split-screened/whatever as per the original edit using the project files and other metadata created at the time).

No idea. But if it was, and if it's coming out before the Iran Mans then that'll be a test of how they'll treat a recent-ish shot-on-film catalogue title, though it still being very new means that the master(s) will likely be in great shape which is why I mentioned "catalogue" in the first place: even those studios that routinely wrecked their catalogue Blu-rays with DNR (Par, Uni) provided stellar-looking 'new' movies on Blu, grain and all, because of that filmmaker oversight. Stuff that's revisited years after the fact, not so much.
Yes, hence the 'whatever'. The combining of multiple takes or changing the timing of an actor's entrance etc etc etc would all be recorded in the data from the edit suite, so once they've assembled all the relevant parts they can put them back together fairly easily. |

Ahhh, the good old time when MCU films were shot on film..... Watching bits of IM1 and 2 on the extras is a reminder of how much was lost when they switched. The Last Jedi is actually a digital/film mix, mostly film.

It truly was something lost. Now the DCEU films are switching to digital when they were going to be all about film, per Snyder’s wishes. Other than WW84, that is.
