The most "Star Wars" film is the one where

If I recall correctly, this is (so far) the only Disney SW movie that George Lucas actually enjoyed.

Surely the story in ANH and the OT was complete and the implied need for this film about the stealing of the death star plans and the role played by the man who built it undermines the completeness of the OT story.

There was no need for this film in relation to ANH or the OT as a whole. That’s why they’re called spinoffs, honey.

Pretty much. Star Wars isn't just about the set dressing and the eye candy - the characters and the tone in this don't line up at all with the original films, if you ask me. It just feels like a modern action movie to me with characters that we never really get to know, and none of the soaring sense of emotion and adventure the original films brought.

It's not a terrible movie or anything, I just don't understand the love it gets at all. I've seen it twice and I can't even remember the protagonist's name, let alone many of the broad plot points.

There wasn't any real need for the PT in relation to the OT either (which is partly why you can insert a Rogue One in between).

That's why they're separate trilogies, sugar. Likewise for the OT > ST.

Honestly to me it feels like the only Disney SW film made by someone who actually likes SW.

I think it got the level of "fan service" about right as well, a few cool moments with Vader and one or two small references like the cantina aliens but mostly just re creating the setting of the originals to tell its own story rather than endless callbacks to them. Dramatically as well it felt more like ESB to me rather than the cartoonish tone that seems to have become the norm after the originals, definitely stands up to repeat viewing in that respect for me.

It is definitely pretty high up my list of wanted UHD releases given how good it looks already and what it was filmed on that should give a lot of extra resolution.

I think Abrams loves Star Wars and Force Awakens feels like a "we're back to real Star Wars boys!" movie after the prequels. People said it was basically a remake of A New Hope for a reason, it has the same vibe and imagery. I said at the time it was a basic movie and nothing special, but it definitely felt like Star Wars.

I'd also guess Johnson loved Star Wars, but the difference is he wanted to change it and modernize it. He says this himself in the commentary, Star Wars had to change and he was going to deconstruct everything about it. Either he did this poorly or many fans weren't ready for it, depending on who you ask, but that was the problem. He wasn't referential, he was purposely different. Personally I think he just did it too soon in the wrong place (main episodes).

Gareth Edwards also gets credit for making the Troopers (all of them) competent with their weapon handling.

It's the first film I've watched in the Star Wars world that seemed to genuinely try to bring a believability to its action sequences.

I'm still curious to know what happened BTS with this production, though. There's been a lot of one-sided implication that this film had to be rescued from Edwards, and he hasn't worked since this film's release. However, considering how well he handled the production of 'Godzilla', I have a hard time believing he was doing anything out of the ordinary on Rogue One. I think a safe assumption would be that he challenged the studio heads a little too hardly, and has probably been blacklisted by them.

Rian Johnson acted like Star Wars belonged to him to change. He tried to get rid of the Jedi and the Sith completely. Weird how people didn't take to that eh.

It's almost as if one guy doesn't get to change the storied rules of the universe.

I'm going to pick it up and enjoy it, considering it was the best Star Wars movie since Empire Strikes Back. In the meantime, I'll continue reading peoples' opinions on why they aren't buying it or how disappointing/overrated it is

I wonder if between episode 3 and 4 the emperor and Vader could not go outside because Jedi are constantly making it rain lighting on them.

The Sith were dead when Rian took over and he ends his movie with Luke proclaiming he won't be the last Jedi, so... yeah...

Of all the things to get hung up on, this is the one that amuses me most. They're one with the Force. We've seen what the Force can do.

"Yes, I'll accept that they can come back as spirits, but I draw - the goddamn - line at Force users using the Force!"

Did Luke catching the lightsaber and lifting the X-Wing piss you off just as much?

It's frustrating to be someone who has real issues with The Last Jedi but then sees everyone else make the silliest complaints against it. I'm always like "yeah I'm not sure the humor works in the context of..." and then someone is like "YEAH AND LUKE'S A HOBO! AND REY'S A MARY SUE!" Like... wait, what?

THIS MOVIE IS AN ATTACK ON MEN!!!!!!&*&#%#&!!!!!!

I think there were two reactions to the beginning of the film when Luke chucks the lightsaber over his shoulder-- one, like me, was slightly bewildered amusement, and the other was like my brother who was immediately appalled. I think depending on that initial reaction is how people ended up viewing the film and whether they absolutely loathed it or not.

I also liked the bit with Luke drinking the milk. Fight me

I thought it was fricking hilarious the first time I saw it... This dude has been hiding for years and the first thing he sees is a reminder of why he's hiding... I think it's a near perfect reaction
