And I think from what I've heard. Either preview audiences were put off by the explicit violence in Prophecy and or Paramount insisted on a PG instead of an R, which is why it was cut down.

imdb.com has this bit of info.

I wonder if Scream could get those deleted scenes and release them in a second cut? I'd love to see an unrated version of Prophecy.

If they still exist? They may have been junked years ago.

I'm hoping they still exist and were edited out just before release. I don't know if studios keep those edits or trash them as you said. Seems like a huge waste. If they filmed and paid for them they should keep them at the very least.

It's a FORTY-YEAR-OLD movie...how long is a studio supposed to keep unused footage? No one knew in 1979 that there'd be a big home-theater horror market aching for every scrap of discarded gore footage. It's a shame if that footage is lost or in shoddy condition if it still exists, but it's to be expected.

Regardless if any footage was lost or damaged, the movie wasn't all that great anyway. If the lost footage was found and reinserted into the movie, Prophecy still would've been a bad film.

It would be what....a small canister to store? Isn't this what they keep in those movie "vaults"? Sure 40 years is a long time but I'm sure we all have family films stored away in reel to reel, super and standard 8mm...and who knows what older medium. If they preserved them great...if they didn't that would be a shame.

Prophecy struck me as highly underrated when it came out, but watching it again after all these years despite striking all the right notes about Native Americans’ rights and polluting the environment, it feels like a worthy daytime TV movie and takes a helluva long time for it to remember it’s a monster movie. The last half hour when the now cardboard environmentally friendly/unfriendly stereotypes find themselves up against a huge mutant bear in the backwoods is fun, but John Frankenheimer sure takes the scenic route getting there (the 50-minute Super 8mm cutdown from Marketing Film solved that pacing problem somewhat by reducing it to the length of a TV show). But I still have a soft spot for it that I suspect is more due to nostalgia than the film itself.

[Show spoiler]

Still, you have to love the audacity of the original Paramount DVD's packaging, which boasts ‘special features not rated.’ Right, those would be the subtitles, then?

The cover of that looks like an action figure set. I like it.

I know people have stated it's on Prime, however, it should be noted that it is indeed in HD on prime. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what Scream uses for their release. Looks pretty good from what I can tell, but I wasn't watching it on my TV. Threw it on during my lunch break at work on my tablet.

Very nice! I'll have to check it out. Definitely is one of my horror pleasures from the late 70's.

Early details for John Frankenheimer's PROPHECY (1979), coming to Blu from Scream Factory this November.

Quote:
***PROPHECY Update***

1979’s gruesome nature-gone-awry cult classic is finally coming to Blu-ray! Planned release date is November 26th.

Robert Foxworth (Damien: Omen II) and Talia Shire (Rocky, The Godfather) star as a doctor and his wife who travel to Maine to research the impact of the lumber industry on the local environment. They begin to investigate a succession of mysterious and terrifying events: ecological freaks of nature and a series of bizarre and grisly human deaths. Something unimaginably horrible waits in the woods … something unwittingly created by man, that will become an uncontrollable, merciless machine of destruction. Veteran director John Frankenheimer (The Manchurian Candidate) and writer David Seltzer (The Omen) presents “a gritty, violent, and deadly film that [packs] a death punch with very vivid, nightmarish special effects …” (Bloody Disgusting).

Extras to be announced on a later date, but we can confirm today that we have a new interviews with Talia Shire, Robert Foxworth and David Seltzer! Pre-order now @ https://www.shoutfactory.com/product...roduct_id=7234

We are indeed fortunate. Nostalgia is too often a solitary experience. As fun as nostalgia is, when it's shared with others who were there it's so much better.

I saw this at a theatre when it came out and Prophecy is one film I’m definitely not feeling nostalgic about.

Watched this on Amazon Prime a few days ago (the HD print looks nice and crisp), and as amusingly tacky as it is, I doubt I'd want to lay out $25 for it.
